• Serves as a public health expert in developing, planning, coordinating, monitoring, implementing, and evaluating current or projected complex, interrelated public health and clinical / research programs within the Office of Human Research and Community Engagement (OHRCE) involving governmental and non-governmental organizations and individuals from multiple sectors e.g. local, state, national and/or international levels.
• Analyzes existing or proposed systems, strategies, services, or other health-related matters for long range implementation and administration of programs.

• Serve as a Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN) within the Department of Behavioral Health.

• Provide education regarding behavioral and mental health to patients.
• Present patient cases and classes for patient care conferences and academic institutions.

The Peer Specialist functions as an interdisciplinary team member, assisting physicians and other professional/non-professional personnel in a rehabilitation treatment program. Peer specialists perform a variety of therapeutic and supportive tasks that include assisting Veterans in articulating their goals for recovery and personal wellness, learning, and practicing new skills, helping them monitor their progress, assisting them in their treatment, modeling effective coping techniques and self-help strategies based on the peer specialist's own recovery experience, and supporting them in advocating for themselves to obtain effective services.
Duties include, but not limited to the following:

• Participates in the service, training, consultation, and other professional activities of VA health care services and functions as a fully vested member of the multidisciplinary team.
• Uses personal recovery experiences to model coping techniques and recovery tolls to coach Veterans to relevant skills need for self-management of their health condition(s) and pursuit of their personal wellness.
• Observes behaviors that might indicate difficulty adapting or responding to treatment (e.g., missed assessment appointments, failure to attend or maintain abstinence, risk to self or others, disruptive behavior), completes appropriate documentation, and reports concerns to the treatment team in a timely manner.
• Uses ongoing individual and group meetings to teach Veterans how to identify and combat negative self-talk and overcome fears by providing a forum that allows Veteran to share their experiences.
• As necessary, handles crisis interventions for Veterans and addresses other emergent situations without the benefit of specific instructions.
• Informs Veterans about VA and community supports and resources, including how to effectively utilize them in the recovery and wellness process.
• Maintains a working knowledge of current trends and developments in holistic approaches in wellness and recovery by reading books, journals, and other relevant materials.

• Provides supervision and guidance to all members of the Suicide Prevention Program Team and performs the duties for the Salisbury VA Healthcare System nationally set for the Suicide Prevention Coordinator role
• Responsible for identifying systematic problems for resolution and/or areas of improvement, tracking progress of improvements, and reporting significant activities to leadership
• Assists with the budget for Suicide Prevention Program, represents Suicide Prevention and/or Psychology as appointed to various mental health and medical center committees

The Mental Health Service Line provides care in several psychiatric settings: inpatient units, ambulatory programs, residential program for substance abuse, residential program for PTSD, emergency department, medical-surgical ward psychiatric consultation and geriatrics with extended programs. Psychiatrists within the Mental Health Service are able to perform and teach all of the services required in the practice of psychiatry to psychiatry residents. Educational experiences are also provided to appropriate health care personnel who seek training in mental health services (e.g. medical students, psychology and social work interns, physician assistant and nursing students, and non-psychiatric medical residents).

Section Chief duties include but are not limited to the following:

• Provide clinical and administrative coverage for Charlotte Outpatient Mental Health
• Be part of an on-call rotation of psychiatrists, which may include rounds on acute patients during weekends and holiday
• Supervise psychiatry staff
• Provide the general oversight of advanced clinical providers working in Mental Health.
• Provide clinical coverage of Inpatient Units and Outpatient Units, as necessary
• Advice and counsel workers on work and administrative matters
• Participate and coordinate Medical Center clinical committees, as required.
• Managing Psychiatry discipline - specific issues/concerns as appropriate to the authority delegated.
• Work with the other Mental Health supervisors to ensure that appropriate disposition services and meaningful therapeutic treatments are being offered throughout the department.
• Act in the absence of Mental Health Service Chief and serves on the management team of the Mental Health Service Line.
• Review and approval/disapproval of leave requests
• Assure that subordinates are trained and fully compliant with the provisions of safety regulations.

• Application of accepted protocols for assessment of the individual presenting for psychiatric care. Assessment may include gathering verbal and documented history, mental status examination and medical and laboratory evaluation.
• Diagnostic description or formulation to guide appropriate acute and secondary treatment interventions.
• Provision of psychiatric care according to his/her privileges.
• Be available for all emergency psychiatric interventions during on-call hours
• Provide or assist residents and/or Advanced Clinical Providers in the process of evaluation and treatment of the psychiatric patient, and actively participate in corrective actions against untoward responses to psychiatric interventions
• Evaluate the patient to assess changes in the physical and mental status. A progress note is written in the patient's chart. Notes also include the concurrence with notes written by the resident and attending notes as appropriate.
• Perform inpatient and outpatient psychiatry evaluations and treatment as the team leader
• Participate in various hospital committees, departmental and hospital in-service programs, and education programs of the department and the hospital. They are also involved in continuous quality improvement through the peer review process
• Initiate or participate in an ongoing research activity. Faculty appointments to affiliated medical schools are available, as teaching medical students, residents and other disciplines is essential
• Regularly creates and maintains an environment that ensures confidentiality of privacy for patients
• Continually promotes teamwork by cooperating with and supporting staff, visitors and customers in achieving hospital goals/mission

Supervisory Dietitian duties include, but are not limited to:

• Provides food-operations-specific leadership, serving as professional and technical advisor to staff and other health care professionals.
• Has oversight over HR staffing, employee relations and labor relations in Food Service Operations.
• Exercises a full range of supervisory and personnel management authorities and responsibilities in planning, directing, and assessing work of subordinate staff.
• Establishes a training plan for the food operations section.
• Develops and leads food operations.
• Establishes strategic goals and ensures priorities align with the strategic plan of the NFS department, VISN and national programs.
• Leads the continuous quality improvement effort in Food Service Operations.
• Identifies and prioritizes problems, sets long and short-term goals, develops action plans and analyses data to evaluate progress to improve outcomes.
• Develops and updates policies and procedures and establishes and oversees a system for regulatory compliance. Coordinates food service operation policies and procedures with clinical nutrition management, nursing and other services, as applicable.
• Manages the budget and other resources, anticipating future trends and inflation, new service opportunities, recommendations for growth, efficiencies and strategic efforts are factored into resource requests and brought to the Chief.
• Directs staff in management of contracts, subsistence, supply purchasing for NFS and submits reports to the NFS Chief.
• Solicits support and/or negotiates with facility managers to influence decisions to support food operations section success.
