An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 3 Health Care Assistant / Administrator to join our small but dynamic team in Watford HIV services.
Healthcare Assistants are a vital part of the team that supports both the staff and patients. Working under the supervision of qualified nursing staff, healthcare assistants carry out a wide range of duties to care for, support, and provide information to patients and their families.
The healthcare assistant can undertake a range of roles within their overall job and their level of responsibility will be appropriate/ commensurate to the level of knowledge and skills they have acquired.
The attitude and behaviour of a senior healthcare assistant is essential. Suitable candidates for the role are friendly, caring and sensitive individuals, who are able to offer social stimulation as well as care to the patients they tend. They will also demonstrate the Trust values – Kindness, Respect, Safety and Excellence – in all aspects of their role.
To participate, under the direction of the medical and nursing team, in the delivery of patient care to a defined client group, in accordance with the philosophy of care which enables clients to maintain their skills and maximize the potential to achieve independence. Work as part of an effective and caring team.
The post holder works under the direct supervision of the doctors and nurses. They will work within the boundaries of their existing and developing skills at all times. The post holder is expected to maintain high standards of care, managing their time, tasks and resources effectively.

Clinical
· To work under the direction of the medical and nursing staff and to assist the doctors and nurses in tasks deemed appropriate.
· Perform phlebotomy when requested to do so by the medical staff, if trained and assessed as competent to perform this task and process samples according to local and Trust policy.
· Safeguard patients own belongings and space
· Take and record the patient’s observations (e.g. temperature, skin assessment) as required, and inform the registered nurse of any observed changes in the patient’s condition.
House Keeping and Environment
· Will ensure the environment is clean, comfortable, safe, and welcoming to patients, relatives and all health care professionals. In inpatient areas, this includes preparing bed space: - wash beds, chairs and lockers, making unoccupied beds in readiness for appropriate use.
· Clean and maintain equipment and make ready for use.
· To have an awareness of monitoring and maintaining stock levels of designated items.
· Keep all storage areas clean, tidy and in good order
Infection Control
· Be aware of and understand basic infection control techniques
· Be aware of and follow safe disposal of sharps into appropriate container
· Understand universal safety techniques with regard to spillages.
· Dispose of body fluids, soiled linen, clothing etc in line with the Trust Infection Control Policy and Waste Disposal Regulations
