The Intensive Care Staff Nurse will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care of patients requiring level 2 and 3 care under indirect supervision from senior staff. They are expected to be able to provide general and specialised direct nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols of the healthcare organisation.
To be responsible for the provision of skilled, specialist nursing care to level 2 and level 3 patients within the multidisciplinary care team. There will be a requirement to supervise, on a day to day basis, qualified and newly qualified staff in achieving objectives.A registered nurse who is able to use knowledge and skills to be able to assist and support the provision of care. Additionally, will gain or utilise existing skills in the provision of safe and effective care to level 2 and level 3 patients. The department at North Tees is a busy unit delivering high quality care to both surgical and medical patients. We can provide advanced respiratory, cardiovascular and renal support as required. We are funded for ten level 3 and six level 2 patients, although can utilise the beds flexibly according to patient/service need. We are also pleased to provide an excellent Outreach service to compliment the trusts commitment to patient safety.

Communications and Relationship
• Applies effective communication in clinical practice with a caring and compassionate attitude at all times.
• Utilises communication aids for complex patients who find it difficult to communicate due to sedation or mechanical reason such as tracheostomies.
• Establishes and maintains effective communication with individuals, the wider nursing team, and other health professional regarding patient’s conditions, care planning and treatments.
• To ensure effective communication with patient’s relatives and carers, explaining medical conditions, progress and investigations taking into consideration level of understanding, culture and background.
• Develop and maintain effective channels of communication within the team, engaging, staff at all levels.
• Actively manages barriers to communication across all areas of responsibility to ensure positives outcomes.
• Communicates regularly and effectively with members of the multidisciplinary team regarding all aspects of clinical care and service delivery, including environmental issues.
• To encourage the families to negotiate and take an active role in the welfare and care of their child in hospital
• Must be able to demonstrate the English language proficiency level required for the post
Analytical and Judgement skills
· Working as an autonomous practitioner and part of the multi-disciplinary team to assess and implement care to patients with complex needs.
· Discussions with relatives, patients and service users of a sensitive nature to determine treatment escalation and care planning.
· Able to recognise the signs of the deteriorating patient, stabilise & manage the patient and appropriately escalate as needed.
· Undertake comprehensive assessments of patients and provide specialised level 2 and 3 care.
· Willingness to complete additional courses & enhance skills to provide specialised care at high dependency/intensive care level.
· Makes judgements involving straightforward job related facts or situation
Planning and Organisational Skills
· Plans own work to understand, explain and perform care activities to meet the individuals health and wellbeing needs
Will work on own initiative within their role remit planning and prioritising duties.
· Excellent organisational skills, effective time management skills
· Following successful completion of Critical Care competencies Mentor and facilitate the education of staff nurses, student nurses and HCAs alongside the clinical educator
· Maintain accurate and confidential Critical Care documentation
· Ensure accurate and timely completion of digital Critical Care documentation
• Be familiar with non-invasive and invasive equipment & be able to set equipment up as needed such as Nasal high flow, ventilators, transducer set and NIV.
• Provide skills such as venepuncture, catheterisation and removal of catheters, removal of cannulas, blood glucose monitoring, ketone monitoring, ABG’s and 12 lead ECG.
• The post holder will be a highly trained critical care practitioner with the ability to deliver complex multi-organ support to patients. This includes but not exclusive to;
-Airway management including suction both open and closed.
-Advanced breathing support utilising various modes of ventilation
-Advanced cardiovascular support
-Advanced renal support (CVVHD) or willingness to undertake training
• Delivery of personal care to critically ill patients, maintaining safety of multiple indwelling adjuncts that support organ dysfunction.
• The post holder will be able manage invasive lines within the critical care setting and utilise them to deliver powerful medication, take bloods and monitor perfusion pressures. Perform blood gas sampling and utilise the blood gas analyser, interpret and act on results accordingly. This may involve complex changes to ventilation management.
• Insert/remove urinary catheter as required and be able to insert/remove a bowel management system. To provide stoma care to patients.
• Safe set up and cleaning of a critical care bed space ensuring all safety equipment is ready and available for immediate use.
Patient/Client Care
• Nursing is 1:1 or 1:2 basis therefore the patients provision of care is based on a therapeutic relationship that is focused on patient complex care needs.
• Demonstrates expert professional / clinical competence and credibility.
• Ensure privacy and dignity is achieved for all patients.
• Ensure a safe and comfortable environment for patients, staff and visitors.
• Prevent hospital acquired infection by ensuring the highest standard of infection control, cleanliness and healthcare environment.
• Contribute to the prevention and management of untoward occurrences by responding to emergencies
• Act as patients advocate in all matters relating to his or her care, treatment and welfare acknowledging and incorporating cultural preferences, health beliefs and behaviours.
• Nursing is 1:1 or 1:2 basis therefore the patients provision of care is based on a therapeutic relationship that is focused on patient complex care needs.
