RPS is looking for an Associate Director to join our Built Heritage Team. This is a rare opportunity for a consultant to take on and develop an existing client base. We are looking to recruit an Associate Director. but would also consider appointing at Director level for the right candidate. The position will be nominally based in our London office but, following our adoption of agile working practices we will consider candidates based across the country (who could instead work from our Newark, Gloucester, Abingdon or Edinburgh offices). The successful candidate is likely to need to attend the office at least one day per week.

You will be part of an experienced heritage team working on many of the biggest and most complicated heritage projects in the country. We offer an unrivalled range of project experience, working with English Heritage and Historic Royal Palaces, major developers and regeneration leaders, and individual property owners. We offer the opportunity to work as part of major interdisciplinary teams and innovating architects to provide outstanding new developments.

What you will be doing

· Preparation of Heritage Statements, Environmental Statements and Listed Building Consent applications

· Line management and mentoring of junior staff

· Business development

· Liaison with clients, local planning authorities and relevant stakeholders

· Expert Witness work, potentially including attendance at Public Inquiries

· Financial management of projects, to ensure they advance on time and to budget

Who we are looking for

We are looking to recruit Built Heritage experts with a pragmatic approach to the historic environment, leading our clients to find solutions to heritage constraints. You should be technically experienced and positive motivated to engage with relevant stakeholders to help play a part in delivery of the 1.5million homes promised this parliament together with much needed distribution and infrastructure. Our ideal candidate will have a proven track record of providing heritage advice on major projects; experience of providing expert witness and have Associate or Full Membership of the IHBC. You must hold a relevant degree in the conservation of historic buildings and places and a strong knowledge of the planning system. This includes solar, offshore wind, international interconnector and energy storage projects. We are the EIA lead for the Gatwick Airport Northern Runway Project, Morgan and Mona Offshore Wind Projects, Morgan and Morecambe Transmission Assets, TWP, XLinks interconnector and a large portfolio of energy storage and solar projects.

What you’ll be doing

With experience within this sector, you’ll already be familiar with what we’re looking for. You’ll have the opportunity to work on and manage a range of EIA projects, including large scale renewable DCO projects. You will be able to lead a multidisciplinary EIA project team and provide advice to the client, based on your experience on other projects.

You’ll be working within a multi-disciplinary environment with the opportunity to be part of a highly regarded team.

A typical week could include:

· Project management role for large DCO projects or for several smaller TCPA EIA projects

· Management of EIA team, including briefings of authors and lead for ensuring chapters are compliant and maintaining high quality of deliverables

· Working as a primary point of client contact on some of the leading EIA projects in the UK

· Advising on legislative requirements, good practice, budget and programme.

· Management of EIA consultation, requirements including coordination of Expert Working Groups

· Sign off of ES documents in preparation for client or legal review

· Opportunities for line management and mentoring of team members

· Opportunities to work on and develop digital EIA deliverables.

· Preparation of bid/tender documents with our bid team, as required

Who we’re looking for

You’ll have excellent experience of managing EIA projects, ideally including DCO and renewable infrastructure projects. Experience in the requirements for developing and consenting offshore wind, onshore cable routes, substations, solar farms would be an advantage.

Your report writing and review skills will reflect our high standards and you will be able to work collaboratively and have the ability to work with clients legal teams and other consultancies. A good eye for detail is essential as are strong problem-solving skills, helping to address client concerns and ‘make complex easy’. We’d like you to have:

· Experience of managing large EIA projects (essential).

· Experience working on large DCO projects, ideally including renewable projects (desirable).

· Experience in managing the client-EIA team interface and ensuring our clients’ high standards are met (essential).

· Detailed knowledge of the EIA Regulations and Planning Act and the requirements to deliver a compliant submission (essential).

· An eye for detail (essential).

· Willingness to travel for client or stakeholder meetings.

· Previous digital EIA experience or relevant skills to help in leading out digital EIA offering (desirable).

· A first degree in a relevant environmental subject and ideally an MSc in a relevant topic e.g. Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Management or similar

There will be some travel so a full UK driving license is required.

Who are looking for?

· A highly experienced and knowledgeable practitioner who has experience in large energy and infrastructure projects, including those requiring Environmental Impact Assessment, and those relating to Developments of National Significance and Development Control Orders

· Full membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute and experience of delivering consultancy to a range of customers

· Have an established market reputation with a demonstrable record of winning sustainable and commercially viable projects

· Good financial and project management experience is essential

· Great influencing and communication techniques that enable you to build, maintain and consolidate strong working relationships with colleagues, customers and external bodies
