Estates & Maintenance Assistant – To Start January 2025
Hallfield School, Edgbaston, Birmingham
£24,612 - £27,428 per annum dependent on experience, skills and qualifications
40 hrs per week 10:00am – 7:00pm, Monday to Friday (with the need to be flexible to occasionally work outside these hours as required), working all year round with 30 days’ annual leave plus paid bank holidays.
The Role
Hallfield School is seeking to appoint a skilled Estates & Maintenance Assistant to assist with day to day maintenance and compliance of the School estate. This is an integral role within the Estates team and the successful candidate must be confident to lead and complete projects such as minor alterations and refurbishment tasks.
NVQ Level 2 or above in any trade such as carpentry, plastering, plumbing or construction would also be advantageous. In addition, any experience in multi-trade skills would be highly desirable.
The role offers a varied day, within a busy environment, covering maintenance, grounds work and compliance checks and testing. It would suit an individual who takes pride in their work, is able to show initiative whilst working supportively and flexibly within a team.
Key responsibilities of the Estates & Maintenance Assistant include, but are not limited to:
o Carrying out routine maintenance of school facilities in accordance with schedules or in response to break downs including carpentry; plumbing; basic electrical; decorating; drains/gutters.
o Assisting the Estates & Maintenance Manager with the running of heating systems.
o Carrying out safety checks on all school vehicles.
o Assisting with moving furniture and equipment for school events and carry out car park duties as required.
o Responding to emergency breakdowns/incidents and provide relief cleaning in emergencies if required.
o Undertaking weekly and monthly compliance tests including statutory testing of fire safety systems and equipment tests, water flushing, emergency lighting.
o Carrying out audits and checks as requested by the Director of Estates & Facilities.
o Driving the School minibus

The Person
The key skills, experience and qualities required to be the Estates & Maintenance Assistant:
o Experience of working in a similar role, ideally within an educational setting
o Understanding of Health & Safety requirements and principles in a school environment including COSHH
o Knowledge of emergency procedures such as fire evacuation
o Experience of the building trade with a wide range of skills for example plumbing, basic electrics, plastering and general building work (with a qualification such as City & Guilds and NVQ being advantageous) and willingness to work across all disciplines
o Competent with a wide range of tools and machinery relevant to the role
o Effective written and verbal communication skills
o Strong literacy and numeracy skills with administrative experience for example in stock taking and report writing
o Organised and flexible, with a willingness to work unsociable hours if required
o A full driving licence is essential

Job duties are to assist company owner in clients gardens with hedge cutting, lawn mowing, weeding, pruning, hoeing, brush cutting. Technical Ensure that equipment supplied by ACT is safe to use and in good repair by performing the annual maintenance checks. This involves a careful visual examination of the device, its accessories and the mains connections and cables, a functional inspection followed by an electrical safety test to confirm that the device meets the Statuatry Electrical Safety Testing requirements and completion of the clinical review questionaire . To conduct unaccompanied visits to clients to inspect existing equipment. These environments are often cramped and occasionally unpleasant conditions. This could include schools, hospitals and nursing/care or the clients home. This could be shadowed by trainees or other healthcare professionals on occasions. Withdraw equipment, where appropriate, from the client's environment this may require contact with carers of recently deceased clients. Identify and resolve basic faults on complex equipment. Be able to use electric safety testing equipment, and hand tools requiring fine precision, eg screwdriver, tweezers, hammer etc Maintain and manage their own levels of stock (eg chargers, batteries etc), to be carried with the post holder when out on visits to clients home. Assist, by setting up equipment and providing technical support in the delivery of training by ACT clinicians to students, professionals and members of the public. Required skills and Responsibilities: Demonstrable and proven experience of working in a property maintenance environment. Previously worked as Maintenance Support, Caretaker / Handyperson or Painter / Decorator Experience of Carpentry / Decorating and Plumbing and basic awareness of Mechanical & electrical plant and equipment. Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation. Good levels of interpersonal, communication and time management skills with an ability to work under pressure to meet strict deadlines. Excellent communication skills verbal and written with both internal and external customers. Be highly self-motivated with the ability to prioritise work, maintain confidentiality and work independently or as part of a team. Excellent problem solving skills. Offer flexibility at all times, as the occasional need to work unsociable hours will be required.
