Durham Law School and the Department for Computer Science seek to appoint an Assistant Professor in Law and Computer Science (Research & Education) as part of a strategic investment in Durham's Centre for Sustainable Development Law and Policy: Just Transitions to a Net Zero World (JusTN0W). The ambitious and interdisciplinary initiative JusTN0W is funded by a £5 million investment that will see seven academic staff appointed to lead Durham's commitment to a better and fairer world in the face of climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental degradation. We are seeking to appoint a Grade 6 Research Assistant for an externally-funded project examining the use of baby carriers and slings in the UK. The role will involve designing and conducting a systematic review of research evidence, designing and conducting online surveys with families and practitioners, critically evaluating existing guidance and making recommendations. This is a 1-year researcher role on a project funded by the National Institute of Health Research's School for Public Health Research. We are seeking either a Grade 7 PhD holder,or Grade 6 graduate to fill this role. The project, COAST (Evaluating COastal rural communities' Active and Sustainable Travel), uses an ethnographic approach to explore responses to active and sustainable travel interventions in rural and coastal County Durham and Cornwall. Methods used are likely to include geonarratives, go-along interviews and photo-elicitation interviews. The postholder will be based at Durham and will conduct intensive fieldwork in the east of County Durham, working closely with a researcher at the University of Exeter who will conduct fieldwork in Cornwall. Senior Research Technician

The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and experienced technician to cover a period of maternity leave for 12 months, predominantly to support our Palaeoclimate, Image and Geochemistry research laboratories.

You will be responsible for:
the operational management of these research lab areas- carrying out lab inductions, training staff and students in technical and clean lab procedures, maintaining stock levels, servicing, and operating analytical equipment; overseeing lab safety, assessing risk, and encouraging sustainable lab practices.
carrying out analytical work to support academic researchers, e.g. conducting palaeoclimate multi-proxy analysis using light microscopy (preparing ocean sediment samples for stable isotope and trace metal analysis), Coulter Counter (for grain size analysis) and maintaining data and archive records.
Experience in working in a research laboratory is essential.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the field of quantitative geomorphology who will work on cascading landslide and flood hazards in the Garhwal Himalaya, India. The research project "Dynamic Risks for Cascading Himalayan Hazards" is funded by NERC and the Indian Ministry of Earth Sciences and involves UK researchers at Edinburgh, Durham, Newcastle, Glasgow, Bristol, and York; and Indian researchers at IIT Kanpur, Doon, OP Jindal Global, Sikkim, NGRI, and NCESS. The project aims to co-produce, with stakeholders, the first quantitative understanding of the dynamic risk associated with landslide mechanisms that generate unstable sediment storage (or "sediment bombs") within mountain systems, the processes that trigger downstream sediment release in hyperconcentrated flows, and the impact that this has on subsequent flood inundation down the river network.

The successful applicant will be expected to quantify sediment flux to rivers from both shallow and deep landslides using remote sensing imagery, automated landslide detection algorithms, and empirical modelling. They will compare the locations and volumes of landslide sediment flux to sediment bombs mapped within the river network. They will be expected to use machine learning classification of fluvial systems to generate a time-series of sediment erosion and deposition from optical satellite imagery. These data will be an essential component of the wider project which aims to explore how landslide-derived sediment and sediment bomb accumulation and release modifies flood inundation and therefore dynamic risk for the Alaknanda catchment. The successful applicant will work closely with Dr. David Milledge at Newcastle University on landslide sediment flux quantification. They will also be expected to participate in wider team meetings and workshops which will be held both in the UK and in India.

Graduate Programme



This will be a 2-year programme providing you with valuable exposure and insight into Veolia services and strategic Veolia projects. You will be supporting and developing projects across the Total Waste Management portfolio, whilst developing an understanding of the role of the SCM and CM.



As part of the Graduate Development Programme, you will go through a structured development programme, undertaking leadership, management, soft skills and safety modules with your graduate cohort.



What will you be doing?



- Innovation and Development support

- IT development (Supporting integration of Customer Hub)

- Introducing Sustainability Reporting - Carbon Footprint/Electric Vehicles

- Develop an understanding of how Total Waste Management works across Customer sites

- Supporting projects to automate reporting

- Undertaking Duty of Care audits on 3rd Party sites

- Understanding the roles within Total Waste Management from Operative to Senior Contract Manager



What are we looking for?



- Degree level qualification in Science or Environmental based (a minimum of 2:1 to be achieved by Sept 2024)

- IT Skills

- Presentation Skills

- Driving licence

- Working knowledge of Google systems (Desirable)

- Waste Management or environmental knowledge (Desirable)

Job Title: Environmental Science Graduate

Salary: £29,000

Hours: 40 hours per week

Programme Duration: 2 years programme
