What skills and experience we're looking for

We are seeking a well-qualified and enthusiastic science graduate to grow and enhance our large and successful science team.

The science department is a highly successful one, making a significant contribution to EBacc progress scores that are consistently significantly above the national average. In 2023 (lates validated data), KS4 science value added was significantly above national and in the top 28% of all schools. Attainment across all courses in KS5 is also strong, with Biology A level in the top 20% of all schools.

We would expect the successful candidate to teach all science disciplines at Key Stage 3 and in Key Stage 4 Combined Science and their specialist subject in KS4 Triple Science. We offer the full range of science courses in the sixth form and therefore applicants should have the ability to teach A level or BTEC level 3 Applied Science at Key Stage 5. We also offer GCSE and A level Psychology within the Science department.

The successful candidate will work closely with the leadership team of department to lead on the following areas:

• Quality assuring schemes of work and resources to ensure that the needs of all students are catered for, and that school and team improvement priorities are fully implemented and evaluated for impact, making recommendations for improvement where required
• Quality assuring teaching and learning
• Developing and delivering training to staff to develop subject knowledge and pedagogical subject knowledge
• Working in collaboration with other departments to share outstanding practice
• Engaging with and disseminating current educational research

About the role

Explainers provide live interpretation in the museum galleries for all our visitors. They also deliver a wide-ranging and creative programme of activities and events for diverse audiences including schools, families, adults and community groups. They reveal the wonder of science by telling authentic stories about our collection and facilitating and supporting the learning of children and adults.

Your role is to engage with visitors and help them learn from our exhibits and collection. About the role

You will help to deliver an innovative neuro-oncology research project; developing a new preclinical in vivo model of NF2-null meningioma and investigating immunotherapies. The project involves using single-cell RNA-sequencing and murine models of NF2-null tumours, patient-derived xenograft drug screening and validation with a variety of wet-lab techniques. This role is advertised on a fixed-term basis for 2.5 years due to external funding.

The role will be ideally suited to an early-career researcher who is motivated to join a vibrant neuro-oncology research community at the University of Plymouth’s Brain Tumour Research centre of excellence.

Essential:

• Ph.D (or close to completion) in neuro-oncology, immunology or other closely related and relevant subject.
• Competence in a variety of laboratory techniques.
• Extensive knowledge of cancer cell biology and tumour-associated immune cells.
• Skill in protocol development and optimisation.

Desirable:

• Experience in animal research and/or UK Home Office PIL A/B + C (rodents).
• Experience in single-cell RNA-sequencing and/or other omics techniques.
• Bioinformatics skills.
• First-author publications and/or other demonstrable research impacts.

The Parkinson lab’s neuro-oncology research focus centres around NF2-null nervous system tumours; meningioma, schwannoma and ependymoma. We have access to an excellent biobank of primary tumour cells, and use genetic and xenograft murine models to drive translational preclinical research.

Peninsula Medical School:

Are you enthusiastic, well organised and versatile, with a strong interest in research? Do you have a background in plant bioactive research with experience in bioactive analysis? Are you interested in working with a collaborative research team and want to use your skills and experience to develop research approaches for translation of bioactive-based concepts into real world applications?

We are looking for a researcher to join our research team to investigate the benefits of plant bioactive compounds on animal productivity in a collaborative project with academic and industrial partners. The project is addressing the huge wastage of plant crops that occurs during their processing, through the development of innovative and sustainable valorisation strategies that convert agri-food waste streams into next-generation feed additives to increase animal health and productivity.

In particular, you will focus on the extraction and analysis of phytochemicals from differently processed raw materials and encapsulated formulations, using a range of methodologies, to evaluate their potential for application as feed ingredients.

You will have an undergraduate or masters degree in Food Science and Nutrition, Food Science and Technology, or a closely allied discipline, and a strong background in experimental plant bioactive research with good analytical skills, e.g. chromatography, spectroscopy and bioactivity screening methods. You will be a good organiser, a team player, be highly motivated and able to communicate effectively with other members of the research team.

Requirements:

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or PGCE in IT, Computer Science, or a related subject.
• Recent and relevant teaching experience in a secondary school setting.
• Competence in planning and delivering engaging, comprehensive lessons in IT and Computer Science.
• An Enhanced DBS on the update service (or a willingness to apply for one).

Responsibilities:

• Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging lessons in IT and Computer Science to Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 students.
• Assess and evaluate student progress, providing constructive feedback and support to help each student reach their potential.
• Collaborate with colleagues to create an inclusive, supportive, and innovative learning environment.
• Encourage students to develop analytically and problem-solving skills that are essential in today's digital landscape.
