Job Summary:

This individual provides a dual role, supporting both Engineering and production efforts in the Optical Coating Department. Activities include collaboration with a small team of Optical and Coating Engineers, developing reflective, anti-reflective, and filter coatings in spectrums ranging from visible to long-wave infrared (LWIR). The job is responsible for optimizing existing designs and processes, improving manufacturability, performance, and cost. The position will also be responsible for performing all functions related to the coating of optical components and will assist with troubleshooting and root cause analysis for coating related processes.

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities:

• Monitor and drive continuous improvement of manufacturing processes.

• Support troubleshooting of existing optical coating processes and equipment – including pumps, evaporation sources, ion sources, crystal monitors, sputtering cathodes, etc.

• Participate in all aspects of the coating of production components - preparing tooling, loading parts, preparing chambers, monitoring coating processes, recording run parameters, unloading parts, and performing spectral measurements of witness samples.

• Assist with determining root causes of coating failures and creating corrective actions to eliminate future failures.

• Collaborate with Coating Engineers to assist with the design and development of optical coatings for new products.

• Provide timely production support for coating design modifications as required.

• Optimize existing coating designs, decreasing sensitivity and improving manufacturing yields.

• Support/collaborate with Optical Design Engineers to define coating requirements for applications ranging from the visible to the LWIR spectrum.

• Simulate the effects of layer thickness variations in coating design models, adjusting designs as required to improve performance.

• Perform uniformity testing of coatings, adjusting chamber tooling factors as required to ensure uniform coatings across lot sizes.

• Lead/support troubleshooting of production equipment and metrology. 

• Support maintenance during repair and maintenance of equipment and metrology. 

• Support development of preventative maintenance  for production equipment.

Job Qualifications:         

• Minimum of a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Physics or Engineering strongly preferred.

• 3+ years of experience specific to optical coatings preferred.

• Proficiency in coating material characterization, including refractive index and mechanical properties preferred.

• Experience with Filmstar (or other coating design software package), AutoCAD, LabView, MS Office Suite of applications preferred.

• Understands and can read technical drawings, process specifications, and documentation.

• Strong attention to detail and quality.

• Self-motivated, ability to work in a team or independently.

• Ability to multi-task.

What You’ll Do

You'll work individually and in teams to support capital projects and implement solutions for our clients. Together, you will help our clients make critical changes to improve their performance and realize their most important goals.

• Design mechanical systems including water, chilled water, HVAC, wastewater, cooling towers/condensers, boiler/steam, hot water, compressed air, and plumbing for manufacturing, distribution, and industrial and commercial facilities
• Work with multidisciplinary project teams and interface with on-site project teams
• Complete calculations, develop specifications, and oversee mechanical design
• Handle equipment sizing, hydronic piping system design and selection of mechanical equipment in collaboration with vendors
• Inspect installations and perform site audits
• Seal engineering documents
• Make an impact day-to-day with your skills and expertise, strengthening that relationship with our clients and team

What You’ll Bring

• A minimum of eight years of experience executing mechanical design on multi-disciplinary projects
• The ability to complete mechanical system analysis, sizing, design, and report writing
• Experience in the mechanical design elements of manufacturing and distribution facilities for the food, beverage, dairy, or consumer products industries (preferred)
• Experience in the design of advanced technologies, life sciences, or facility/building mechanical systems including HVAC (air handling units, chemical and laminar fume hoods, unit heaters/coolers), water, chilled water/glycol, wastewater, cold/warm rooms, clean rooms, cooling towers/condensers, boiler/steam/condensate, hot water, hydronic, compressed gases, or waste/drain (preferred)
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word
• Revit experience (preferred)
• Experience in refrigeration system design (preferred)
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to successfully interact with our team members and clients
• A willingness to relocate to the local area (relocation assistance is for qualified applicants)

Is the first working level of the engineering technician series.  Incumbents perform routine engineering project tasks independently and receive closer supervision when assisting in more complex engineering project tasks.  This role has no direct reports.

Job Description

Provide technical support to maintain safety and improve and optimize manufacturing operations and processes within manufacturing facility. This position has responsibility for maintaining safe working practices while improving conversion costs in manufacturing, directly impacting competitiveness and profitability in the AFNA business.

WHAT YOU GET TO DO

• Maintains Safety as the number one priority in conducting daily responsibilities, responding to production crew needs, and developing and implementing process improvements for quality, waste and productivity improvement.
• Supports the World Class Operations Management implementation as an active participant on teams and/or pillars. 
• Investigates causes of ongoing process, quality, production efficiency and high waste problems.  Then develops solutions using problem solving techniques. 
• Trains machine operators on new equipment installations, modifications, and new operating procedures.
• Maintains standard operating conditions system which ensures consistent manufacturing equipment processing conditions.
• Works with plant BPI resources to ensure technical support resources are available to production at all times.
• Works with manufacturing supervisors, production crews, and maintenance to troubleshoot manufacturing problems and develop corrective actions to eliminate the return of those problems
• Participates in the evaluation of projects and waivers to aid in the effective scheduling and necessary product development coverage to minimize the risk of machine downtime and high waste due to developmental efforts in manufacturing.
• Works with plant project engineering to facilitate equipment modifications to increase machine productivity and reduce waste. 
• Initiates and documents procedures to safely increase machine productivity and reduce waste while maintaining product quality per customer expectations.
• Participates in the training of machine operators on new equipment installations, equipment modifications and new operating procedures.
• May provide supervision to engineering co-op students depending on experience and workload, including performance evaluations, training and directing activities
