An opportunity has arisen for a senior research technician to support the newly set up child health research/gut microbiome laboratory at the University of Dundee. This group will be exploring the role of the gut microbiome in various human diseases, particularly inflammatory bowel disease, whilst also exploring the utility of molecular microbiology techniques within core paediatric practice.

You will be expected to provide high quality technical assistance to Dr Richard Hansen and the other members of the research team. The postholder will be expected to take on a senior position within the research group, supporting the work of other colleagues. Core tasks will include sample collection and processing, bacterial culture from gut-derived samples, and molecular microbiology techniques/set-up for next-generation sequencing including liaison with sequencing partners.

You will support the principal investigator, clinical fellows and PhD students as part of a multidisciplinary team, performing laboratory research to a high standard, organising study data and supervising undergraduates. You will work collaboratively with team members to develop and validate protocols for sample collection and support curation of samples in long-term storage whilst supporting recruitment and sample collection to newly set-up clinical studies. You will be expected to work with the principal investigator to manage the laboratory research team to deliver research studies to a high standard in a timely manner.

Biomedical Engineering is committed to delivering the next generation of medical diagnostic and treatment technologies and protocols. Research in Biomedical Engineering is focussed through the Centre for Medical Engineering & Technology (CMET). CMET is a joint initiative between the Schools of Science & Engineering, and Medicine. It brings together anatomists, clinicians, engineers, physicists, and surgeons to develop world-leading research and knowledge exchange.

The Lecturer/Senior Lecturer will be a key appointment for the School, providing strategic input to the discipline. The role holder will be expected to assist with the development and delivery of our teaching programmes including the JEP. Moreover, they will be expected to further strengthen and expand collaboration between Biomedical Engineering and key clinical partners in NHS Tayside and in the School of Medicine.

Your priorities will include:

• Publish research outputs that meet the highest standards of excellence in terms of originality, significance and rigour, and present work at national and international conferences


• Attract and supervise doctoral students


• Instigate and nurture appropriate opportunities to participate in interdisciplinary research and knowledge exchange with other academic or industrial partners


• Carry out teaching and supervision at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level


• Identify and engage with opportunities to further integrate industrial experiences, applied learning, and interdisciplinary connections into curriculum design

Who we're looking for:

• A PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Physics or closely related subject


• An outstanding track record in research (including successful PhD supervision - Grade 9), impactful research outputs of internationally excellent quality, and external funding commensurate to with level of experience


• Evidence of the successful delivery and organisation of learning and teaching activities that provides students

with integrated, translational learning experiences

• Demonstrable ability to work collaboratively with others including clinicians
