The University of Edinburgh Research Office is looking for an enthusiastic and proactive Clinical Research Funding Specialist to join the Research Funding Team. The post holder will proactively facilitate, support and contribute to the submission and award of externally funded research activity involving human participants, through expert guidance on content and administrative structures, in or led by their portfolio of schools or funders.

The Opportunity:

The Edinburgh Research Office operates within the context of an ambitious and growing research agenda at the University of Edinburgh. As a Clinical Research Funding Specialist, you will proactively support budget preparation, review and submit applications and accept awards of externally funded research activity on behalf of the University. You will collaborate with researchers and local support staff to provide expert guidance on areas such as NHS protocols, funder requirements, contracting, eligibility and more for those proposals in or led by your portfolio of schools or funders.

You will be given opportunities to work agilely across all teams to support the delivery of business-critical objectives, for example: key projects, major deadlines, and other time sensitive initiatives. Whilst participating in one of these initiatives you will be under matrix management.

CMVM/Edinburgh Medical School/Deanery of Biomedical Sciences/Centre Discovery Brain Sciences/UK Dementia Research Institute

Contract Type - Fixed-Term 1 year with possible extension to 2 years

Full-time - 35 hours per week

We are looking for a postdoctoral Research Fellow to study mechanisms of astrocyte ingestion of synapses and the role this plays in synaptic degeneration in Alzheimer’s disease. The fellow will be based in the UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) at the University of Edinburgh, working in a project funded by a UK DRI industry collaborator which is led by Prof Tara Spires-Jones and Dr Claire Durrant.

The Opportunity:

This is an excellent opportunity to be a part of the UK DRI, which leads the UK’s dementia research effort to deliver a step-change in the scientific understanding of dementias (for more information, see https://ukdri.ac.uk/about-us ). The successful candidate will conduct original research, produce material for publication and dissemination, and work as a member of a research team including training students in research techniques. Note, this advert cover 2 complementary posts with overlapping skillset and candidates will be considered for both positions.

Your skills and attributes for success:

PhD or other higher level degree (MD/PhD, etc) earned or expected in a relevant discipline (neuroscience, biology, etc)
Expertise in relevant experimental approaches and models, analytical techniques and methods.
Experience with cell/tissue culture and sterile technique, specifically culturing astrocytes OR organotypic slice cultures, manipulating gene expression in cell culture, and performing phagocytosis assays highly desirable
Ability to communicate complex information clearly, orally and in writing.

The Simons Initiative for the Developing Brain located in the Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences wishes to recruit an enthusiastic, independent Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join their research group working on therapy strategies for brain disorders.

The Opportunity:

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to contribute to the development of a programme of high quality research using behavioural assessment coupled with tracking of complex behaviours and vocalisations in rat models of ASD/ID. The successful applicant will need to conduct original research in this area, contribute to the planning and implementation of experiments to assess the core goals and produce high quality material for publication and dissemination

Your skills and attributes for success:

Appropriate degree, with relevant post-graduate research experience. Normally a PhD (or PhD near completion) in Neuroscience or equivalent professional qualification and/or experience.
Expertise in assessing social play behaviour in rats.
Experience with designing and implementing unintrusive experimental approaches to behavioural assessment in rat models of ASD/ID and analysing behavioural data generated using these approaches.
Experience using an ethological approach to phenotype rat behaviour and experience with or knowledge of empirical behaviour testing in rodents.
Applicants must hold or be willing to obtain a Home Office ASPeL Licence (formerly PIL)
