Clinical Psychologist – 7 / 8a Development Post

Full-time, permanent

We are recruiting aClinical Psychologist to join the team working within inpatient services for people with Intellectual Disabilities at Brooklands Hospital.

The post is split across the Specialist Assessment and Treatment service for adults and the Adolescent Inpatient Service.

Psychologists within Intellectual Disability services are fully integrated within collaborative multi-disciplinary teams, whilst also working closely with other psychologists on service development projects, to deliver training and develop groups and other interventions. The contribution of psychological services is highly valued within the teams and service management, and the team are often involved in developing innovative solutions to service needs.

The post holder will have opportunity to use the whole range of their psychological skills and experience. This will include clinical input in the form of assessments, individual and group therapies, team formulation, reflective practice and supporting other staff to undertake psychological interventions. He/she will also be involved in providing training and supervision to others and contributing to and leading on service development projects and undertaking audit and research.



The SATS and CAMHS Psychological Services team are part of a wider Psychological Services team on the Brooklands site. The psychology department is a well-established and supportive service and successfulapplicants will receive support to further develop their skills and knowledge, through good quality supervision and training opportunities. The team have a range of clinical interests and expertise in a variety of different therapeutic models including CBT, DBT and Compassion Focussed approaches.



Positive Behavioural Support is a major part of our treatment philosophy. The service ethos is to ensure that effective, evidence based interventions are provided to people who present considerable risk to themselves or others, to ensure that they can return to a less restrictive environment in the community as soon as possible.

The service has strong links with local clinical psychology training courses and regularly provides placements for trainee clinical psychologists, supervision for research, and teaching on the local courses. There are also strong links with Community Learning Disability and Intensive Support teamsacross Coventry, Warwickshire and Solihull.







The post holder will have post qualification experience of working with adults and/or young people with Intellectual Disabilities in community or inpatient settings.

In these instances, the successful candidate would be appointed to a “Development Post” role at band 7 and provided opportunities and support to progress to the band 8a role upon successful completion of a preceptorship programme. It is expected that this process will be achievable within a period of up to two years, although timescales may vary between different staff members in Development Posts. In the event that elements of the expected competencies to progress to 8a are not fully met, the role will remain as a band 7.

This post involves implementing specialist OT assessments and interventions as well as contributing to the development and delivery of the Occupational Therapy service and Group programme within Bexley locality. The post involves clinical leadership and supervision of the ADAPT OT staff including one full time Band 6 OT and one part time OT assistant who works across two teams. The also post involves some generic care co-ordination work alongside having an OT caseload.

You will be expected to apply knowledge of specialist occupational therapy models, Occupational Therapy evidence base and draw upon current developments in Recovery and Social Inclusion. You will need to be committed to a service user focus and creative in finding ways to help people develop and achieve personal goals.

The post offers the opportunity to develop clinical leadership skills and enhance the Occupational Therapy services across the ADAPT (Anxiety, Depression, Personality Disorder and Trauma) pathway, ensuring the occupational needs of service users are addressed and providing an occupational therapy perspective on service delivery.

You will work alongside OT and multi-disciplinary colleagues, as well as a range of other agencies. You will also be responsible for providing supervision for staff within the team, contributing to the management of the referral system and assisting the team managers with quality improvement and other specific clinical tasks.

The Occupational Therapist will be responsible for the Care Co-ordination of a small specified caseload, within the Anxiety, Depression, Affective Disorders, Personality Disorders and Trauma (ADAPT). The postholder will also work closely with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT), offering specialist occupational performance assessments and interventions, utilising a wide range of skills and experience to promote social inclusion opportunities. You will also contribute and consult on step down planning and facilitate transfer to primary care services wherever possible. In addition, as a clinical specialist OT, you will provide clinical supervision to junior staff and undertake delegated clinical tasks, as required.

We are looking to recruit to an administrative support role largely based at Brian Oliver Centre with the occasional support on in-patient wards located at Brooklands Hospital for the Learning Disabilities and Autism Directorate.

Brooklands is a purpose built hospital, consisting of seven specialist separate units, providing inpatient assessment and treatments services to adults and children who are living with a learning disability. It is a Centre of Excellence and hosts a several different services as detailed below.

The post-holder will be required to work within an integrated and skill mixed team, providing an effective and efficient admin support to clinical staff across the site. You will be required to learn different admin functions in order to provide input to the clinical and admin teams. Due to the nature of the role you must be able to multi-task under pressure and work autonomously and flexibly to meet the needs of the service. This will be an interesting and varied role and we are, therefore, looking for individuals with a positive approach to change and who are supportive of service improvements.
