What skills and experience we're looking for

Main purpose of the role

To work with teachers as part of a professional team to support teaching and learning for SEN pupils. Providing learning support to pupils who need particular help to overcome barriers to learning, such as those with moderate, severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties and/or behavioural, social, communication, sensory or physical disabilities.

Core responsibilities and tasks

Key duties:

1. Work with individuals or small groups of pupils in the classroom under the direct supervision of teaching staff e.g. reading, crafts etc and provide feedback to the teacher

2. Work with pupils on therapy or care programmes, designed and supervised by a therapist/care professional

3. Support pupils to understand instructions support independent learning and inclusion of all pupils

4. Support the teacher in behaviour management and keeping pupils on task

5. Attend to pupils’ personal needs including toileting, hygiene, dressing and eating, as well as help with social, welfare and health matters, reporting problems to the teacher as appropriate Physically assist pupils in activities (may involve lifting, where mobility is an issue)

6. Prepare and clear up the learning environment and resources and contribute to maintaining a safe learning environment, including photocopying, filing and the display and presentation of pupils’ work.

Additional Support Needs Assistants at this level may also undertake any or all of the following:

1. Administer medication in accordance with an agreed plan under direction of healthcare practitioner and following appropriate training

2. Update pupil records

3. Support children’s learning through play

4. Assist with break-time supervision including facilitating games and activities

5. Assist with escorting pupils on educational visits

6. Support pupils in using basic ICT

7. Invigilate exams and tests

8. Undertake moving and handling activities as required.

Knowledge, skills and experience

• Working at or towards national occupational standards (NOS) in Supporting Teaching and Learning (core and relevant optional units as required)
• Knowledge and compliance with policies and procedures relevant to child protection and health and safety.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Establish a good relationship with pupils by using language and other communication skills that the pupils can understand and relate to.
To supervise children during breaks – both lunch and play.
Encourage pupils to interact with each other in an appropriate and acceptable manner.
Promote positive pupil behaviour in line with Academy policies by the use of praise and encouragement.
If necessary, help pupils with toileting and dressing, paying particular attention to hygiene.
To supervise the children’s play involving toys and apparatus and role play under the direction of the teacher.
To assist with language and other activities under the direction of the teacher.
To supervise and support the activities of individual and groups of children under the direction of the teacher.
To undertake playground supervision during the mid-morning and/or afternoon breaks and to deal with unruly behaviour and, where necessary, report difficulties to a member of the teaching staff. Supervise children in the dining area ensuring good standards of behaviour and manners and reporting any incidents of unacceptable behaviour to the Behaviour Team or Year Leader.
Work under the direction of the teacher to prepare and maintain an effective learning environment, by preparing work materials and apparatus and clearing up afterwards.
Set out learning materials as directed by the teacher so that pupils are able to participate safely and effectively in the planned activities.
To liaise regularly with the teacher and/or take part in planning meetings, inset days and any other meetings as required.
Provide consistent and effective support for colleagues in line with the requirements and responsibilities
of your role.
To assist in the recording of lessons and assessment as required by the teacher.
To take part in training activities offered by the Academy and the county to further knowledge.
To take part in such activities, including swimming and outings, as may be required.

To assist in the delivery of care plans involving the psychological treatment and / or management of a clients problems, under the supervision of a qualified professional psychologist. The post holder can be required to work in highly emotive atmosphere and must maintain a high degree of professionalism at all times. To assist in the co-ordination and running of therapeutic groups. To work with other staff to assess outpatients and inpatients and review their care in preparation for multi-disciplinary reviews. To assist in the development of a psychologically based framework of understanding and care to the benefit of all clients of the service, across all care settings. To attend and contribute to clinical psychology meetings and appropriate multidisciplinary meetings, as directed by the qualified clinical psychologists.

Exclusive Education is looking to appoint a one to one Portuguese Speaking SEN Teaching Assistant to support pupils with MLD in Fazakerley, Liverpool. This one to one Teaching Assistant role is to work with a Portuguese Student who can not speak English.

The ideal candidate will have previous SEN Teaching Assistant experience and experience of working with pupils with MLD.

In order to be considered for this one to one SEN Teaching Assistant role we require you meet the following criteria;

Hold a relevant teaching assistant qualification (e.g. NCFE, CACHE or NVQ Level 1, 2 or 3) (desirable)
Have eligibility to work in the UK or be a UK resident
Have previous experience of working with children in the last 2 years
