Senior Conservator

About Us
We are now recruiting for a Senior Conservator to join the Conservation & Collections Care team on a fixed term contract until December 2025. You will work 35 hours per week based at The National Collections Centre (NCC) in Wroughton, Swindon.
The NCC is a collections management facility housing a vast range of objects from microscope slides to railway carriages, other objects are stored in repurposed aircraft hangars, sustainable hempcrete constructed buildings and other facilities dispersed across the park.
About the role
Working with Science Museum Group policies and protocols, you will be involved in all aspects of planning and completing conservation treatments. You will be conserving objects in the collection and ensuring they are safe for handling and storage, in addition to providing recommendations on packing and transport options.
As Senior Conservator you will work alongside a second Senior Conservator and Project Leads to deliver a programme of works to improve storage and access across NCC. You will line manage two Conservators, ensuring your team is working safely themselves and when working with others and that the collection is also kept safe throughout.
About you
Joining us you have a relevant conservation qualification or equivalent practical experience and knowledge. You will have good practical experience of 3D object remedial conservation treatment in addition to a good level of knowledge and practical application of current UK Health and Safety practice within the following areas: manual handling, collections hazard management, use of power tools, lifting and moving equipment, writing Risk and COSHH assessments.
You will have good planning and project management skills including an understanding of how to produce budgets and write specifications for work. Crucially, you will be able to work in a team delivering large projects and the skills and understanding required to manage and lead teams effectively.
