Work Responsibilities

• Machine learning engineers active in the customer support field collaborate with the customer support department to develop functions using machine learning for customer inquiries. They develop not only functions and services directly used by customers utilizing "Mercari" but also features for handling inquiries using internal tools by customer support. Machine learning engineers use the cloud and Kubernetes to operate and improve machine learning systems.

Team’s Mission / Work Responsibilities

The AI / LLM Team’s mission is focused on two core pillars, "building" and "enabling" – delivering new AI-driven features and user experiences to maximize the impact of Mercari's business, as well as utilizing AI technologies to enhance productivity across the entire Mercari Group. As a machine learning engineer, you will work on ML architecture and feature engineering that touches all parts of the business as well as internal tooling.

Specific work responsibilities include the following:

• Develop and Optimize ML Models: Design, build, and optimize machine learning models to solve complex problems and perform specific tasks. Focus on optimizing model performance and scalability to handle large-scale production systems.

Work Responsibilities

Work on ML architecture and feature engineering that optimizes our search metrics 

Target Teams: Search Ranking, Search Relevance 

• Optimize the search quality to provide the best search and shopping experience on Japan's largest C2C marketplace platform
• Research and implement appropriate ML algorithms, design and develop machine learning applications for Search at Mercari Marketplace
• Keep up-to-date with the latest research and advancements in the field of machine learning, and combine information retrieval technology with modern machine learning methods from related fields such as NLP, Computer Vision, Multimodal, LLM, and so on
• Design engineering infrastructure to support machine learning systems at scale
• Apply software engineering rigor and best practices to machine learning, including CI/CD, automation, etc.
• Have product sense in making connections between technical success with business success
• Conduct experiments, A/B testing, and evaluations to measure the performance and effectiveness of various ML models.
• Experiment with large-scale data sets to gain insights and identify opportunities for improvement

Position Overview

Work Responsibilities

• Improving ad performance through the design, development, and maintenance of Elasticsearch
• Enhancing ad matching and search result relevance through the analysis and tokenization of queries using NLP
• Collaborating with data scientists and other engineers to enhance the integration and performance of Elasticsearch

Unique and Bold Challenges

• Launching advertising solutions on media with over 20 million MAUs 
• Mercari is providing advertising solutions, but is still in its early stages. It is expected to make a significant impact on the Japanese advertising market in the future. 
• Challenging revolutionary advertising measures that go beyond conventional frameworks 
• Advertising solutions are offered on many platforms, and there are numerous success stories. We can leverage the benefits of existing solutions to provide even better ones.

Required Skills

• Development and operational experience with Elasticsearch
• Knowledge and experience in search algorithms, relevance tuning, query optimization
• Expertise in natural language processing (NLP) technologies and tools
• Experience in handling data index, ETL processes, and large data sets

Preferred skills

• Experience in advertising domain or advertising platform
• Experience with Elasticsearch, Solr or other OSS search engines and analytical tools
• Knowledge of machine learning and data science related to search and personalization
• Experience in monitoring and log analysis (e.g., Grafana, Prometheus, ELK stack)

Language Requirements

• Japanese: Proficient (CEFR - C1)
• English: Basic (CEFR - A2) Preferred

Working Conditions

Employment Status

Full-time

• Probationary period: First 3 months after joining the company. (During this period your contract conditions will be the same as that of a permanent employee.)

Roppongi

• Smoking is prohibited within our offices
• Mercari has introduced a work style policy called “Your Choice.” Each member is free to choose whether they want to work in the office or work fully remote. *Exceptions made for certain kinds of work.

Work Hours

• Full flextime (no “core time” or “flex time”)
