The Environmental Engineering Manager at Thames Water is crucial in driving environmental initiatives and ensuring regulatory compliance. They lead a team responsible for key functions, including setting environmental expectations on capital projects, developing the carbon strategy, and providing environmental input in various projects and initiatives. Their work is instrumental in promoting sustainability, biodiversity, and nature-based solutions within the organisation. By staying updated on environmental legislation and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, they ensure that Thames Water meets its environmental responsibilities effectively.

This role is a secondment role for up to 6 months.

What you’ll be doing as an Environmental Engineering Manager

- Managing the Environmental Engineering team.
- Establishing a cohesive, sustainable engineering structure from graduates to industry experts that lead Thames Water’s engineering requirements into AMP8 and beyond.
- Developing and enabling our carbon strategy.
- Including Biodiversity and Heritage protection from the project definition.
- Providing environmental support to Asset management projects definition.
- Providing environmental input in PR 24.
- Raising awareness of environmental developments and engineering solutions.
- Keeping up to date with relevant changes in environmental legislation and initiatives.
- Working with consultants, contractors, and teams across Thames Water to identify risks and constraints and implement solutions at project definition stages.
- Setting environmental expectations on capital schemes, carbon, increasing biodiversity and promoting nature-based solutions.
- Define, develop, and maintain environmental engineering competencies across the business.
- Provide technical sign-off and assurance during technical delivery, including handover.
- Devising the best tools and systems to monitor performance and implement strategies.
- Assessing, analysing, and collating environmental performance data and reporting information to stakeholders.

Hybrid – Clearwater Court, you will be required in the office and on-site as the business requires you.

36 hours a week, Monday - Friday.

What you should bring to the role

- Be a highly experienced and recognised environmental engineering leader with several years working within the water industry.
- Understand the regulatory environment to achieve compliance with our engineering regulatory requirements.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills, both internally and externally.
- Be collaborative and can influence senior colleagues.
- Educated to degree level or equivalent, likely in an engineering discipline with a postgraduate qualification and preferably with a professional chartership.
- A passion for continuous professional development and an active approach to driving diversity within our engineering function at Thames Water.
- Good budget management experience.

Candidate Specification :


- IMechE accredited degree in Mechanical Engineering.

- Knowledge of the Designer or Principal Designer duties under CDM 2015.

Building Services Manager, Mechanical, laboratory project
c£400 a day - to Feb 2025 - Reading
Working for a M&E contractor specialising in providing construction, services and property management expertise in Building and Civil Engineering, Property Development, Private House Building, Financing, Healthcare and Critical environments.
You will be charged with the delivery of Mechanical services on a Laboratory project near Reading in Berkshire with a total M&E value of around £60M. You will be required to carry out the full coordination and management of Mechanical services installations of this project working as part of a team.
Ideally educated to a minimum HNC level in a relevant field with a good level of experience working for at least 5 years within the MEP contracting arena. Mechanical background is essential.

About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Engineer within our 132kV Overhead Line team within our distribution operations business.

You'll be a key member of the team helping with the safe delivery of a wide range of key inspections and maintenance activities as well as capital refurbishments.

We are looking for someone who has strong communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage varying deadlines and priorities, whilst maintaining positive working relationships. Someone who can identify and implement innovative and effective business improvements.

The key duties and responsibilities of the Engineer are:

- Lead and work as part of the team ensuring all health and safety requirements have been met before work commences on site and are followed at all times.

- Resolve all immediate technical and planning issues, ensuring all work is carried out to necessary standards, schedule and customer requirements.

- Plan work programmes and monitor work progress to ensure customer requirements are met and standards achieved.

- Liaise, co-operate and co-ordinate with other managers as required to ensure cost effective application of resources.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

- An understanding of 132kV Overhead Lines and the environment we operate.

- Knowledge of current operations and maintenance activities including policies, procedures, electrical systems and their geography would be beneficial but not essential as informative training will be provided.

- ONC in Electrical/Power Engineering or equivalent qualification or gained equivalent experience is preferred, but not essential as training can be provided

- Site management safety training scheme (SMSTS) or Institution of Occupational Health & Safety (IOSH) qualification.
