Postdoctoral Project Research Scientist - Signalling and Structural Laboratory

Short summary
The Francis Crick Institute is recruiting a lab-based postdoctoral project research scientist to lead on the development of agonist antibodies that promote neuro-regeneration in neurological disease. The successful candidate will join the laboratory of Dr N.Q. McDonald (https://www.crick.ac.uk/research/labs/neil-mcdonald) and will collaborate with both the Neurodegeneration Biology Laboratory (https://www.crick.ac.uk/research/labs/sonia-gandhi) and Dom Bonnet at the Francis Crick Institute. The position is fully funded by the idea-to-innovation programme at the Crick to translate basic research findings into therapeutics.

The Research Group
The Signalling and Structural Biology Laboratory studies kinase-driven control mechanisms, assemblies and networks, focusing on processes such as neuro-regeneration, cell polarity and cell fate. Our goal is to understand how kinase control mechanisms are subverted in different human diseases. In parallel we have developed biological and chemical tools against neurotrophic and polarity protein kinase targets. In some cases, these tools have led to the development of lead clinical candidates (PMID: 23418854 & https://www.varianbio.com). Research techniques used in our multidisciplinary laboratory environment include cryo-electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron tomography, biochemical and biophysical methods, chemical biology, cell culture models for neuronal differentiation and cell polarity.


Key Responsibilities
• To produce and characterise agonist antibodies and variants for use in dopaminergic neurons programmed from PD patient-derived iPSCs.
• To assess the potency of the antibody on different neuronal cell lines.
• Engage with collaborators to reformat the antibody and undertake a structure-guided antibody affinity maturation.
• To pilot trans-well experiments to assess antibody properties at crossing the blood-brain-barrier using an in vitro model.
• To act as the de facto project manager, liaising with collaborators and Crick service providers.
• To present results at internal meetings, conferences and, ultimately, to funders and investors.

About the role
We're shaking things up with a new approach! Join us on a 12-month contract to lead and embed change, as we transition to light-touch analysis shared across our ICT function.

Bring your IT Analyst expertise to the table and assist us craft the training, support, and coaching necessary to make this shift seamless. You'll be instrumental in developing new toolsets and analysis templates that'll promote efficiency and innovation.

With our multi-site organisation amid various transformations, you'll have a plethora of projects, leading and enhancing each one with your skills and vision.

During your time with us, you will support the following activities -

1. Training of ICT staff in analysis.
2. Wi-Fi/Local Area Network pilot and start of implementation.
3. Wide Area Network replacement (end of contract).
4. E-commerce order fulfilment and stock storage/management.
5. Collections Management system requirements definition

This position offers the flexibility to work from home, on a hybrid basis, though some travel may be occasionally required to SMG sites, suppliers, and peer organisations.

Salary: £46,000 - £53,900 per annum

About you
With equal parts of business analysis experience, you have the skill to flex your style or communication to meet the needs of a range of activities. With this, you have a great aptitude in imparting your knowledge onto others, having developed colleagues in business analysis skillsets, as well as creating materials in the form of toolkits and templates.

We are looking for a true analyst and process improvement professional, rather than technical skill. Because of this, you will have significant experience of analysing business activities leading to client sign-off of requirement specifications.

You are customer-focused, approachable, organised and a good listener. Keen to get involved and a natural collaborator, you can work with people of all levels to establish a technical vision and to analyse the trade-offs between usability and functional and performance needs.
