University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.
Please see below for detailed job description of the role.
The Cardiology Team at UHS are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join an existing cohort of 12 SHO level doctors in order to deliver safe and effective care to cardiac patients within the Trust. The post is offered initially for 12 months and would suit a doctor aiming to complete an ‘FY3’ year or a more senior trainee looking for further experience in Cardiology to strengthen their CV.
This post provides a fantastic opportunity to experience both district hospital cardiology (serving the local Southampton population of 600,000) and tertiary centre cardiology (serving the Wessex Region of 3.5M). Successful candidates will be exposed to all aspects of cardiology and will have the opportunity to see many different clinical conditions. Junior doctors in the department rotate through all sub-speciality teams, including the regional ACHD service and the heart failure service, which has recently been awarded ‘Team of the Year’ by the patient charity Pumping Marvellous. It is, thus, an ideal post for those individuals wishing to take MRCP or those looking for further experience of cardiology prior to embarking on specialist training. Many previous applicants have found this a useful part of general practitioner training. The broad exposure to acute cardiology and also management of common conditions such as hypertension and angina have helped many others in their subsequent careers in primary care.
WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU
As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to. UHS is rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care.
We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.
Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 20% lower than London and 14 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
You will join a 13 doctor rota, involving both overnight and weekend working. Time will be split between acute admissions on the newly expanded 20 bed CCU and ward working to support the Consultant and SpR teams. The role also involves care for Level 2 patients on CHDU, with direct senior supervision, and offers the opportunity for experience in Non-invasive Ventilation, arterial lines, CVP lines and management of intra-aortic balloon pumps. Key working relationships will be with senior doctors in the Cardiology Department, Specialist Nursing Teams and Cardiology Advanced Nurse Practitioners. Additional responsibilities will include attending supervised outpatient clinics in all cardiac sub-specialities, delivering DCCV lists and contributing to the weekly teaching programme for junior doctors in the department. There will be an opportunity for interested candidates to receive some basic training in echocardiography and gain some exposure to catheter lab based procedures – diagnostic angiography, PCI and pacing.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
You will have full GMC registration with a licence to practice, and demonstrate enthusiasm for the post and a proven track record of delivering safe and efficient care to patients in a hospital setting. Completion of the Foundation programme or similar competencies will be demonstrated. Some experience of cardiology would be desirable but is not a prerequisite for appointment to the post and a full induction to the department and the role will be provided.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).
Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.
Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)
Basic Salary – MT03 £49,909
Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview
Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role. Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible. Applicants requiring Tier 2 sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application.
Interviews will be held on: TBC
