A Wildland Firefighter (GS-03) performs assignments as an entry level wildland firefighter crew member in developing a working knowledge of fire suppression and fuels management techniques, practices, and terminology; may assist in more specialized assignments such as backfire and burnout, mobile and stationary engine attack.

A Wildland Firefighter (GS-04) is a trained wildland firefighter. May be assigned to carry out specialized assignments such as tree falling, backfire, and burnout operations; utilizes a variety of specialized tools, equipment and techniques while actively managing wildfires. May be required to operate light vehicles and 4X4s.

A Wildland Firefighter (GS-05) is a trained and experienced wildland firefighter performing all aspects of wildland and prescribed fire operations including preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding and mop-up. Gathers and considers information on weather data, topography, fuel types and fire behavior in responding to wildland fire incidents. May be required to operate light vehicles and 4X4s.

• Communicates with the public regarding safety, fire prevention, amenities available, and proper and authorized uses of recreational facilities.
• Prepares and presents a variety of formal and informal interpretive programs to include but not limited to, orientation talks, environmental education programs, conducted walks, demonstrations, and campfire programs.
• Plans and preforms day-to-day operations/maintenance of a recreation area or site that provides such facilities as camping, water sports, picnic areas, trails and/or other recreational opportunities.
• Oversees fee collection activities, maintaining records on and accounting for funds, and submitting deposits, reviewing visitor use patterns and their effect on resources.
• Patrols and inspects facilities and trails ensuring compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to parking, campfires, noise level, sanitation, and safety.
• Handles conflicts or violations, bringing them to the attention of visitors and, if appropriate, issues notices of violations.

• Selection at the GS-9 level, the incumbent will perform the duties of the position, with a reduced level of responsibility and/or difficulty, while receiving on-the-job trainee assignments or other appropriate training.
• Works with the Lead Wildlife Biologist in the State Office on issues with local interest groups, Tribal Councils, and other federal agencies on the application of biological decisions, habitat conservation, and laws and regulations.
• Manage and perform professional, research or scientific work that involves conserving, protecting and administering wildlife species.
• Oversight of program for the management of the surrounding ecology, behavior and conservation of habitat of wild animals.
• Serves as the point of contact for input to the wildlife portion of the field/district’s annual work plan.
• Coordinating wildlife management programs with other natural resources activities, such as land use planning, forest and range management programs.

• Provide supervision to the procurement staff; establish work priorities, develop performance standards; and evaluate overall efficiency of the Acquisition Section to ensure effective and efficient operations.

• Serve as contracting officer for contracts and intergovernmental orders greater than $250,000.
• Provide guidance to technical and administrative personnel on procurement planning: determining appropriate procurement method, contract preparation, development, award, administration, and termination.
• Research proposed legislation and current law, regulations directives, other issuances, and Bureau initiatives that may impact acquisition programs.
• Provide technical guidance on procurement activities and/or contracting actions to program managers, management, and procurement and contracting personnel.
• Review policy for proposed acquisitions pre-award and post-award actions at various phases of the acquisition process to ensure compliance with laws regulations and policies.
• Participate in internal control review; analyze activities and information of the office being reviewed; prepare reports of observations; and make recommendations for corrective action.
• Analyze and evaluate the diverse procurement matters; and develop and recommend contracting policies, procedures, guidance, and control measures for those contracting activities.
• Provide technical guidance, advice, and assistance to the subordinate Contracting Officers in the interpretation of policies and regulations and resolution of complex contract problems.
