The Assistant Chief Nurse functions as a self-directed clinical leader, educator, and consultant utilizing management theory in collaboration with Patient Care Service (PCS) and other services. TIME LIMITED POSITION: This time-limited position will provide the peer support apprentice the time to learn and develop the necessary skills to perform as a peer specialist and to earn a peer specialist certification. After successful completion of a State or VA-approved contract vendor's peer specialist certification training process, and the necessary year of specialized experience, and time-in-grade requirements, the position would be eligible for a permanent, peer specialist position.

The Peer Support Apprentice functions as an interdisciplinary team member, assisting physicians and other professional/non-professional personnel in a rehabilitation treatment program. Peer support apprentices perform a variety of therapeutic and supportive tasks that include assisting Veterans in articulating their goals for recovery and personal wellness, learning and practicing new skills, helping them monitor their progress, assisting them in their treatment, modeling effective coping techniques and self-help strategies based on the apprentice's own recovery experience, and supporting them in advocating for themselves to obtain effective services. The position functions as a role model, exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills and serves as an advocate, provides information and peer support services for Veterans in outpatient, inpatient and/or community settings. This individual must develop the ability to assist others in treatment, based on the principles of recovery, wellness, and resiliency, by promoting self-determination, personal responsibility, and the empowerment inherent in self-directed recovery. By inspiring the hope that recovery and resiliency are achievable goals, the position can assist and empower Veterans, who are diagnosed with mental illnesses and/or co-occurring disorders, as well as other chronic illnesses or injuries, to achieve their personal recovery goals. The position performs a wide range of tasks to assist Veterans in regaining independence within the community and mastery over their own recovery and wellness process. As an entry level position, most duties are performed under close supervision by either a licensed independent provider (LIP) or a non-licensed provider who works under a LIP. The purpose of the supervision is to facilitate learning and the development of skills. The knowledge required for this position will be attained through ongoing instruction provided by the supervisor or designee (e.g., the Local Recovery Coordinator). In addition, the position must complete a State or VA-approved contract vendor's certification training process, to be eligible to be hired as a peer specialist.

1. The Critical Care Intensivist administers medical and critical care alone or supervises physicians-in-training (residents). In the Intensive Care Unit, he/she works closely with the other members of the care team including, but not limited to, surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, house staff, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, and social workers.

2. When supervising trainees, an attending Critical Care Intensivist meets the following conditions to demonstrate sufficient personal and identifiable medical services to the patient to exercise full, personal control over the management of medical care. The attending Critical Care Intensivist must as a minimum:

• Review the patient's history and the record of examination and tests.
• Personally examine the patient.
• Confirm or revise the course of treatment to be followed.
• Either performs the services required by the patient or supervises the treatment to assure that appropriate services are provided by residents.
• Be recognized by the patient as the responsible critical care provider.
• Remain physically present and available for immediate diagnosis and treatment of emergencies, or be available to assist residents.
• Provide indicated postoperative critical care.

3. Since attending Critical Care Intensivists in the service are also faculty members of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, they are expected to contribute to the teaching needs of trainees and Nurse Practitioners. This may include, but is not limited to preparing and delivering lectures, service as a preceptor, and providing one-on-one instruction. Attending Critical Care Intensivists, as faculty members, ate also expected to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the specialty by way of clinical and/or laboratory research and to participate in quality improvement activities.

• Seek out colleagues for mutual information sharing.
• Describe the quality improvement process, roles, and responsibility, and identify quality improvement activities on the unit.
• Assist in identifying problem areas in nursing practice.
• Ability to function as staff/charge nurse as needed.
• Provide timely semi-annual and annual performance evaluations.
• Ensure staff compliance with all mandatory education and training requirements.
• Approval of requests for leave; development and posting of staff work schedules; and certification of timecards.
• Maintain an effective labor/management partnership.
• Ensure the quality control mechanisms are in place, reporting adverse events, making recommendations for peer review, and preparing issue briefs as requested.
• Conduct recurring, routine staff meetings.
• Audit performance improvement and documentation.
• Budget development and monitoring in collaboration with leadership.
• Serve as a customer service liaison to resolve care concerns.
