The selectee will serve as a Supervisory Management and Program Analyst in the Human Resources Research and Assessment Division. Typical work assignments include:

1. Overseeing the administration of entry-level testing and promotional testing (to include maintaining test materials and test security, coordinating logistics for test centers, training others on test administration).
2. Developing detailed plans, goals, and objectives for assessment implementation and administration.

The Social Work Coordinator will work in all Geriatrics and Extended Care (GEC) Purchased Home and Community-Based Service (H&CBS) Programs at Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center in Spokane Washington. The Personal Care Service (PCS) programs that fall under this umbrella are Community Adult Day Health Care (CADHC), Homemaker/Home Health Aide (H/HHA), In-Home Respite, and Veteran Directed Care (VDC).
• Manages these programs and the agreements between all community agencies that fulfill services under these programs. The NIC Coordinator maximizes the psychosocial quality of life issues to assist Veterans in remaining in their home or a less restrictive level of care and keep them out of the hospital as often as possible. Serves Veterans who tend to have serious, frequent, and severe crises; lack of family or adequate community support networks; are poor self-monitors; frequently fail to comply with instructions and treatments; have significant deficits in coping skills; and require continuing psychosocial and medical support.
• Oversees the daily operation of these four programs. They are responsible for developing policies and procedures for program operation, and preparing reports and statistics for facility, VISN, and national use. Selectees will work in a Wilderness Information Center at Longmire or White River (Enumclaw) in Mount Rainier National Park. Selectees will perform duties related to wilderness and resource education and protection, hiker and climber safety, and visitor assistance and education. Important duties include:

• Provide information, assist with trip itinerary planning, and educate visitors about the principles of the "Leave No Trace' ethic. Issue climbing and wilderness camping permits. Work to resolve conflicts with trip itineraries in order to assure maximum resource protection. Wilderness Information Center duties require extended periods of standing and sitting.
• Receive telephone, email, and in-person requests for advanced reservations from the general public and commercial use authorization holders. Enter information into a permit system database, prepare confirmation letters, and issue wilderness permits.
• Conduct wilderness patrols to assess conditions and assist visitors in the backcountry. Navigate using map and compass. Use minimum impact hiking and camping techniques. Patrol in steep terrain and adverse weather conditions carrying a backpack weighing up to 50 pounds.
• May serve as a member of an in-park Incident Management Team or be called upon to provide emergency services such as medical, search and rescue, and wildland fire within the scope of training and certifications.

The chief duties of this position include professional alpine mountaineering, aviation, technical rope rescue, avalanche forecasting, and emergency medical services. You participate as a team leader or member on patrols to climb any of the 25 main routes on Mount Rainier. Terrain consists of trails, sub-alpine meadows, rocky slopes, snow fields, glaciers, and vertical ice from 1,800 to above 14,400 feet in winter-like conditions, even in the summer. Camping and climbing at high altitude, on glaciers, even in stormy conditions is required. Conducting resource monitoring, concession monitoring, and visitor interactions will also be your responsibility. You must maintain a high level of physical fitness and are required to be able to hike to Camp Muir in typical fair-weather summer conditions in less than four hours.

The incumbent is expected to ski proficiently in the backcountry, in off-piste terrain, and in a variety of challenging un-groomed conditions. Skis are used as a main mode of travel both up and down the mountain for all but about 3-4 months on Mount Rainier.

Major duties include:

• Leading technical rope rescue and helicopter rescues in an alpine mountaineering environment within Mount Rainier, North Cascades, and Olympic National Parks. Must be proficient as a backcountry skier or snowboarder.
• Providing emergency medical services and care for patients until they can be transported for additional medical treatment.
• Coordinating and performing as an instructor in mountaineering, aviation, emergency medical services, avalanche, and technical rope rescue disciplines.
• Staffing front-country ranger stations and registering climbers where preventative search and rescue and resource protection messages are given.
• Staffing climbing high camps including helping with general upkeep, cleaning, and sanitation of backcountry facilities.
• Leading multi-day alpine mountaineering patrols at Mount Rainier and occasionally at other national parks.

This position requires the mastery of a broad array of special technical skills, as well as leadership attributes in high-risk operations, with less than weekly oversight provided by a GS-11 supervisor. Incumbents are expected to enter on duty with a professional level of climbing and winter mountaineering background and experience. Major duties include:

• Staffing high camps and performing climbing patrols on Mount Rainier
• Conducting training and teaching advanced mountaineering techniques
• Performing alpine rescues, conducting emergency medical services, as well as a broad array of aviation/helicopter insertion and extraction techniques including Human External Cargo (short haul) operations.
• Overseeing daily operations of up to 10 rangers and mentoring individual rangers.
