The Hillingdon Hospital wishes to appoint a Senior Clinical Fellowto join the General Surgery department for a 6 month fixed-term contract (03/04/24) - 01/10/24).

The job covers a wide variety of general surgery and colorectal surgery. It is expected that the candidate will be closely involved in the colorectal service providing support in both elective colorectal surgery and out-patient commitments.

This is an excellent senior post with lots of scope to improve both elective general and colorectal surgery as well as emergency surgery.

The role will focus primarily on colorectal and general surgery and the post holder will be required to partake in the on-call rota. The post is essential to meet the ongoing colorectal and General Surgical expansion.

The department has 11 substantive consultants and five locum consultants with middle grade and juniors to support them. This post does not have educational approval and is therefore a service post.

Additionally the candidate will participate in elective general surgery operating lists including elective colon resections, laparoscopic cholecystectomies and both laparosocopic and open hernia repairs.

The Hillingdon Hospital, which is situated near Uxbridge in the south of the London Borough of Hillingdon, has over 600 beds. In the north sector, Mount Vernon Hospital is also managed by Hillingdon Trust.

The hospital offers a wide range of specialities, treating 44,000 in-patients a year. Amongst these services is a large A&E department, which deals with approximately 100,000 attendances per year, an Acute Cardiac Unit and Intensive Care Unit with an adjoining four-bedded High Dependency Unit.

Five years ago the A&E department underwent a redevelopment programme. Facilities exist for assessment, treating and discharge of minor injuries. In addition to the refurbishment of the resuscitation area, there exists a five-bedded Observation ward. A Medical and Surgical Assessment Unit is on Fleming ward to which all emergency admissions are directed. There is already consultant physician presence and responsibility in place for medical emergencies.

Hillingdon Hospital has seven operating theatres including a dedicated Orthopaedic theatre. The hospital has an excellent Day Care Unit adjacent to the operating theatres comprising of 23 beds. At Mount Vernon Hospital site there is a new treatment centre providing modern Orthopaedic and General Surgical wards, theatres with laparoscopic facilities and outpatient consulting rooms.

The Division of Support Service offers excellent diagnostic facilities in Endoscopy, Pathology, Radiology and Medical Physics at both sites.

The post holder is expected to keep the stores area clean and in a secure condition in accordance with Health and Safety regulations and report any concerns to the supervisor or ward manager. This post offers a good training opportunity for a basic surgical trainee who has a career interest in general surgery but needs more experience to obtain a position. The post holder will have been exposed to a wide range of surgical conditions both elective and emergency.

Initially the SHO will sit in on the clinics indicated on the job plan but as experience is gained the post holder will see his/her own new patients and discuss management with the consultant. Education objectives will be set at the beginning of the post and progress towards these will be regularly reviewed. Opportunities for clinical research are available and the SHO will be expected to take part in on-going research and clinical audit projects within the surgical department.

Clinical responsibilities We expect the post-holder to develop and lead a robust service in order to provide high quality care to patients with kidney disease and medical inpatients in a timely manner: 4 to be responsible for inpatients on a rota basis, currently 1 week in 6 on-call on ward 7b and 1 week in 6 on ward 7a (Monday-Friday). 4 to be responsible for providing advice and input to patients with renal problems referred by other specialties when on-call or when attending a clinic at Cheltenham General Hospital 4 to provide advice regarding patients with renal problems referred by GPs and other staff (eg pharmacists, Nurse Practitioners etc) including via Cinapsis and Advice and Guidance as needed 4 to provide outpatient clinics, currently approximately 3 per week, in CGH, GRH and Dursley 4 to review new patients to the renal wards during on-call weekends as well as potential discharges or those causing concern 4 to be available to review or advise regarding renal patients in ED or SDEC (Same Day Emergency Care) in a timely manner when on-call 4 to lead with on development of Home Therapies, including expansion of our Home Haemodialysis programme, working alongside our specialist nurses and dialysis provider 4 to contribute to consultant-led procedure lists.
