We are looking for a Locum Healthcare Assistant to cover an assignment with the Ministry of Defence (MoD), at Abingdon Medical Centre, in Abingdon, Oxfordshire.

This is a full-time locum role (37 hours per week) and the successful candidate will deliver an exceptional standard of care to the MoD service personnel.

Job Description – Service Requirements

• To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, providing basic ward-based nursing care within a Defence Primary Healthcare (DPHC) bedded down facility, to the Defence Medical Services (DMS) entitled Population at Risk (PAR)
• To provide general basic nursing care under supervision and direction of the Lead Practice Nurse, undertaking tasks and duties delegated by a suitably qualified and registered healthcare professional.
• To provide medical administrative support as required.
• To assist the Medical Officer’s (MOs) and practice nurse teams within Primary Health Care clinics, Occupational Health assessment clinics, chronic disease clinics and with health promotion.
• To record a range of clinical observations, tests and measurements such as, visual acuity, recording Electrocardiograms (ECGs), venepuncture, peak flow readings, spirometry, urinalysis and preparation of specimens for investigation, whilst working within individual scope of competence and following DMS and DPHC policy and procedures.
• To communicate effectively with patients in specific clinical situations and work collaboratively with the nursing team and administrative staff to meet the needs of patients.
• To comply with infection, prevention and control requirements.
• To use equipment in accordance with local equipment care directives and comply with Health and Safety policy and regulations.

Essential Requirements/ / Qualifications / Experience

• Must have a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ/SVQ) Level 3 in Health and Social Care (or an equivalent Healthcare related NVQ).
• Must have a minimum of 2 years recent experience within the last 3 years of working in general practice or other healthcare environment as an HCA.
• Must be in date for Basic Life Support (BLS), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC).
• Must be able to provide certificates of training, as undertaken within the last three years, and/or be able to provide proof of clinical competency from a previous employer or Line Manager, who is a current registered healthcare professional, in:
- Recording ECGs
- Performing Venepuncture
- Performing urinalysis
- Preparation of specimens
- Undertaking simple dressing procedures
- Using aseptic technique
• Must be in date and able to provide certification for Safeguarding Children and Young People and Safeguarding Adults up to and including Level 2 training.

Information about the Service:

Our client is a specialist nursing home supporting adults with physical disability and/or long-term neurological conditions, including cerebral palsy, epilepsy, brain injury, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, speech impairment, spina bifida, hydrocephalus or stroke.

Many of our residents require assistance with meals, drinks, and general nutrition. Some residents have communication challenges or cannot communicate verbally. About the Role This is an exciting alternative career option open to RGN's and qualified Paramedics with 3+ years' post qualification experience. Custody is both a dynamic and lively environment, with no two days the same. The police can detain individuals for up to 24 hours and within this time, we provide a high level of care to detainees and their needs, which can vary from drug/alcohol dependency to acute medical episodes. Our dedicated healthcare professionals are also fully trained to collect forensic samples which can assist the police with their investigations. Experience within forensics is NOT NECESSARY. As a Forensic Custody Healthcare Professional, you will work closely with the police and receive training and support to become an accredited Forensic Practitioner. Previous experience in any of the following would be ideal to assist you in the role: A&E, walk-in centre, substance misuse, community nursing, police custody, prison, as a Paramedic Practitioner, Registered Nurse or other relevant discipline. Hours of Work If you're struggling to maintain a good work-life balance and are looking for clearer boundaries, then this role could be for you. The 4-on-4-off rota pattern will give you the ability to plan your personal life months in advance. The shift pattern comprises of two day shifts, two night shifts, then 4 days off. This is a full time position working in the Abingdon Custody Suite.
