We are looking for a Clinical Trials Assistant to take on an exciting new role, based in the Orthopaedic Research Team but working predominantly with the Newcastle Retrieval Centre based at the Freeman Hospital.

The successful candidate will be based in a small team providing a multi-disciplinary, integrated tissue / implant service within the Trust. Which will develop links with industry, academia and NHS organisations and be able to rapidly answer clinical questions which demand analysis of patient tissue. This will be both an expansion and amalgamation of the existing Newcastle Orthopaedic Retrieval Service (NRC) and the Tissue and Explant Analysis of Medical Implant Failure (TEAM) services to incorporate a range of surgical specialities.

The role will provide an opportunity for the post holder to expand upon their current skills and experience; handling and processing patient samples, contributing towards the expansion of research delivery to beyond the current surgical specialties and working with university based scientists as they analyse samples as we work towards answering important clinical questions.

Support will be provided by an active and engaged group of surgeons, as well as a Clinical Trials Officer, Healthcare Scientist and the wider Orthopaedic Research Team.

Working in a small team under the supervision of a Clinical Trials Officer and supported by the Orthopaedic Research Team the post holder will carry out duties to facilitate important clinical research. The post holder will carry out duties including:

· Identifying and screening potential research participants.

· Approaching patients to discuss our research and obtaining informed consent.

· Input of participant data into research databases, ensuring accurate records.

· Accurate input of participant data onto electronic case report forms.

· Coordination of research sample collection with clinical teams.

· Research sample processing and storage.

· Supporting the team in the overall running of our studies.

• Coordinate and improve trial communication throughout Multi-Disciplinary Teams throughout the Trust

The General Surgery Department at Weston General Hospital, as part of the wider University Hospitals Bristol and Weston are looking for up to 1 new clinical fellow (ST1-2) to help provide high quality care for the adult population of Weston and the larger North Somerset area.

The department is closely involved in the ‘Healthy Weston’ programme and the development of ground breaking Same Day Emergency Surgery (SDEC) pathways, first class elective Day Case Surgery, and Endoscopy. We continue to provide inpatient colorectal cancer care, benign upper GI and post emergency admission care. We have excellent close links with Bristol sites for other visiting specialities, including Hepatobiliary and Oesphagogastric, Breast and Vascular teams.

To reflect the importance of SDEC the on call commitment is 1:8 covering day and nights shifts in a full shift pattern. These posts are integral to the working of the whole department, with close support and supervision from the consultant body. Flexible working patterns can be considered for the right candidate, reflecting the progressive nature of the department we are creating. We expect those applying for these positions to have equivalence of foundation training experience.

As a department of 7 substantive consultants (3 colorectal, 3 Upper GI, 1 General) we want to encourage applicants to these clinical fellow posts to develop professionally at the same rate as deanery trainees in the department. Duties includingcovering elective (Wycombe) and emergency (Stoke Mandeville) activity. There are around 7 all day operating lists per week at Wycombe covering full ranges of elective urology includingrobotic,open, laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery. Attendance in theatre is programmed and the consultant team will provide hands-on teaching, so that the successful candidate will develop considerable operative competencies in all aspects of operative urology. The emergency service is consultant led, and involves daily ward rounds, in-patient reviews. There is a dedicated emergency list every Thursday morning, and access to the emergency list Monday to Friday as required. This role is to support specialist cancer nursing services at Buckinghamshire Hospital NHS Trust (BHT). The role will consist of providing specialist urology and oncology knowledge to patients and to act as an important member of the multi-professional team, providing a service to patients with urological cancer and their carers, from the time of investigation with a suspicion of cancer, to diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance throughout the course of their disease.

• To work as part of the Uro-Oncology CNS team in the management of patients with urological cancers supporting them and their families throughout their cancer journey.
• To take part in clinical duties such as removal of catheter following Radical Prostatectomy and administration of Intravesical Chemo/Immunotherapy. Appropriate training will be provided.
• To be involved in the established nurse-led results clinic for patients following prostate, bladder biopsies and radical surgery. Ensuring patients are discussed at the Urology MDT meeting to establish their treatment plan. This will include receiving and providing patients and their families with highly distressing, sensitive and complex information, using developed empathy, reassurance and counselling skills.
• To provide specialised clinical advice for urological cancer patients and ensure all clinical practice is evidence-based, drawing on published literature and policy guidelines.
• To provide telephone advice and assessment as required.
• To promote liaison between the Trust and the Primary Care Team.
• To actively take part in Holistic Needs Assessments, which explores and provides additional support to patients and their carers through the cancer journey. Appropriate training will be given.
• To participate in nurse-led clinics and to work alongside the urology consultants, to provide a designated specialist service to patients.
