We are looking for a talented early career researcher in fluid dynamics and/or machine learning, with expertise in computational methods to work on the project “A new understanding of turbulence via a machine-learnt dynamical systems theory” (UKRI Frontier Research Guarantee for an ERC Starting Grant).

The Opportunity:

The dynamical systems view of turbulence, in which the flow “pinballs” between exact coherent states (ECS), is a promising way to unify our statistical understanding of turbulence with a mechanistic understanding of the complex self-sustaining processes that underpin it. Historically, this approach has been restricted to weakly turbulent flows due to the difficulty of identifying and converging ECS, and this project will seek to use advances in machine learning and automatic differentiation to overcome these barriers.

A core part of this project is the development and interpretation of state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) models to model and predict high Reynolds number fluid flows. This will be the focus of this particular postdoc, where the post-holder will work on a combination of: (1) low order models for high-dimensional flows, e.g. generated via self-supervised learning, to parameterise the inertial manifold; (2) super-resolution/data-assimilation strategies incorporating the flow solver in the loss; (3) the application of interpretability techniques to attempt to reverse-engineer large ML models to extract latent learned physical concepts. The latter area is developing rapidly in the context of large language models but has not been explored in detail for physical problems.

There are significant computational resources set aside specifically for the post-holder, along with PI, to train large models (access to a dedicated GPU cluster with ~160 A100/H100 cards). There is scope for a strong candidate to shape the research direction.

Based in the West of Edinburgh, The Royal High School is one of the oldest schools in Scotland. It has a strong sense of history, but prides itself on being very much a school of the 21st Century. The current teaching staff complement is 88 FTE with 20 FTE staff other than teachers, including a team of Pupil Support Assistants, who support the integration of pupils. The Centre for Population Health Sciences at the Usher Institute, within The University of Edinburgh, is looking for a Research Assistant to work on a range of high impact and innovative research projects. The main project this post will support is an MRC PHIND (Medical Research Council, Public Health Intervention Development Study) study to prevent vaping in young people. In addition to this, the post holder will support other projects which are part of the research team’s portfolio. Currently this includes: a process evaluation of a paracetamol overdose study; prevention of gambling harm in secondary schools; and a feasibility study to support people in recovery from problematic drug or alcohol use to cut down or stop smoking.

The Opportunity:

This is a fantastic opportunity for a motivated and pro-active individual to gain research, project management, and topic expertise in applied public health research. Working with a highly experienced team of academics and third sector colleagues, the successful candidate will gain applied experience in complex health behaviour change intervention design and evaluation, particularly process evaluation. The successful candidate will require research skills in conducting and analysing qualitative or quantitative research and report writing. In addition to this, they will also have strong organisational skills to set up and co-ordinate team members to assist with fieldwork. Research Project: The successful candidate will engage in an innovative research project tailored towards digital health solutions in cancer care. We are looking to hire a highly motivated Research Fellow in Food Systems Thinking (Analytical Support), with excellent analytical, organisational and interpersonal skills, to work on our new Wellcome Trust Living Good Food Nation Lab project (https://wellcome.org/grant-funding/people-and-projects/grants-awarded/building-health-centred-net-zero-aligned-food).

This project is closely linked to exciting new Scottish legislation, the Good Food Nation (Scotland) Act, and aims to support its ongoing implementation. Led by University of Edinburgh Business School, our transdisciplinary team brings together academic, governmental, public sector and 3rd sector partners with expertise in nutrition and public health, environmental modelling, public food procurement, food policy and governance, anthropology, and sociology, of food, food and procurement law, social policy, behavioural change, and food systems transformation.
