We are looking for an enthusiastic Research Associate to join Cardiff’s team to help deliver the HyNTS project.

This position is funded through a Strategic Innovation Funding collaboration on the HyNTS project. The aim of the project is to investigate the compression of hydrogen for use in energy networks. It will test repurposing of existing compression equipment to determine if it could be used for 100% hydrogen transmission. 

Project partners include Cardiff University, Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery, Northern Gas Networks, Southern Gas Networks, DNV Services UK, Premtech and Cullum Detuners. Under the beta phase, the project has been awarded £33.3 million ($42.8 million).

Periodic trips to the FutureGrid research facility are expected, and the candidate would need to engage in and review industrially led research activities.

The candidate would be expected to attend periodic events that take place around the UK, with meeting occurring nominally every month.

In this role, you will:
• Engage in and review industrially led research activities, including attendance at periodic events.
• Undertake experimental and simulation based research focussed on the application of hydrogen in gas turbines.
• Support the continued operation of GTRC research activities.
This post is full-time (35 hours per week), is fixed term for 27 months and is available immediately.

Salary: £39,347 - £44,263 per annum (Grade 6).

The majority of roles at Cardiff University are currently operating under ‘blended working’ arrangements, with staff having the flexibility to work partly from home and partly from the University campus depending on specific business requirements. Discussions around these arrangements can take place after the successful candidate has been appointed, however it is anticipated that the candidate will primarily work between Cardiff and GTRC. This position is funded through SIF collaboration with the HyNTS project. The Senior/Principal Process Development Engineer will be responsible for supporting process development and leading process optimization, scale-up and validation for modified-release, ophthalmic products from early pre-clinical development through clinical development, and commercial release. This position will be responsible for GMP facility maintenance, operations, systems qualification, and for supporting quality management systems. The Senior/Principal Process Development Engineer will also assist in the oversight of cGMP manufacturing of GMP clinical trial supplies and in supporting Analytical Development activities as needed. In addition, the role is responsible for drafting, reviewing and approving key quality management system documents and analysis for process improvement and failure reduction activities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

This position will be responsible for supporting the transition of drug product manufacturing processes from the R&D formulation development phase through process optimization and scale-up for technology transfer from Phase 1 through Commercial development; and for developing and managing GMP manufacturing facilities, associated equipment and utilities. This will include the manufacture of phase 1 and 2 clinical supplies including participating in and leading the production of supplies for clinical development.  This position will be responsible for evaluating and developing modern manufacturing techniques (ex., semi-automated and automated processes, etc.) to produce modified release ophthalmic implants. The position may support both aseptically manufactured and/or terminally sterilized products.

This position will work closely with the Formulation and Device Development, Quality Assurance, non-clinical development, Clinical, Regulatory, and Material Sciences/Analytical functions; and provide support for third-party manufacturing and testing services vendors.

The Senior/Principal Process Development Engineer will also write and review Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) documents, including development protocols and reports, Regulatory Submissions, and maintain compliance with cGMP standards as appropriate for pre-clinical and clinical development.

Accountabilities

• Responsible for the support of development, tech transfer, and qualification of manufacturing processes for sterile drug products used in non-clinical and clinical development.

Job Overview

Perform monitoring and site management work to ensure that sites are conducting the study(ies) and reporting study data as required by the study protocol, applicable regulations and guidelines, and sponsor requirements.

The Welsh Institute of Performance Science (WIPS) is a collaborative partnership between the Faculty of Life Sciences and Education at University of South Wales (USW) and Sport Wales Institute (SWI). WIPS was launched to promote, facilitate and conduct multidisciplinary research on behalf of SWI. Specifically, we work closely with theme lead staff at SWI in Athlete Development, Health and Wellbeing, and Athlete Environments, to answer high-performance questions. In doing so, WIPS aims to support the development and performance of athletes across Wales both in the short and long term. WIPS also strives to secure research funding from International Governing Bodies and European research funding councils to ensure a sustained approach to research.



USW are seeking a Research Fellow to support the general research activities of WIPS. The role is positioned to support research across all themes, with a specific focus on sport psychology and coaching science, and is aligned with the WIPS’ Research Steering Group (https://www.swansea.ac.uk/sports-science/astem/wips/areas-expertise/).



The successful applicant will be motivated, organised, and able to work both independently and as part of a wider team. The ability to work to deadlines, with excellent attention to detail, as well as good interpersonal and communication skills are essential. The successful candidate will have a good undergraduate (honours) and postgraduate research degree (e.g., PhD; ProfDoc) aligned to the disciplines (e.g., sport psychology, coaching, performance) associated with the role. Extensive and highly competent qualitative and quantitative research skills are essential, with extensive working knowledge of the design and analysis of larger projects.



The successful candidate will be expected to undertake a hybrid-model of working, which will include working remotely, at USW, and at Sport Wales Institute (Sofia Gardens, Cardiff) to facilitate the timely completion of research projects. They should also expect to travel to other locations to meet sport representatives as the need occurs and at times dictated by the nature of elite sport environments.

The Role

We are very excited to be offering an opportunity to four (4) postdoctoral researchers to join our research team. The team includes the co-applicants: Professor Ari Saranandom (Department of Biosciences), Professor Fuschia Sirois (Department of Psychology), Dr Ladan Cockshut (Assistant Professor (Research) and Co-I for Evaluation), Dr Beth Upex (Senior Technical Manager, Department of Archaeology) and Andrew Moss (Research Culture Manager, Research and Innovation Services), an external consultant and a Senior Project Manager. We are a cross-departmental and cross faculty team and will be based in a collaborative space.

Three (3) of these roles will be responsible for conducting ethnographic research into governance across selected university departments and research institutes and will co-design and deliver pilot projects aimed at improving governance structures. One (1) of the roles will work with Dr Ladan Cockshut (Co-I for evaluation) and focus on evaluation of the entire project across all of its strands of activity and interventions. These roles will be integral members of our research team, working with colleagues from a diverse range of departments and disciplines to deliver this ambitious project.

The successful applicants will be expected to:

• Carry out research and pilot projects (3 roles):
• Conduct ethnographic research, including interviews and participant observation, across selected academic departments and/or university research institutes
• Conduct literature reviews and examine documentation relating to research governance
• Use an action research approach to deliver co-designed research governance interventions
• Use a mixed methods approach to collect and analyse data, including ethnographic research in committees, creating and deploying surveys via Qualtrics and analysing quantitative data using SPSS
• Conduct evaluation (1 role):
• Contribute to the design and implementation of the evaluation strategy for all strands of this project
• Help to conduct a mixed methods evaluation of all strands of the project to ascertain its impact and the effectiveness of the project's interventions
• Attend, observe, and document Shadow Boards and any other meetings and activities of relevance to the project.

All roles will be expected to:

• Participate in regular meetings of the research team
• Produce and deliver periodic updates for the Project Oversight Group (POG)
• Publish high quality outputs, including project reports, papers for submission to peer reviewed journals and papers for presentation at conferences and workshops
• Pursue opportunities for professional and career development, including training opportunities and conference attendance.

The individual in this position will receive guidance and oversight from Dr Sravan Muguda Viswanath. They will also engage in collaborative efforts with fellow academics involved in the project. This role involves active participation and interaction with colleagues and both within and outside the Department. The individual taking up this position will become a part of the Geotechnical and Environmental Engineering Research (GEER) Node, which is housed within the Department of Engineering. The GEER node is dedicated to conducting specialized research focused on understanding the characteristics of unsaturated soils, earthen construction materials and bio-stabilised soils. The individual is also expected to spend a few months on secondment at the Center for Bio-mediated & Bio-inspired Geotechnics at Arizona State University, United States of America under the guidance of Dr Emmanuel Salifu.

The Role

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Geotechnical Engineering with a particular emphasis on bio-stabilisation. The research project aims to investigate the synergy between fungi and biopolymer soil stabilisation techniques and lay scientifically validated recommendations for future in-situ applications. The successful applicant will be expected to conduct controlled tests to optimise the fungi-biopolymer combinations, conduct advanced geotechnical laboratory tests on fungi-biopolymer amended soils in relation to their unsaturated mechanical, hydraulic and durability properties, and to collaborate with researchers in the development of constitutive and numerical models. The PDRA is expected to prepare high-quality research articles and present their work to project partners and researchers at international conferences.
