Post Title: Nutrition and Dietetics & Speech and Language Therapy Manager Pay Band: 8B Hours: 37.5 per week Contract: Permanent Location / Department: Aconbury West, WRH, Therapies Department Accountable to: Chief Nursing Officer Reports to: Head of Therapies Ref: Key Working Relationships: SLTs, Registered Dietitians (RD), administrative and clerical staff, and the wider therapy team. Medical and nursing staff, GPs, members of the Trusts senior management team (including directorate general managers), Community services, private sector providers, support services, statutory and voluntary organisations, HEIs, patients and their relatives or carers. Risk Assessment:Whilst undertaking the clinical component of the post there is an on-going requirement for light physical effort i.e. using a Flexible nasendoscope, carrying out bedside swallowing assessments, changing voice prostheses requiring moderate bending on a frequent basis. There is an occasional need for moderate physical effort i.e. manual handling activities. There is a constant need for prolonged mental effort e.g. chairing meetings, dictation of complex GP letters. This post carries a high level of stress, requiring high levels of continued concentration with frequent interruptions to answer unrelated or multi-professional queries. The ability to be able to continually work on diverse projects simultaneously is required. Regular exposure to body fluids (saliva, sputum, blood) when working with patients with swallowing difficulties, altered airways. Potential exposure to infection eg MRSA, CDiff. Working at a PC/VDU on a regular basis. Attending videofluoroscopy clinics infrequently involving potential risk of radiation exposure. Job Purpose: To be responsible for the day to day management and the provision and development of equitable Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) and Nutrition and Dietetic (N&D) services, within budget, for an agreed level of activity and at an agreed level of service and clinical quality, across the three sites of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. To work as an experienced autonomous practitioner undertaking regular clinical workload in a chosen Therapy speciality in order to maintain clinical skills. To provide expert advice within area of clinical specialism to medical and nursing staff across all Divisions and to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team (MDT). To be responsible for the Education, Training and Development of the Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) and Nutrition and Dietetic (N&D) workforce. To work with other members of the Therapy Management Team, members of the Trust management team, other healthcare organisations, agencies and professionals to ensure high quality care is provided for patients. Key Duties: MANAGEMENT To ensure effective SLT and N&D services are delivered within Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. To match skill mix to workload, set priorities and actively manage resources to achieve an equitable, comprehensive service on all acute sites within the given financial constraints. To manage, review and evaluate existing services to ensure that changing demands on the service and resource issues are addressed and that an equitable service is provided across the county. To plan and implement appropriate developments within SLT and N&D services, including meeting local and national priorities. To resolve operational issues within SLT and N&D, ensure effective channels of communication are in place and maintained and duties are delegated to site managers and Clinical Leads as appropriate. To work across professional boundaries with agencies, statutory, voluntary and private organisations countywide. To work closely with Herefordshire and Worcestershire STP colleagues to introduce and develop joint working arrangements between the acute and community sectors. To lead the manpower planning, recruitment and retention process, including succession planning. To ensure accurate service reports are produced in a timely manner for the Head of Therapy Services as required. Ensure that systems are in place to collect activity and workload data in order to financial partners and commissioning and thus ensure Trust income for both services. To support the Head of Therapy Services in the business and capacity planning process, producing business cases as required and contributing to other specialties plans which have a SLT or N&D component. To investigate and respond to the SLT and N&D aspects of complaints within the given time frame and ensure that any identified actions are implemented. To manage the day to day running of the wider therapy management team in the absence of the Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy/Orthotic managers and deputise for the Head of Therapy Services on various issues and projects as required. To manage the SLT and N&D budgets, working closely with the Finance department in budget setting and ensuring financial targets are achieved. To monitor, manage and evaluate Service Level Agreements with other Trusts and services as necessary. To seek funding for continued service enhancement. To authorise payroll documentation, payment of staff expense and invoices for goods and services. To be responsible for the management of human resource issues, including maternity leave, change of work patterns, annual and other leave, grading and capability issues to ensure the workforce meets the caseload requirement. To monitor and take any actions required regarding sickness absences in line with Trust policy. To ensure all SLT and N&D are registered with the Health Care Professions Council. To use initiative and in conjunction with the site managers, take action to ensure core service provision is maintained by prioritisation of services and redeployment of staff during time of staff shortages. To develop and implement departmental and administrative policies and procedures. To chair and guide meetings for both services and the wider Therapies Directorate (as required) and ensure there is appropriate representation at meetings. To undertake any other duties commensurate with the level/expertise of the post to ensure the smooth running of the SLT and N&D service.
