KBR is seeking a Ground Station RF Engineer to join its talented team in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. KBR, is the prime Technical Services Support Contractor (TSSC) to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), providing support in the areas of science, engineering, and technical operations at the Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (http://eros.usgs.gov/) near Sioux Falls, SD (http://www.siouxfalls.org).
The Ground Station RF Engineer position provides technical leadership in the areas of hardware maintenance, engineering, and configuration of all ground station equipment serviced by the on-site Landsat Ground Station (LGS). The candidate will also support several system engineering duties in support of the Ground Network for the Landsat mission, therefore, experience in the development, I&T, and deployment of RF systems is necessary.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Satellite Communications/Systems or equivalent
- Minimum of 4-6 years of related technical and/or development engineering experience
- Experience with satellite ground systems is preferred
- Experience with Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications is preferred
Core Responsibilities:
- Provides technical support and system engineering functions for the various Landsat Ground Network (GN) hardware and software systems; includes Satcom RF antennas and equipment, automation systems, data capture and routing systems, etc.
- Lead antenna / hardware anomaly investigations
- Provide engineering support for ground station upgrades and procurements
- Works closely with the Development and Operations leads to evaluate current and new mission needs; makes recommendations that satisfy evolving requirements while maintaining the integrity of existing missions and business needs
- Works closely with USGS, NASA, and other mission-level partners to meet the needs of the overall mission
- Performs analysis of customer needs; defines system solutions to integrate and deliver capabilities for LGS and into the GN and ground system as part of the overall Landsat mission
- Provide leadership and guidance on engineering aspects of the development and integration of multiple systems through system analysis and design, system integration, and decision analysis and resolution
- Conduct systems engineering activities in accordance with the Landsat Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP); includes preparing operations concepts, developing and implementing requirements, defining and documenting interface definitions, conducting architecture and trade study analysis, developing integration plans, presenting milestone reviews to the customer, and executing formal testing
- Support development and testing of elements that interface with the GN to help maintain overall mission integrity
- Develops and presents briefings and system documentation to senior level management
- Assists the Development and Operations leads to manage budget, schedule, and scope for GN systems
- Submit, analyze, and manage configuration change requests in accordance with established Configuration Management (CM) processes
- Support technical activities with other applicable personnel internal and external to the Landsat Project
- Support USGS Landsat Project Management data calls and scenarios
- Rotating 24x7 on-call is required
Required Skills:
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Radio Frequency (RF) / Intermediate Frequency (IF) test equipment knowledge
- Ability to read and interpret schematics and wiring diagrams
- Requirement generation and mapping experience
- Integration and test experience
- General computer hardware and software proficiency
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications such as (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio)
- Ability to conduct studies related to ground station operations / development, create performance plans, installation guides, requirements, operations concepts
- Desired Skills:
- Understanding of RF Design principles
- Understanding of network topologies
- Experience with analog and digital fiber optics
- CAD software knowledge
- Satellite Took Kit (STK) knowledge
- Component level troubleshooting and replacement
- Verbal/Presentation Skills: Ability to conduct project reviews (preliminary and critical design, pre-ship, test readiness, and operational readiness), provide briefings upon request
- Written skills: Ability to develop and review technical documentation including requirements, trade studies, test plans, procedures, etc.
- US Citizenship is required due to ITAR requirements
Experience and/or Education in lieu of these qualifications will be reviewed for applicability to meet these requirements.
