Chief Engineer - Rail Delivery
Chief Engineers at Telent take on a key leadership role for an engineering team on a specific project. This is a very senior role and so excellent communication, and leadership skills are vital. You will be expected to work alongside other managerial staff and external consultants, report into senior management, interface with clients and recruit, lead, support and guide your own team.
You will be responsible for creating practical solutions to engineering challenges and overseeing projects to implementation and mobilisation safely, within budget and agreed timeframe. Ensuring all technical standards and compliance activities required for the project complies with both company specifications and legal and regulatory requirements.
Leading a large, multi-disciplined Delivery function, this role is responsible for providing direction on key project deliverables with a strong focus on aligning activities with the Design and Programme Management/Build functions, driving continuous improvement, and the successful delivery of our products and services.
Key Deliverables:
The Chief Engineer will have a responsibility for engaging with the Engineering Director, Rail Director & Group Engineering Director, in developing delivery strategies incorporating the latest technologies, ensuring the necessary resources are allocated to a given programme and that programmes are delivered on time, compliantly and to the required technical standard and budget. The deliverables will be:
- Engineering management of development programmes and any sub-contract packages.
- Ensure Telent processes are followed for all delivery activities.
- Ensure compliance with Client type approval procedures for products and solutions.
- Ensure delivery, consider environmental and sustainability requirements to meet the Customers obligations.
- Establish & manage robust Verification and Validation processes.
- Establish & manage robust methods of change management for developing and released product versions.
- Support other disciplines and design teams in delivering innovative solutions and resolving project technical issues.
- Manage engineering resource to deliver against agreed project programmes.
- Interface to all other elements of the rail 2.0 organisation i.e. Business Development, Programme management, Enable & Services.
The responsibilities for this role include:
- Working closely with your peers in the full design process from concept through to execution, the Chief Engineer oversees the installation of equipment or processes and ensures all the necessary quality and safety checks, are in place.
- Assisting with the design concept development and solutions architecture for meeting new and existing customer solutions including developing bid responses and working collaboratively on continuous improvement of existing solutions and projects.
- Leads all engineering delivery activities for rail projects within Telent.
- To act as a single point of contact with client representatives on all matters relating to project engineering aspects.
- To implement digital systems, processes, and tools that support our design teams and take our stakeholders into account.
- Responsible for delivery & entry into service for all engineering solutions developed by the engineering design teams.
- Deliver engineering support to bids and other pre-sales activities.
- Accountable for ensuring that all delivery team members understand their legal safety obligations, follow Telent processes, comply with client approval procedures, and consider environmental and sustainability requirements.
- Manage the competence and performance of all engineering resources, identify and address areas for improvement, and develop the Delivery function to meet current and future business demands through recruitment and training.
- Drive innovation, efficiency, and cost reduction, through a culture of continuous improvement.
- Financial accountability for engineering delivery budget.
Skill Requirements:
- You will have experience in the successful delivery of products and services into a transport related market with an emphasis on Rail.
- You will have experience of technical leadership of a medium to large sized multi-disciplined function.
- You will be fully aware of the current legislation associated with products and services in the UK rail market and have experience of the systems required to enable their successful delivery.
- Must be able to act as a single point of contact with client representatives on all matters relating to project engineering delivery.
- Provide specialist knowledge in key areas of the project delivery lifecycle.
Qualifications:
- Depth and breadth of experience and demonstrable evidence of success on comparable projects
- Strong Leadership skills
- Chartered status
- Signatory responsibility (work sign-off)
- Stakeholder management skills
- Engineering degree from a recognised university in related engineering subject matter (Project/Software/Electrical/Design)
- Well-proven experience, most of it in a managerial role (preferably leading a team of 10 or more engineers).
- Master's degree in engineering.
- In-depth strategic understanding of the objectives of the organisation and interpreting these into deliverables for the team
- Excellent demonstrable project management experience
- Experience of managing and influencing work schedules
- Proven ability to plan and meet programme deliverables
- Proven ability to manage budgets and finical accountability for profit and loss for engineering
- Resource planning, mobilisation and delivery execution
- Excellent communication skills at all levels
- Demonstrable skills in database, and software applications, including Microsoft office suite (eg Visio, Excel, Oracle)
