Based at the state-of-the-art Technology & Innovation Centre in Glasgow, the SPEER Deputy Director of Energy will be a high calibre versatile professional with a wide range of skills who can manage all aspects of SPEER strategic, operational and project delivery. The Department of Chemical and Process Engineering (CPE) within the Faculty of Engineering is seeking to recruit a Research Associate to carry out theoretical modelling work to explore decarbonisation technologies including biomass valorisation, CO2 conversion, waste plastic recycling, etc. This position is one of the three PDRA positions to be recruited for one UKRI funded project with an overall aim at reshaping a fossil-free feedstock carbon supply to accelerate net-zero.

The position requires in-depth knowledge of large-scale computation, thermodynamic analysis and technical communication thus prior experience in Quantum Mechanics (QM) Density Functional Theory (DFT) modelling, thermodynamic analysis, mechanism and kinetics investigation, and a brief background of waste valorisation is required. The postholder will be responsible on computational modelling of the reaction mechanism and exploration of the thermodynamic and kinetics of the waste valorisation processes, evaluating the role of operating conditions and catalyst performance, predicting the yield of the key products based on the theoretical mechanism and kinetic results. The postholder will work closely with the principal investigator, other Research Associate, and the PhD students, that involved in this project.

As a Research Associate, under the general guidance of a research leader, you will develop research objectives, play a lead role in relation to a specific project/s or part of a broader project, conduct individual and/or collaborative research, contribute to the development of new research methods, and contribute to the securing of funds for research. You will write up research work for publication, individually or in collaboration with colleagues, and disseminate the results via peer reviewed journal publications and presentation at conferences. You will join external networks to share information and ideas, inform the development of research objectives. You will collaborate with colleagues to ensure that research advances and you will collaborate with colleagues on the development of knowledge exchange activities by, for example, participating in initiatives which establish research links with industry and influence public policy and the professions. You will support compliance with research funder open access and data sharing requirements, and Research Excellence Framework exercise requirements. Furthermore, you will oversee administration of research outcomes reporting to funders to demonstrate compliance with these requirements.

- Coordinate the collection and input of clerical and other data necessary for clinical trial purposes, checking data is accurately completed/ recorded and ensure completion by other Trust staff, as required. - Liaise with clinical trials units, ensure data is reported to trials units in a timely manner. Assist research nurses/coordinators to answer data queries and ensure they are reported within set deadlines. - Ensure trial records are accurately maintained, including, but not limited to: records in nursing/ medical electronic and paper notes, case report forms, trial site files. - Responsible in collaboration with the designated research nurse/ co-ordinator for setting up and maintain spreadsheets/databases on patient recruitment into clinical studies. Report on data collection/ patient recruitment as required. - Responsible in collaboration with the designated research nurse/ co-ordinator for organising investigations, assessments and clinic appointments for patients in accordance with trial protocols. - Be part of the staff rota for administering and facilitating research clinics. Be a direct contact for patients during these clinics, act as a receptionist and deal sensitively and confidentially with any patient enquiries. - Maintain clinical studies information on EDGE (Clinical Trials IT system) - Assist with invoicing of patient expenses. - Ensure timely delivery of samples to laboratories within GHNHSFT. These may be collected in specific research clinics or from routine outpatient clinics or surgical theatres. - Ensure trial protocols are followed and that trials are conducted in accordance to research legislation including Good Clinical Practice. - Understand and follow GHNHSFT Research SOPs. - Report any protocol violations or issues of concern relating to patients and/or staff. - Lead on data collection for an agreed number of specific clinical trials. - Assist with close-out of studies and preparation for archiving of studies - Identify efficient methods for data collection across the sites where patients will receive their care. - Assist in achieving NIHR High Levels Objectives and GHNHSFT KPIs for research delivery. The post-holder will be expected to communicate with a variety of individuals across the Trust including consultants, supporting departments, and other healthcare professionals. Liaise with patients, commercial and non-commercial Clinical Trials Units and Clinical Study teams.

Feasibility and Study set-up: Contribute to the set-up of research studies within the wider research team. Liaise with the R&I Professional Services Team, Principal Investigators, support departments, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure a thorough feasibility process. Able to identify and plan strategies for recruiting patients into trials. Working with Principal Investigators to develop initiatives to increase patient involvement. Support: Assist in the selection and recruitment of participants in compliance with study inclusion / exclusion criteria. Receive informed consent and provide ongoing information, education and support to clinical trial patients (and their carers). Assist in achieving NIHR High Level Objectives and GHNHSFT Key Performance Indicators for patient recruitment, speed and quality of research Liaise with multi-disciplinary team members to teach and demonstrate procedures for the safe and smooth running of clinical trials and act as a training resource to other members of the clinical team and a contact point in matters concerning trial patients and trial protocols. Ability to line manage, train and develop junior members of the team, act as a role model. Act as a supervisor for students as applicable to professional registration. Study Delivery/Monitoring: Good knowledge of clinical trials, including, but not limited to: Research Governance Framework, Good Clinical Practice for Clinical Trials. Ensure the safety and wellbeing of clinical trial patients, including safe administration of treatments and drugs that are given within the context of a clinical trial, as applicable to professional registration and Trust POPAM policy. Reporting of serious adverse events to all relevant personnel, following the relevant Standard Operating Procedures. Assess patients as required by trial protocols and take appropriate and timely action for patients with treatment toxicities, where appropriate. Perform trial specific clinical observations and assessments as mandated by trial protocol. Venepuncture, test urine samples and administer treatments for which training has been given, as applicable to professional registration, R&I Standard Operating Procedures and Trust POPAM policy. To be responsible for requesting internal monitoring reports for locally sponsored/hosted studies and actioning as required. Responsible for actioning externally sponsored monitoring reports in a timely manner. Ensure trial protocols are followed and that trials are conducted according to the Research Governance Framework Procedures, R&I Standard Operating Procedures and Good Clinical Practice (ICH GCP). Maintain a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors. Comply with Trust policies and guidelines. Ensure trial records are accurately maintained, including, but not limited to: records in nursing/medical electronic and paper notes, case report forms and trial site files. Adhere to requirements to protect confidentiality. Maintain study records on EDGE (Clinical Trials IT system). Other Duties: Support the embedding of clinical research within our Trust. Contribute to strategies that inform Trust staff of current clinical trial activity/progress. Respond to change in line with the needs of service provision, working flexibly within the delivery team.
