The Role and Department

We are looking for an experienced Team Leader to join our Post Award section within Research and Innovation Services (RIS). The Research Operations Post Award section is responsible for providing overarching support and quality assurance for research, knowledge exchange and expert services Post-Award finance-related activity, including financial management for live grants; provision of live grant information to grant holders and senior management; financial reporting to funders and other external bodies; and support in the management of studentships and grant administration.

You will have the following key responsibilities;

• Line manage a team of 5 Post Award Finance and Project Officers providing advice and guidance on University procedures and pastoral care.


• Provide training to new and existing staff members as appropriate and mentor team members to ensure a thorough understanding of university financial regulations, research related policies and external funders.

The Role

The Learning and Teaching Manager will work towards enhancing the quality of existing programmes, contributing towards reviews and evaluation for the purposes of continual improvement. You will work with colleagues to inform planning and developments in line with strategy and mission statements, implementing new programmes and initiatives.

You will manage and develop a team of professional services staff, working together to provide a high-quality administrative environment, supporting a wide range of teaching, learning and assessment activities from the point of student enrolment through to graduation, ensuring the student experience is at the forefront of delivery.

You will project manage the academic year in collaboration with key academic post holders, including the Director of Education and Chair of the Board of Examiners; planning and delivering department learning and teaching projects and service areas. This will include project coordination and administration of areas including student induction, assessments, and managing student records. A key part will be undertaking the role of Secretary to the Board of Examiners, where you will manage the annual examinations process, coordinating a complex yearly program which commences in October with supporting academic colleagues to write, review and finalise papers, and finishes the following September on completion of the resit period.

The Faculty of Business with a centralised Learning and Teaching team that support four academic departments seek a Learning and Teaching Manager. This exciting role will manage the delivery of the DBA programmes, aligning activities to meet operational objectives from the point of admissions through to graduation.This role is part time, working 28 hours per week.

The Learning and Teaching Manager will be part of the MBA/DBA Learning and Teaching administrative leadership team and will, along with the Senior Learning and Teaching Manager and other Learning and Teaching Managers, work flexibly to support this management team as required. The postholder will work towards enhancing the quality of existing programmes, contributing towards reviews and evaluation for the purposes of continual improvement. The Research Operations Team is part of Research and Innovation Services (RIS) and provides comprehensive support to academic and PSS colleagues across the lifecycle of a research project. The team comprises pre- and post-award services, consultancy support, and systems implementation and development. Support includes tailored financial and contractual advice and management to all researchers at Durham, from planning, costing, and pricing the initial proposal to ensuring that contracts and agreements are negotiated effectively and efficiently to ensuring robust financial management and compliance of awarded projects. As a Research Grants and Contracts Manager (RGCM) you will play a key role in supporting and developing externally funded research grant activity by providing high quality support and advice to academic staff in the preparation, submission and contractual negotiation of research grants and awards. You will join an enthusiastic and supportive team of RGCMs based in the central office but will also be expected to spend time in the academic departments you support to provide a key link role between the academic community and RIS.

The RGCM will be first point of contact for an academic wishing to apply for external research funding and will provide support and expert advice in a number of key activities including: identifying and disseminating funding opportunities, delivering training and information events, lay reviewing applications, project managing the submission process of the bid including responsibility for budget development and seeking internal approvals. Once awarded, and working closely with post-award colleagues, you will provide support to ensure timely acceptance of the award including contract negotiation and ensuring all ethical and due diligence checks are complete. It is essential that the RGCM is highly organised, pays close attention to detail, and has a pro-active approach to problem-solving. The capability to prioritise and manage a busy and varied workload is crucial. The ability to work across a number of concurrent projects at different stages of development is essential. A confident communicator, you will form close working relationships with the other members of the Operations Team, Research Development Team, Faculty Officials, Heads of Department, Directors of Research, Department Managers and other members of Professional Support Staff.

What will I do as the Registered Manager?

• Assure systems are in place to audit the quality of the care provision against nationally agreed standards of quality, Ofsted and regional Local Authority consortia. Working closely with the Regional Director and the Director of Quality and Compliance.  
• Ensure the service provides a child-centred and child-focussed environment where appropriate detailed assessments (care plans, risk assessments etc.) and programmes of activity are undertaken to meet the core needs of each young person. What are my responsibilities as Deputy Manager?

• Assist and support the Registered Manager in all aspects of the residential care of the Ofsted registered home, to provide a high-quality service which meets the individual needs of the children and young people and to help create and maintain a non-institutionalised, child centred safe community home for extremely vulnerable children with Social, Emotional and Behaviour difficulties.
• To provide support so that the young people are enabled to grow in all areas of their lives, to work towards emotional stability and to develop to their full potential.
• Support and supervise the staff team enabling them to carry out their duties to the best of their abilities
• Ensure that all aspects of the service provided meet the quality standards and comply with the Children’s Homes Regulations
• Guide children/young people throughout their placement and in transitions to and from the residential care environment holistically and in line with the quality standards
• Certify that the home is maintaining compliance with the standards and philosophy of care as outlined in the statement of purpose
• Assist and deputise for the home manager in all aspects of residential care at the home
• Take on on-call duties outside of working hours in support of the home dealing with situations in line with children’s homes regulations and company procedures
• Support staff on a day-to-day basis promoting good practice and responding to concerns or first-line complaints.

Minimum 2 years experience working within children’s residential. QCF Level 3 Children & Young People qualification or equivalent. Level 5 - Leadership & Management (preferred not Essential)
