Duty Locations:
Klamath Inventory and Monitoring Network: Ashland, OR (GS-5 only) No government housing available, You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 15 nights per month, Regular Drivers License required.
Sequoia and Kings Canyon NP: Sequoia and Kings Canyon, CA Government housing may be available, You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 15 nights per month, Regular Drivers License required.
Mount Rainier NP: Longmire, Ashford and Packwood, WA (GS-05 only) Government housing may be available, You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 22 nights per month, Drivers License may be required.
North Cascades NP: Marblemount, WA (GS-5 only) Government housing may be available, You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 22 nights per month, Drivers license, may be required.
Olympic NP: Port Angeles WA (GS-05 Only) Government housing may be available, You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 4 nights per month, Regular Drivers License required.
Yosemite NP: Yosemite, CA Government housing may be available, You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 15 nights per month, Drivers License may be required.
At the GS-04 level: You serve as a crew member on invasive plant control and ecological restoration projects in the front country or wilderness areas. Duties include:
- Assisting in the implementation and monitoring of restoration, re-vegetation, and long-term monitoring projects for front country and wilderness restoration programs.
- Identifying vascular plants to species level using dichotomous keys.
- Assisting with leading volunteers.
- Assisting with photo documentation of projects.
- Using a variety of computer programs including Microsoft Office software.
- Assisting in presenting educational programs to staff, volunteers and the public.
- Plant and tend native plants. Includes watering plants and collecting and distributing mulch.
- Collect and distribute native plant seed.
At the GS-05 level: You serve as a crew member on invasive plant control and ecological restoration projects in the front country or wilderness areas. Duties include:
- Assisting in the implementation and monitoring of restoration, re-vegetation, and long-term monitoring projects for front country and wilderness restoration programs.
- Using GPS to map vegetation and other features.
- Identifying vascular plants to species level using dichotomous keys.
- Leading volunteers.
- Photo documentation of projects.
- Using a variety of computer programs including Geographic Information System (GIS) software to compile, and report data and other resource management information.
- Compiling and presenting educational programs to staff, volunteers and the public.
- Plant and tend native plants. Includes watering plants and collecting and distributing mulch.
- Collect and distribute native plant seed.
OLYM NP only: Nursery work includes long hours standing and walking, and performing repetitive tasks related to plant propagation.
SEKI NP only: These positions involve
forest management / monitoring in both front country and backcountry settings. Duties include tree hazard surveillance and forest pest management. Specific tasks include identification/evaluation of tree defects, tree measurements (i.e., dbh and height), record-keeping, mapping, and data entry into data-logger and/or computer.
MORA NP only: Train and Lead field crews in establishing and measuring whitebark pine monitoring plots in backcountry locations.
Klamath I&M Network only: These positions are for crew members on our vegetation community monitoring and invasive species monitoring protocols. Crews work in remote, backcountry locations collecting long-term vegetation monitoring data.
The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is
April-May, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty:
April 2025. Poor air quality afflicts Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, especially during summer months - generally May to October. High ozone levels may be the most harmful pollutant here. In summer months, concentrations often exceed the federal ozone health standards. For more information:
