About The Role

This is a prisoner facing job in an establishment.

Summary

The job holder will be responsible for co-ordinating literacy classes for prisoners by building effective, appropriate and supportive relationships through managing them in a proactive manner and promoting the decency agenda. Contributes to sentence planning and reducing reoffending. Applies safer custody practices and complies with national and local security standards. Responsible for high level of security, productivity, good order and hygiene within workshops areas.

This is a non-operational job with no line management or supervisory responsibilities. This role is non-rotational.

Responsibilities, Activities and Duties

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

Promote the literacy scheme to prisoners, staff and management.
Plan and co-ordinate prisoner mentors to support and teach reading to prisoners.
Participate in the selection process of suitable prisoner mentors for the learning literacy classes ensuring they have suitable qualities.
Provide training to mentors and arrange follow up sessions if required.
Liaise with mentors on a weekly basis to check progress on learners.
Provide support for mentors and learners where required, encouraging them in their learning.
Arrange one-to-one meetings with mentors if required to challenge inappropriate behaviour and discuss any problems or concerns.
Arranging and chair mentor meetings.
Assess learner’s needs and match them up with suitable mentors.
Provides support and advice on career opportunities for area of work.
Supervise and maintain discipline of prisoners receiving training, education or work experience. Responsible for performance, motivation, discipline, appraisal and development of prisoners.
Open and complete Assessment Care in Custody and Teamwork (ACCT) forms, Violence Reduction Incident Reports (VRIR) and Security Information Reports (SIRs) when required and contribute to Incentive Earned Privileges (IEP) reports.
Log attendance and approve prisoner hours worked and wages.
Carry out fabric checks of classroom and maintain security of lock, bolts and bars used in the classroom.
Contribute to prisoner reports including parole, sentence planning and Individual Learning Plan (ILP).
Complete regime monitoring information and update prisoner training records.
Order materials and estimate usage in order to meet work learning targets.

What you’ll be learning.
A Heavy Vehicle Service Technician will inspect, maintain, and repair large vehicles weighing 3.5 tonnes and over such as HGV's and buses.

Training delivery.

This is a Fixed Term role until 30 September 2025 , working full-time (35 hours per week)

The Department of Social Work is a reputed provider of pre and post qualifying social work education and research. Located within the School of Health and Social Care at Swansea University, the department is dedicated to the provision of high quality inclusive social work education and to working in partnership with students, citizens, Social Care Wales and our Local Authority partner organisations.

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who is an experienced fluent Welsh speaker, with a professional background in social work and training. The main role will involve teaching, assessing and supporting Welsh language students and help to strengthen the links between our various programmes of study and our key stakeholders via the Welsh language. The post-holder will work collaboratively with the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol and the University in adhering to the Welsh language strategy and help achieve the targets set for Welsh-medium provision and students electing to study through the medium of Welsh within this subject.
The post-holder will be a part of a wider community of academic staff at Swansea and throughout Wales who are working towards growing the Welsh language as a medium of teaching and research within the Department of Social Work

To make an effective contribution to the Education Welfare’s Service goal of
ensuring that children of statutory school age take full advantage of the educational
opportunities available to them and maximise their educational potential.
To provide early intervention and prevention support to children, young people and
their families where there is a concern relating to the level of school attendance,
supporting and advising when there are difficulties and/or barriers preventing access
to education.

To establish constructive relationships with parents/carers, providing a positive link
between home and school.
To encourage and support parental imvolvement in the school by exchanging
relevant information, facilitating support for to improve attendance, access to school
and strengething home to school and community links.
To support schools in the early identification and prevention of school absence,
responding to school attendance concerns, and advising on policies and good
practice as appropriate.
To undertake certain key statutory duties of the Education Welfare Service including
undertaking registration compliance checks; and monitoring and tracking open pupil
attendance cases, and keeping accurate records of support.
To work collaboratively with other agencies and services that support families where
there are complex difficulties impacting on school attendance. To attend CASP and
Core Group meetings where appropriate when working with families.
