We have an exciting opportunity in the School of Chemical, Materials and Biological Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Sheffield. You will join the dynamic and internationally renowned group led by Professor Ipsita Roy, specialist in the area of Natural Polymers of bacterial origin, within the Biomaterials research group. Professor Roy’s group is world leading in the area of Biomaterials with special focus on Biomaterials of bacterial origin including Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), Bacterial Cellulose, gamma-Polyglutamic acid and Alginate; and their biomedical applications.

The ideal candidate will at least have a PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering or a related area, with special focus on 3D printing of bespoke scaffolds with fused deposition modelling using specific CAD files and G codes. It will be an added advantage if you have experience in Polyhydroxyalkanoate production or any other polymer production via bacterial fermentation. You will be an enthusiastic, hardworking, organised, and dedicated scientist with the ability to efficiently plan and implement your work with high quality. You will be expected to have leadership qualities with the ability to enthuse and motivate members of Professor Roy’s group to achieve to the best of their ability. You will also be expected to write high quality scientific manuscripts describing the work done and to assist in grant proposal writing. You will need to be able to make high quality presentations at conferences to communicate the results achieved. Also, lab supervision of project students and PhD students and other teaching roles will be expected from you.

You will be funded by an EPSRC funded project “Highly Mucoadhesive Sustainable Patches for Effective Treatment of Oral Lichen Planus”. This project is in collaboration with Professor Jonathan Knowles at University College London, UK. Oral lichen planus is a T-cell mediated disease and is relatively common. It can cause significant pain, particularly in its erosive or ulcerative forms. Delivery of drugs to the oral mucosa represents an opportunity due to rapid absorption but also a challenge due to the complex environment. To deliver drugs to the oral mucosa, a patch is needed which is highly elastic but is also highly adhesive within the wet mobile environment. Once this is achieved, controlled drug delivery, both in the spatial and temporal context, of the therapeutic compounds, at appropriate levels, is important. This project aims to meet all these complex criteria. We will utilise a novel, highly elastic and adhesive medium chain length Polyhydroxyalkanoate (mcl-PHA) along with a short chain length PHA (scl-PHA) for enhanced processability, and further improve its adhesiveness using polydopamine coating chemistry.

The materials targeted will be a mcl-PHA and a scl-PHA which belong to a family of green, sustainable, biodegradable, bioresorbable and highly biocompatible polymers, produced using bacterial fermentation. The bioprocess used for the production is normally a fed batch fermentation. This production is currently being optimised at a 30L scale in Professor Ipsita Roy’s laboratory. You will be required to produce the PHAs for use in the development of the mucosal patch. However, your main focus will be the use of the PHAs for the production of 3D printed mucosal patches containing specific spatial distribution of the drugs to ensure that the steroids are mainly delivered to the mucosa.

The Co-Centre is an exciting 6-year, 35M Euro Research Investment funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs.

The Co-Centre brings together an academic team from 17 research institutions across all 3 jurisdictions. The vision of the Co-Centre is to develop innovative and transformative solutions to transition our food systems to become more resilient and sustainable through a multi and interdisciplinary programme of basic and applied research. The Co-Centre research is structured as Platforms, demonstrator projects and spokes which include targeted projects which are funded wholly or in part by industry. A platform dedicated to Nutrition and Health will provide evidence-based data to encourage the development, acceptance, and uptake of healthy diets from sustainable sources (HDSS) across all population groups.

This role will support Professor Louise Dye to conduct a programme of research within this platform which seeks to understand and ensure equitable access to breakfast provision and intake in children and adolescents across the Island of Ireland. This research will support the transition to HDSS and address micronutrient deficiencies.

Inspired by the human brain, neuromorphic computing aims to tackle the growing energy demand of AI-based systems. We have an exciting opportunity to join the School of Computer Science as part of an interdisciplinary team developing the next-generation computing hardware based on nanoscale magnetic systems. We are recruiting a Research Associate to join an EPSRC-funded project that aims to explore how different systems with complementary properties can be combined to overcome current limitations. To do this we will develop digital twins of experimental magnetic devices, which will be used to evaluate computational properties and train heterogeneous networks of devices applied on challenging real-world tasks. Successful candidates will contribute to groundbreaking research with the potential to significantly reduce the energy consumption of AI systems and accelerate advancements in the field.

This is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of machine learning and materials science. We are looking for someone with a strong interest in developing novel, unconventional computing systems to tackle complex machine learning tasks at low energy. You should hold a PhD, or be close to submitting, in a science or engineering discipline with a particular background in either machine learning or computational modelling. Experience with Python (or similar) programming and engineering mathematics would be advantageous.

In this role you will:
● Design digital twins and evaluate the computation performance of spintronic neuromorphic systems using novel machine learning techniques (neural ordinary and stochastic differential equations).

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Associate to work on a BBSRC-funded project which focuses on zebrafish
tail regeneration and specifically on how regeneration is initiated after wound closure. The project builds upon our Nature
Comms paper that identified a central role for Hedgehog signalling the initiation of regeneration. Some of the advanced
technologies that will be used in this project are: light sheet microscopy and single cell RNAseq analysis to identify early
regenerative genes.
Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field/discipline (or have the equivalent experience) along with experience in the
study of developmental, regenerative and/or cell biology using in vivo systems. Experience in confocal and widefield imaging
techniques and molecular biology techniques are also essential.

The Beckerman Lab is hiring a Research Associate (Post-Doc) for a NERC (UKRI)-funded project on assessing and managing
chemical impacts on UK freshwater biodiversity. The project uses computational ecology and mathematical modelling to
study the effects of multiple contaminants on complex food webs in future climate and land use scenarios. The work involves
data on land use, climate, and biodiversity, as well as chemical fate, transport, and exposure at 350 sites across nine
catchments in Yorkshire, UK.
Applicants must have a PhD related to modelling food webs, networks, and or species interactions with knowledge of marine,
freshwater and/or terrestrial communities. They must have experience developing with and using R, Julia, Python or C++ to
model networks and/or dynamical systems and perform statistical analyses.
