Senior Design Manager (Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Lancastershire and Cumbria)
Due to our expansion, we are very pleased to offer an exciting full-time opportunity for a Senior Design Manager to join on our new United Utilities Enterprise Partnership in the North West, UK.

What you will be doing
- Lead on review of requirements at tender stage and allocate resources as appropriate during tender and upon successful award
- Produce design briefs for temporary and permanent works
- Review submissions as directed for quality and sufficiency
- Ensure conformance to the Murphy Design Management procedure
- Lead design matters on small/medium/large/mega sized project/s as directed, allocating design tasks to individuals/companies as required and maintain associated RACI
- Manage design managers/design co-ordinators on the projects, carry out staff appraisals when required and identify appropriate development activities.
- Attend team meetings as required and produce minutes when requested. Chair design related meetings
- Attend site as required to liaise with Site Managers / Engineers and ensure appropriate consideration of constructability and permanent works
- Ensure that that Aconex (or client approved alternative CDE system) is kept up to date by the Document Controller and correct drawing revisions are maintained and issued to sites
- Monitor, track, and report on Design progress, RFIs and Design NCRs
- Monitor, co-ordinate, and manage the design by consultants, MAE, suppliers, interface contractors, and outsourced designers as appropriate
- Ensure compliance with Standards and Client requirements, and assist in monitoring to ensure working to agreed design requirements
- Maintain good and professional relationships with the Client, Consultants, Sub-Contractors, Suppliers, Statutory Authorities and the internal team
- Ensure an understanding of, and an influence on the contracts Design Consultants are working under including their fees, schedule of services, programme, and liabilities and warranties
- Review and comment/accept the payment applications from consultants and pass to the contract surveyor for processing and payment
- Ensure risks and opportunities are identified at Work Winning stage and risks eliminated where possible
Who we’re looking for
- MEng or BEng degree, HNC/HND
- Chartered Engineer in relevant discipline
- CDP training, CDM training, CSCS Card
- Significant Design Management experience
- Digitally competent and familiar with BIM, CDEs and Document management systems
- Experience discharging Principal Designer duties
- Design management training/qualification
- Experience managing teams against BIM requirements
About the ProjectThe investment for 2025-2030 is United Utilities biggest ever environmental programme to deliver cleaner rivers and more reliable water supplies. Delivering circa £3bn of major infrastructure and non-infrastructure programmes, the work will include upgrades to wastewater treatment works and reducing spills from storm overflows.
