Sample Management Research Assistant

Evotec (US) Inc. has a Sample Management Research Assistant position open, located at the Branford, CT facility.  The purpose of this position is to provide laboratory processing of client orders, the majority of which will involve manual weighing and liquid handling of compounds. The candidate for this role will be expected to have further due diligence and increased understanding of workflows, SOPs, etc.  The position requires a highly motivated individual, able to work independently and as part of a team to ensure the successful fulfillment of orders.

The compounds may be potentially hazardous.  Prior to start, Evotec (US) Inc. will train the individual in lab safety.  Safety glasses, lab coats and gloves will be required while working.  Specific site training, automation, computers, and any other material in support of compound management activities will be provided.

Individuals may be required to use an air purifying respirator, at some future date.  If implemented, individuals will need to pass a health respirator physical and remove any interfering facial hair.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Tare weighing of vials and other containers and barcoding of consumables.
• May require use of liquid handling instrumentation for the processing of compounds.
• Powder weighing of compounds using a balance and fume hood.
• Position may require long periods of repetitive work.
• Data handling, inventory tracking, accurate record keeping and following established Standard Operating Procedures for assigned tasks.
• Ensure quality control and safety standards adherence.

Required Qualifications: 

• Some chemical laboratory experience preferred.
• Use of balances, fume hoods, and basic chemical handling procedures
• Good oral and written communications
• Follow oral and written protocols and instructions from senior lab staff.
• Must adhere to laboratory safety standards.

Education and experience:

BS or equivalent with scientific discipline and 1-2 years’ experience preferred.

A Senior Principal Scientist in Analytical Research and Development plays an important role during all phases of pharmaceutical development. The qualified candidate will take an active role by leading the analytical development strategies and performing and directing lab work for new drug candidates. The candidate will work with cross-functional development teams and apply a variety of analytical methodologies to support physical and chemical characterization of drug substances and products. The candidate should be proficient with a breadth of analytical methodologies (e.g. chromatography, mass spectrometry, dissolution, spectroscopy, and NMR), with expertise in one or more techniques.  The candidate should also be proficient with a wide variety of software and information systems and have a demonstrated ability to learn new techniques and solve complex analytical problems. Branford, CT. facility, the Research Assistant will provide support in the receipt and registration of external compound samples to fulfill client orders.  In this hands-on, laboratory-based life science role, the successful candidate must be a competent, self-directed individual who employs a high level of autonomy. The successful candidate must be comfortable learning about and using lab instruments/software. The position provides an excellent opportunity to support promising drug discovery companies while developing laboratory skills in a cutting-edge biotechnology facility.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Receive and register all compound samples from internal and external sources to be added to the compound inventory, including packaging/unpackaging, labelling, sorting, and proper storage/fulfillment.
• Deploy automated processes, including automated weighers, as part of the compound registration process.
• Responsible for meeting internal timelines for compound registration into the Titian Mosaic software.
• Address issues and discrepancies related to all aspects of data integrity, compound registration, shipments, etc. at the Branford site.
• Be able to communicate effectively between Laboratory Operations and the Project Management Office as necessary.
• Assist in shipping/receiving or other areas of the laboratory.

• Experience with compound registration and/or other compound management informatics platforms, Titian Mosaic experience preferred.

The Challenge:

• Interact with and assist Principal Investigator (PI) at the NSMRL in all aspects of human and non-human subject experimental planning, data collection, and data analysis.

• Planning, e.g., scientific protocol development and preparation and setup and testing of experimental equipment.

• Develop scientific protocols for executing required human research.

• Assist with audiology research using experimental apparatuses used to investigate hearing protection devices and communication systems.

• Execute setup, testing, and troubleshooting of experimental equipment.

• Execute all aspects of research subject recruiting and coordinate with subjects and other research personnel to ensure successful protocol execution.

• Communicate with audiologists and hearing conservation researchers outside NSMRL to maintain awareness of technology developments, developments in the field, and explore opportunities for collaboration, etc.

• Prepare and present reports, presentations, and other documents as directed.

• Adhere to and implement scientific review board and institutional board review procedures.

• Assist in the development and tracking of program budget and, when necessary, coordinate with acquisition personnel to ensure contracts are executed in a timely manner. Prepare travel and purchase requests with necessary support documentation.

• Provide other research-related support as needed

• We are seeking an experienced pharmacologist and automation specialist to build and lead the HTS laboratory to support small molecule drug discovery. The laboratory head will also be responsible for automation and data management and lifecycle strategies within PPG.

• As the HTS portfolio lead, you will be responsible for management, communication, and execution of the HTS portfolio as well as and the strategic vision for HTS moving forward. This will include extracting value from HTS data beyond immediate project needs.   
• This laboratory leader will maintain a ‘cutting edge’ awareness of technical developments and scientific advancements in the field and apply these innovatively to advance internal capabilities. The role includes opportunities to publish when appropriate.
• This HTS lead will lead interdisciplinary team(s) of biologists, medicinal chemists, and protein biochemists to effectively prosecute the HTS portfolio and actively interact with other groups in Discovery Sciences.
• As a laboratory supervisor, a commitment to coaching and guiding professional development is required.

Qualifications  

Must-Have  

• PhD in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, and/or Pharmacology with 10+ years post-degree experience, including industry experience
• Proven ability to build, lead, energize and develop a high-performing team of scientists.
• Demonstrated examples of strong scientific leadership, independent thought and creativity, and ability to integrally contribute to program strategies and execute plans.
• Experience successfully interacting with and meeting the needs of stakeholder groups is essential as well as having a customer focus.

Nice-to-Have  

• Previous experience in multiple target classes (e.g. GPCRs, transporters, kinases, ion channels, DUBs, RNA) in a drug discovery setting
• Experience with phenotypic screening and hit deconvolution
• Demonstrated ability to forge strong collaborative and inclusive relationships inside and outside organizational walls and across multiple cultures: academic, industrial, and CROs

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Sitting, standing, lifting, bending, and walking.  Ability to perform practical laboratory bench work and work on a computer (while standing or sitting).  Ability to perform mathematical calculations and interpret data.

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

• Travel to attend appropriate meetings and conferences.
• Compliance with laboratory safety practices.
