This position is located in the Harry S. Truman VA Medical Center, Surgical Care, Optometry & Ophthalmology Clinics. Major duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

The Supervisory Health Technician (Ophthalmology) is responsible for the supervision, administrative management, direction of ophthalmology staff, and supervises interactions of Health Technicians (Ophthalmology) with affiliate ophthalmology residents. May be delegated full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the ophthalmology staff activities for the service or equivalent unit at an independent outpatient clinic. Has full supervisory responsibility over a section or equivalent work unit. Typical duties include preparing work assignments, monitoring clinical performances of ophthalmology staff, volunteers, and/or students, conducting performance appraisals, and other clinical and administrative responsibilities to ensure that the mission of the service and the medical center has been satisfied. Assures compliance with accrediting agency and regulatory requirements, and the quality management program, assuring corrective action is initiated as needed. Assures orientation and competency assessment of assigned staff. Develops policies and procedures; manages document control; develops performance standards, position descriptions and functional statements; and is responsible for professional and administrative management of an assigned area to include budget execution. Maintains interdepartmental relations with other services to accomplish medical center goals. May have overall responsibility for planning, assessing, and evaluating programs to ensure proper coordination between care delivered by the program and overall delivery of healthcare within the facility, or coordination of non-VA care as appropriate.

• Provide nursing care within the Operating Room Nursing Service, Department of Nursing.
• Provide professional and paraprofessional perioperative care of patients undergoing surgical procedures ranging from routine to high acuity or trauma cases with highly complex surgical care requirements.
• Takes counts (needles, sponges, etc.) labels, handles and assures proper disposition of surgical specimens.
• Assist Same Day Surgery, in preparation of the surgical patient day of surgery to include intravenous placement, computer based charting, and open communication with the Operating Room, Anesthesia, Post Anesthesia Care Unit and surgical staff.
• Serve as preceptor/instructor for newly assigned graduate nurses, BSN students from local colleges, nurses from the Army's Operating Room Nurse Reserve Course and reservists.

The Health Technician assists with clinic flow, clinic stocking and performs various basic direct
patient care activities according to facility policy, and that do not require nursing licensure or
professional nursing education. He/she is also responsible for timely and accurate documentation
of care in the electronic medical record. This includes reporting of subjective/objective
information to ensure continuity between the health care team members. Some of the duties associated with this position include, but are not limited to the following:

• Ability to prepare patient and products for dressing changes and performs cast removals.
• Properly sets up a sterile field for procedures when assisting the nurse/physician in patient treatment.

Major duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Assist with acute care licensed staff with the delivery of complex and specialized patient care in possible life-threatening situations.
• Recognize life-threating situations and act to correct emergent and urgent situations according to national/local policy and/or protocol after proper education, training and competency demonstrating knowledge skills, and abilities.
• Perform patient screening by observation-based and collecting patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel.
• Documents all observations and interventions appropriately in Electronic Health Record. Notifies licensed personnel of any observations outside of normal.
• Assist and support behavioral/psychiatric situations in the emergency setting include assisting licensed personnel with crisis intervention and with the management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients, by providing one-to-one observations and applying prevention and management of disruptive behavior techniques (PMDB).
• Use communication techniques required to complete the questioners and templates approved for use in the ED, including active listening, restating, and mirroring.

Duties include but are not limited to:

• The phlebotomist provides assistance of technical, specialized, support nature to health and medical personnel in the diagnosis or treatment of patient illnesses or medical conditions.
• Receives requests or instructions for venipuncture (blood drawing) and urine collection.
• Interprets requests or instructions for medical or health care personnel.
• Secures patients' confidence and cooperation during procedures.
• Explains procedures (venipuncture), positions patients for desired results, and cushions and shields patients as appropriate.

The MRT HIT analyzes, abstracts, maintains, extracts, and compiles information from the health record. Duties to include but not limited to the following:

• Completes appropriate laboratory documents to accompany blood samples to the laboratory.
• Transports patients and specimens to required destinations.
• Prepares and assists with examinations, diagnostic, and therapeutic tests according to written procedures and policies.
• Performs and records a variety of advanced specialized treatments that include nasal, nasopharyngeal and/or tracheotomy suctioning, inserting urethral and suprapubic catheters, institutes and maintains bladder irrigations with three-way urethral catheters. Utilizes aseptic techniques when applying compresses or complicated dressings that may include irrigations and packing, and empties Hemovac and Jackson-Pratt drains.
