Communication To display a high personal standard in respect of selfdiscipline and attitude to work, in view of both the complex nature of equipment on which he or she may be working and the requirement to liaise with other healthcare professionals, patients, carers, clients and external organisations. To communicate with medical device manufacturers and other external organisations technical information relating to medical devices and manufacturers. To liaise with equipment manufacturers, external organisations and patients/carers regarding equipment to be returned for service and/or repair, and to organise documentation and courier where necessary. To promote effective communication with stakeholders including professional staff, patients and carers. To provide support and advice relating to the use and maintenance of medical devices and the services offered by Medical Engineering. To provide help and advice to end users, parent and patients relating to the operational use of medical devices. Analytical skills The post holder is required to manage their own daily workload as issued by their immediate team leader. The post holder is required to prioritise their own workload appropriately. Types of decision made include prioritising current equipment pressures within the Trust, available time and cost effectiveness of the activities carried out. Planning and organising skills The post holder is responsible for planning their daily work load. The post holder is required to work in a logical manner employing engineer principles when repairing and maintaining medical devices. Physical skills There is a requirement to routinely carry out repairs on medical devices which requires precision dexterity and the use of hand tools. Other duties that require manipulation of equipment include keyboard and assembly of medical devices. Responsibility for patient/client care There is a requirement to routinely carry out repairs on medical devices which requires precision dexterity and the use of hand tools. Clinical Skills There is a requirement for the post holder to work and communicate with multi-disciplinary teams relating to medical devices involved in patient care. The post holder is required to have a basic understanding of the clinical application of the medical devices being maintained and to be able to advise clinical staff when a device is being used inappropriately or incorrectly. Responsibility for policy/service development The post holder will be required to implement Trust wide and department policies/procedures. The posts holder will be required to assist in reviewing department policies/procedures. Responsibility for financial and physical resources The post holder will routinely be required to handle valuable specialist medical devices on a daily basis. The post holder is required to perform stock control check and also ensure the stock is correctly managed and secured. There is no budget holder responsibility with the post. There is a requirement to carry out maintenance of medical devices. Responsibility for human resources To attend training courses and to update ones own technical knowledge of specialist equipment and to update ones knowledge in respect of the specialised clinical use of such equipment. To disseminate this information to the relevant healthcare specialists as required. To disseminate information relating medical devices and finance information to the relevant staff as required. To train and supervise medical engineering apprentices when required. To possess a level 3 engineering apprenticeship and BTEC Level 3 or equivalent experience in a relevant engineering related discipline. To assist in the training of Medical Engineering Apprentices. Responsibility for information resources Data storage of own maintenance records and activities. Stock control and inventory checks. Input maintenance records carried into the Trusts maintenance database. Utilise IT based test equipment whilst maintaining medical devices and calibration. Responsibility for research and development The post holder will be involved in processing medical devices involved in clinical research and trials. Management and Leadership The post holder will be required to work to department/Trust policies and procedures. The post holder has a degree of autonomy on a daily basis although will have a local source of supervision. The post holder will be required to manage their own workload. The post holder will be required to suggest improvements to the local service when necessary. Other Job Related Factors Physical Effort Required for the Job Manual handling of medical devices including incubators etc., daily lifting of delivery goods and transporting. Lifting weights up to 15 kg, pushing and pulling weights up to 190 kg. Short duration frequently on a daily basis. The post holder will be required to work for long periods in the day in a restricted position whilst carrying out data inputting and, Help Desk activities. The post holder will occasionally be required to utilise manual handling aides such as a hoist to lift device up to 400 kg. Mental Effort Required for Concentration and Multi-Tasking A high degree of concentration will be required for up to six hours per day The ability to multitask is essential as higher priority repairs need to be dealt with at short notice Emotional Effort Required for the Job The post holder will have frequent contact with patients/parents of which some will be distressed and will often have severe clinical conditions. The post holder will also be required to work in areas in the Trust such as Critical Care, Theatres, Pathology and will be exposed to the day to day activities within these areas of the Trust. Working Conditions There is a requirement to work on a daily basis with medical devices that are often contaminated and can contain bodily fluids. There is a requirement to work with COSHH substances on a daily basis. The post holder is required to perform maintenance activities on medical devices of which some will be live circuits protected by a RCD.
