At Colchester hospital, we are seeking to recruit a dynamic, motivated and enthusiastic nurse to join our friendly and busy day surgery unit to provide exemplary care to our patients admitted to the unit.

Elmstead Day Surgery Unit is a 23+ bedded day surgery ward adjacent to 5 operating theatres. We are a nurse led discharge unit who admits all day cases as well as taking post-operative day cases from other theatre units within the trust.

This post is integral to the effectiveness of our busy and forward thinking department and provides an exciting opportunity for you to play a fundamental role in the caring for a patient undergoing a surgical procedure in the Colchester Hospital.

Contribute professional expertise to current service provision and future service developments. Undertake highly specialist clinical work Provide Speech and Language Therapy advice to other disciplines, providing training, supervision and support as required. Carry out professional leadership responsibilities as delegated by the Head of Older Persons Community Therapy (Mental Health). Undertake research and other tasks that contribute to the implementation of the Trust Strategy for Allied Health Professions.

You will join our friendly and dedicated multidisciplinary Older Persons Community and in-patients Mental Health Therapy Service. We have monthly, clinically focused, departmental meetings where cases are discussed and we learn from each other. You will receive regular professional supervision and professional development is positively encouraged. We are supportive of flexible and home working. Clinical Duties: To manage complex and specialist caseload independently. To manage and prioritise own workload and caseload independently. To assess clients referred for specialist Speech and Language Therapy. To utilise specialist assessments when presented with complex cases. To undertake treatment planning, communicating and negotiating treatment plans and clinical reasoning for intervention with clients and their carers. To develop clear care plans based on best practice. To provide specialist professional advice regarding the management and care of patients with dementia &/or feeding and swallowing difficulties, where appropriate. To make decisions on the level of treatment intervention required. To communicate agreed treatment/care plans to multi-disciplinary team colleagues and partnership agencies and liaise with them at formal and informal meetings. To communicate complex condition related information from assessment to service users, carers, families and members of the multi-disciplinary team/other professions. To work closely with service users, carers and families, agreeing decision making relevant to the patient/client management. To demonstrate empathy with service users, carers, families and colleagues, ensuring that effective communication is achieved, particularly where barriers to understanding exist. To undertake joint assessments with other professionals within the specialist area of dementia. To manage a complex caseload. To regularly review clients progress in order to evaluate and interpret effectiveness of treatment plans, and amend treatment or discharge clients accordingly. To ensure that the treatment offered is based on the best available evidence. To keep up to date clinical records in line with professional standards and local record keeping policies. To maintain up to date and accurate case notes in line with RCSLT professional standards and local Trust policies. We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Clinical Pharmacist in surgery to join our modern purpose-built facilities at ESNEFT. This key position will allow a committed and self-motivated Pharmacist to lead our Pharmacy services to surgical patients on our Colchester site.

You will be a fully established member of the multi-disciplinary team within surgery but with an opportunity to develop and establish the pharmacy service as part of the Weight Management Service for bariatric surgery. You will be pivotal in developing our clinical service within the speciality and will have responsibility for the provision of Pharmacy parenteral nutrition services including the opportunity to be a part of the multidisciplinary team. Other specialist surgery services that you will be a part of will include vascular surgery and urology.

In addition to our fully automated dispensaries, we host one of the NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service medicines advice sites and a brand new aseptic facility.
• Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure medicines optimisation strategies are embedded as part of the surgery practice; minimising drug wastage and managing the use of high-cost medicines accordingly.
• Provide an advanced level clinical pharmacy service to surgical patients in line with the pharmacy Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and agreed clinical standards.
• Provide ongoing clinical support and guidance to pharmacy colleagues contributing to the clinical pharmacy service within surgery.
• Develop clinical pharmacy input into Surgical Services and provide departmental leadership into this speciality.
• Be the lead clinical pharmacist in the provision of parenteral nutrition services, in accordance with local and national standards and strategy.
• Oversee the implementation of, and further development of, the Trust’s Weight Management service for bariatric surgery

Are you an enthusiastic and motivated individual looking for a future career as a qualified Pharmacy Technician? This training post includes an apprenticeship and starts in February 2025 and will end 26th February 2027 and is at Colchester Hospital.

You need to meet the apprenticeship criteria and have a minimum of 4 GCSEs or equivalent at Grade 9–4 or A*-C (Maths, English and Chemistry or Biology).

You must be self-directed to meet deadlines, committed to self-study and effectively use study time given by the department to complete the course and be eligible to register with the General Pharmaceutical Council as a Pharmacy Technician. You must demonstrate an understanding and compliance with the values and behaviours expected of NHS staff and the Standards for Pharmacy Professionals.

The pharmacy is a busy department covering a diverse range of activities and functions including: dispensary, logistics, quality control, manufacture/preparation of medicines/products including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition, clinical trials, ward based/clinical activities, medicines information and community services. We have an automated robotic dispensing and stock supply system. This course places emphasis on clinical ward based and dispensary work.

You will be required to participate in our 7 day service provision and will have a short placement at Ipswich hospital site to gain an understanding of pharmacy services provided by them.

Salary will be Band 4 Annex 21: Year 1 (£20,379) 70% top Band 4 and Year 2 (£21,835) 75% top Band 4. Internal applicants will be via Annex 30.

You will undertake a Certificate of Higher Education, in Pharmacy Technician Practice delivered by the School of Pharmacy at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. The course has a blended learning approach using e-learning, classroom tutorials, practical sessions and portfolio building. There will be on-going assessments, observations with mandatory study days and forums.

This course places emphasis on clinical ward based and dispensary work. You will communicate and work effectively with patients, ward based teams and multi-disciplinary staff to provide a safe, timely and efficient patient-centred service aiding supply, patient compliance and discharges. The course also includes Accredited Checking, Medicines Management and Medicines Reconciliation.

You must be able to attend mandatory study days, follow procedures, apply theory to practice and have an interest in a career as a hospital based Pharmacy Technician. Appropriate supervision and training will be provided throughout.
