Based at the state-of-the-art Technology & Innovation Centre in Glasgow, the SPEER Deputy Director of Energy will be a high calibre versatile professional with a wide range of skills who can manage all aspects of SPEER strategic, operational and project delivery. You will work closely with the SPEER Executive Director and manage the day-to-day operational and project delivery of the wider SPEER team. Due to the integrated nature of the partnership, you will work closely with the SPEER Deputy Director (Engineering) to identify areas of synergy between the Engineering and Energy Strategies and develop joint initiatives. The Department of Chemical and Process Engineering (CPE) within the Faculty of Engineering is seeking to recruit a Research Associate to carry out theoretical modelling work to explore decarbonisation technologies including biomass valorisation, CO2 conversion, waste plastic recycling, etc. This position is one of the three PDRA positions to be recruited for one UKRI funded project with an overall aim at reshaping a fossil-free feedstock carbon supply to accelerate net-zero.

The position requires in-depth knowledge of large-scale computation, thermodynamic analysis and technical communication thus prior experience in Quantum Mechanics (QM) Density Functional Theory (DFT) modelling, thermodynamic analysis, mechanism and kinetics investigation, and a brief background of waste valorisation is required. The postholder will be responsible on computational modelling of the reaction mechanism and exploration of the thermodynamic and kinetics of the waste valorisation processes, evaluating the role of operating conditions and catalyst performance, predicting the yield of the key products based on the theoretical mechanism and kinetic results. The postholder will work closely with the principal investigator, other Research Associate, and the PhD students, that involved in this project.

As a Research Associate, under the general guidance of a research leader, you will develop research objectives, play a lead role in relation to a specific project/s or part of a broader project, conduct individual and/or collaborative research, contribute to the development of new research methods, and contribute to the securing of funds for research. You will write up research work for publication, individually or in collaboration with colleagues, and disseminate the results via peer reviewed journal publications and presentation at conferences. You will join external networks to share information and ideas, inform the development of research objectives. You will collaborate with colleagues to ensure that research advances and you will collaborate with colleagues on the development of knowledge exchange activities by, for example, participating in initiatives which establish research links with industry and influence public policy and the professions. You will co-supervise student projects, provide advice to students and contribute to teaching as required by, for example, running tutorials. You will contribute in a developing capacity to Department/School, Faculty and/or University administrative and management functions and committees and engage in continuous professional development.

To be considered for the role, you will be educated to a minimum of PhD level in an appropriate discipline, or have significant relevant experience in addition to a relevant degree. You will have sufficient breadth or depth of knowledge in computational modelling, thermodynamic analysis, reaction mechanism exploration, kinetics analysis and a developing ability to conduct individual research work, to disseminate results and to prepare research proposals. You will have an ability to plan and organise your own workload effectively and an ability to work within a team environment. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, engage and persuade, and to present complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences.

The role offers an exciting and varied opportunity to help support the strategic direction of Thales OME helping to support the future development of innovative electro-optic systems.

Thales OME undertakes R&T projects to; obtain up-to-date technical knowledge, assess the technical feasibility of potential solutions and to help de-risk new products. Our R&T activities span Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 1 to 6, involving; paper studies, laboratory studies, customer and internally funded projects, proof of principle concepts and prototype builds.

Thales OME is particularly interested in electro-optic sensors and imaging systems, optical system design, algorithms and machine learning applied to imaging systems and emerging technologies related to these that can influence our future products.

This role will be primarily based on-site at either Glasgow or Reading. The role involves domestic and international travel to other Thales sites, partners or customers.

Key responsibilities/tasks include:

• You will be working with the OME Technical Directorate, that has Chief Technologists across the entire OME product spectrum plus collaborating with the Chief Product Line Engineers, Product Line Design Authorities (PLDA). The role will be to look for funding opportunities to support the realisation of product line technology roadmaps.
• Liaise with Thales Research & Technology (R&T) teams across Thales, (Optronics and Missile electronics business, others) and ensure a good relationship with KTDs (Key Technology Domains).
• Explore business opportunities with the wider customer community (Government, Universities and other commercial businesses).
• Working with Sales Teams you will gain access to a wide range of key customers and be exposed to their thinking and requirements.
• Spot opportunities to win bids perhaps as part of a collaborative industry team.
• Be cognisant of the company processes and use them appropriately and efficiently.
• Represent the company on working groups and at conferences both internal and external to Thales.

About You:

• Strong technical background in research and innovation with 5 years of experience.
• Master’s degree in Physics/Electronics/Engineering or similar numerate discipline.
• Experience in the specification, design and development of Electro-Optic Sensors
• You will have prior relevant technical knowledge but be willing to adapt and learn about a wider variety of technologies that the business wants to develop.
• Good listening, verbal and written communication skills.
• Compiling quality presentation material and presenting clearly to customers and at conferences
• You will be a self-starter and have interest to explore existing and novel approaches to funding.
• Be a visionary seeing the big picture and identify the smaller opportunities to develop product.
• Willing to travel as and when necessary.

Desirable:

• PhD in subject related to; Electro-optics, Physics, Computer Sciences, Artificial Intelligence, Vision, Robotics, Simulation, Opto-Electronics, Data Analysis, Engineering or Synthetic Data generation
• Prior experience in Technical Business Development/Sales.
• Prior experience working with Government (e.g. Dstl and/or MoD), Universities and other Defence Industries.
