Curriculum Organisation

We deliver the National Curriculum to all students at 11-16 to develop a broad and balanced diet of learning. At Key Stage 3 (Years 7 - 9) the school curriculum consists of core subjects: English, mathematics, science; and non-core subjects: modern foreign languages, design technology, ICT, history, geography, art, music, drama and physical education; PSHE (including sex education) and learn to learn.

At Key Stage 4 (Years 10 – 11) the school curriculum consists of compulsory subjects: English language and English literature, mathematics, science and physical education and a broad range of academic and vocational courses leading to external qualifications. In Key Stage 4 the students also take part in prep lessons that are used for focussed independent study. Mechanical Design Engineer required for an industry leading supplier of manufacturing machinery with a reputation of global excellence. This is a great opportunity to join a company with a worldwide presence who are truly committed to developing their staff. Within this role, you will be based at a brand-new, purpose-built facility.

This role would suit an experienced mechanical design engineer with experience designing special purpose machinery.

Working within a team of six, the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will take a lead role in the development of new products, using SolidWorks to create 3D designs of special purpose machinery. You will be involved in the design of tooling and coordinate with engineers of other disciplines (electrical, software etc.) to produce design solutions to meet user requirements.

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer Role:

· Lead mechanical design of special purpose machinery, including lead plate feeders and stackers, lead casting machines, robot loading and machining cells etc.

· Use SolidWorks to create 3D models and carry out prototyping and verification testing

· Ensure designs complies with specifications, safety regulations and CE compliance

· Selection of mechanical components

· Create 2D designs for manufacture

· Production of Customer Sign Off drawings for new orders

· Generate assembly drawings and BOMs

The Opportunity…

We are looking for a Nuclear Fuel Design Engineer to join our Fuel and Core Branch (F&CB) as part of the Nuclear Services Business.

The F&CB supports Hinkley Point C, Sizewell C, Sizewell B, and both operating and defueling Advanced Gas Reactors (AGRs). This involves providing safety substantiation and technical advice in the following areas:


- Design and manufacture of fuel, fuel components, and core components
- Assessment of the properties of different materials, individual components and entire fuel assembly structures in-reactor and during ex-reactor handling, storage and related processes.


As a member of the Nuclear Fuel Group, you will report to the Nuclear Fuel Group Leader and work closely with other Nuclear Services groups, EDF Licensee Groups, Power Stations and Fuel Suppliers on the aspects listed above.

- £71,779, and you’ll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Nuclear Generation Company Agreement as well as your existing salary, competence, experience, and qualifications.

What you’ll be doing…

You will work as part of a team to:


- Assess changes to fuel designs and manufacturing to ensure fuel components perform as desired in-reactor and during post irradiation handling. This can involve data at atomic level, right through to consideration of entire fuel assemblies.
- Interact with power station personnel to advise on and resolve issues involving irradiation, handling or storage of fuel, fuel components and core components.
- Write and verify safety cases to demonstrate the safety of the fuel, fuel components and core components.
- Review technical reports and engineering drawings submitted by suppliers for their acceptability to specification, quality and adequacy.
- Carry out calculations and also provide judgements to support all of the above.
- Interact with key stakeholders including the Fuel Vendors, Fuel Contract Managers, Office for Nuclear Regulation, the station Nuclear Safety Groups and Fuel Route Groups, and other senior company stakeholders.
- Keep up to date with industry research and operational experience in the fuel design discipline.
- Drive your own training and development, within our structured training arrangements.
- Attend, chair and/or act as secretary for various technical meetings and working groups.

The focus will be water reactors, with some AGR work likely.


Who you are…

Your background should include the following:


- Qualification or relevant experience in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Applied Physics, or a complementary technical discipline.
- A passion for understanding the detailed behaviour of high integrity engineered components operating in adverse environments.

This opportunity would suit also suit a graduate (or someone with equivalent academic qualifications and experience) as an established and systematic training programme will be provided. However, experience in one or more of the following would be an advantage:


- Experience of practical mechanical and materials design issues.
- Interaction with suppliers of high integrity engineered components to ensure their design and manufacture meets requirements.
- Experience in presenting complex technical information to senior stakeholders, customers or regulators.

Mechanical Design Engineer - Gloucester

We are working with a globally positioned designer and manufacturer of specialist capital automated manufacturing equipment company based in Gloucester. Supporting a truly international customer base, they are seeking a Mechanical Design who will be responsible for the mechanical design of machine components and tooling, engaging in providing technical support to other company departments, as necessary.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, duties will include:

• Carry out detailed mechanical design work including 3D modelling, prototyping and design verification testing, as required. Agreeing the mechanical design approach with the Engineering Manager and other Senior Mechanical Design Engineers.
• Aware and capable to carry out risk assessments for safety regulations and CE compliance.
• Responsible for mechanical component selection taking into consideration standardisation, obsolescence, availability and cost.
• Responsible for preparing and presenting mechanical designs at design reviews.
• If required, generate minutes from Design Reviews.
• Ensure design files and information are kept up to date and stored in accordance with departmental procedures.
• Highlight all mechanical/technical risks to the Engineering Manager / Team Managers.
• Keeps up to date with the latest manufacturing techniques and drawing standards.
• Liaise with other departments to ensure that the required information is available when needed and customer requests are dealt with in a timely manner.
• Follow departmental processes relating to management of designs.
• Responsible for creation of 2D drawings to allow manufacture or purchase.
• Produce Customer Sign off drawings for new orders.
• Responsible for generation of Assembly drawings and bills of materials.

Person Specification

• Proven ability to understand/produce technical drawings.
• Ability to co-ordinate with the other discipline Engineers (electrical, pneumatics and software) within the department to produce multidisciplinary design solutions.
• Able to report mechanical design status on the assigned tasks whenever asked.
• Able to either answer all queries relating to the mechanical design or to field them to the appropriate member of the department.
• Liaise with other Company employees regularly to update design status & collate cost data relating to the mechanical design.
• Ensure the mechanical design functionally meets the user’s requirements.
• Produce designs to specified deadlines and achieve the required time-scales.
• Self-motivated and enthusiastic
• Good communication skills, dealing with other employees and external clients at all levels.
• Excellent IT skills, especially Solidworks.
• Good written communication skills.
• Full passport with ability to travel internationally for occasional customer visits.
