It is based at the Christie site in the departmentof Medical Oncology. This position is suitable for individuals who wish to gain specialist training andexperience in the care of patients with melanoma, and further training in early phase clinical trials.The Melanoma Team is a multi-disciplinary team of surgeons, oncologists and research staff. Thereare 4 plastic surgeons, 2 clinical oncologists, 4 medical oncologists and a large clinical research team.The oncology team covers a population of > 3.5 million and sees approximately 2250 new patients ayear with high risk primary or advanced disease. The team is a major contributor to clinical researchat a national and international level. We work closely with colleagues in the CRUK ManchesterInstitute, one of 3 CRUK Super Centres in the UK, and with colleagues at the University ofManchester (, Dr Adam Hurlstone). Manchester Cancer Research Centre has prioritised melanomaas one of six areas in which it will be internationally leading in research.The post will offer experience in cutting edge research in personalised medicine andimmunotherapy, Early Phase trials methodology and conduct, and experience in managing complexcases in an academic tertiary care centre with an international reputation. In addition, there areongoing projects inn toxicity management, late effects and on the use of big data and interrogationof national data-sets. It is expected the successful applicant will publish a number of papers as aresult of their attachment, and there will be an opportunity to develop novel research projects. Support senior colleagues in raising awareness of the role of the clinical research nurse as an integral part of the healthcare system. Maintain awareness of current advances in cancer treatments, research and nursing practice thereby maintaining the highest standard of care for patients with cancer and implementing evidence-based care by continuing professional development. Participation in trust-wide education programmes and study days. Obtain clinical supervision as appropriate. To keep up to date with departmental, Trust, UK and EU developments for the management of clinical research ensuring timely, effective implementation of changes. Attendance at team and clinical research nurse meetings. Staff Management and Development Support the development of specialist study days within own research team. Assist in the provision of specialist education and training in relation to clinical trials to all key stakeholders including student nurses. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Planning and Organisation Contribute to the strategic planning of observational and supportive care team projects and developments, identifying interdependencies across projects/functions, potential impacts on wider organisation, resource requirements and building in contingency and advising on necessary adjustments. Contribute to the development of performance and governance strategies and support the development and implementation of improvement programmes, in accordance with local and Divisional priorities Contribute to development and achievement of short-, medium- and long-term business plans and objectives Organise and schedule research meetings, ensuring appropriate accommodation, attendance and distribution of papers, and that an agenda is agreed Coordinate, manage and monitor work flow within the observational and supportive care team in collaboration with RM/clinical leads Policy and Service Development Contribute to the review of existing services to promote development of the observational and supportive care team services Where appropriate develop operational procedures in collaboration with the quality assurance leads Support the directorate operational leads in service development plans to align with national and local strategic priorities Performance Management Contribute to the development and maintenance of the infrastructure to measure and monitor performance within the observational and supportive care team to ensure that performance is in line with key performance indicators Optimise working practices to maintain and continuously improve efficiencies within the observational and supportive care team in collaboration with key stakeholders Participate in the monitoring of compliance with all relevant standards Business Planning and Financial Management Support the development and production of business plans for services/projects as required Analyse and interpret complex data in order to deliver well-presented information Support clinical leads and business planning to ensure targets are met to maximise income. Support the use of service line reporting to inform financial management Liaise with relevant stakeholders in the development of grant applications Management and Leadership Direct line management responsibility for non-clinical staff within the observational and supportive care team including administrative workload allocation Provide leadership within the observational and supportive care team and act as a role model and resource for all team members Responsible for recruitment, retention, disciplinary and grievance, and all staffing management issues in accordance with relevant Trust policies Contribute to the delivery of training programmes Work collaboratively to identify and meet the learning needs of observational and supportive care team members Maintain own and professional development and identify learning needs and opportunities Information Management Working collaboratively to ensure that all relevant internal and external stakeholders are provided with high-quality, timely, well-presented and relevant data reports supporting stakeholders in understanding operational efficiency, performance against national and local targets, activity and financial performance, and service size, configuration and potential for growth. Establish working practices to ensure data is accurately collated and maintained, including externally facing information e.g., web pages Ensure research outputs are communicated appropriately Communication Communicate complex research information in written and oral format to internal and external parties Work, liaise and communicate with colleagues across the Trust, including service support areas to improve the delivery and quality of research and research services Where appropriate attend observational and supportive care team meetings to present information. Represent the observational and supportive care team projects at national conferences and workshops, leading on presentations as required. Work collaboratively within all teams in the Division of Research to maintain and enhance partnerships withpharmaceutical companies, other NHS sites and academia.
