What skills and experience we're looking for

Mathematics is a highly valued and popular subject at the King’s (The Cathedral) School. The department consists of a team of experienced and hard working specialists led by a very supportive Head of Department. The team have enjoyed strong academic success over a prolonged period of time. At GCSE in 2024 students achieved an overall progress score of +0.42, whilst at post 16, 76% of A Level Mathematics grades were A*-B and for Further Mathematics, this was 93%.

Teachers at the school enjoy working and interacting with our students. They are mature, highly motivated and inquisitive making teaching a stimulating and rewarding experience. Many students continue to study Mathematics at A Level where we will typically have up to eight groups across our A Level course. Further Mathematics is offered at both GCSE and A Level and is also a popular option. The Mathematics Department is located in its own suite of modern classrooms and a staff workroom. All classrooms are equipped with projectors, interactive whiteboards and computers. We have invested in various software packages available including subscriptions to ‘Mathswatch’, Dr Frost, GoTeach Maths and MathsBox. At GCSE we follow the 9-1 Edexcel course and we also follow Edexcel at Key Stage 5 for Advanced Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. Outside of the classroom, the team provide a wide range of support and opportunities for students including the UKMT Maths Challenge. The team are reflective in their practice and there is a strong culture of nurture and support for new colleagues. The embedded use of IT within the curriculum, especially the use of Interactive Whiteboards, has helped students in their learning. The team are always looking to develop their pedagogy, especially in how challenging concepts are modelled and explained and how learners understanding is checked and reviewed.

The King’s (The Cathedral) School is a very special place to work educating children from seven years old through to eighteen. The School has an incredibly strong reputation in the area and is one of a very small number of state Schools that has retained close links to the Cathedral dating all the way back to 1541. The School is heavily oversubscribed, staff retention is very high, and staff will typically choose to send their own children to the school for their education. The School places a real emphasis on students achieving well academically alongside participating in a wide range of sporting, musical and leadership opportunities. We are looking for a highly motivated, resilient worker with the ability to work calmly under pressure. You will need to demonstrate your enthusiasm to improve services for individuals with Special Educational Needs (SEND) and be able to organise and manage your work within set statutory timescales. You will be employed within the ALS Team in the Student Support Services department structure under the overall management of the Head of SEND and ALS. You will report directly to the SEN Coordinator for professional, personal and organisational direction.

Ideally the candidate will have a higher-level qualification in SEND or equivalent or be willing to work towards in the first year. What is the job role?

The Adult Education Service is positioned in the Employment, Skills & Adult Education team within the Council’s Regeneration and Economy Directorate. The strategic intent of the service is to maximise the employability of adults, so they can progress into work, further learning/training, or engage in voluntary, social and community activities.

The Service is recruiting a number of tutors with relevant skills, knowledge and experience in particular subject areas to design, plan, deliver and report on high quality adult learning programmes. These will include (non)accredited courses taught online and/or face-to-face in a range of community settings within the city. Provision will be delivered during the daytime, evening and at weekends, throughout the year, to meet identified needs.

Who are we looking for?

For all roles you will have up to date knowledge of curriculum practice and issues, and relevant teaching experience within a community-based adult education context. You will need to demonstrate the ability to deliver an (in)formal, culturally competent, and inclusive curriculum to raise aspirations and make a difference to residents from diverse backgrounds within the city.

You will have experience of setting individual targets and evaluating learner progress and achievements through both accredited and non-accredited provision. You must evidence a good understanding of equity and inclusion, safeguarding and Prevent and be proactive in relation to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.

You will have the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to a range of audiences and have the skills to promote Adult Education provision using a range of methods, including social media.

You should have English and Maths qualification at Level 2, a teaching qualification at Level 3. A subject specification qualification at Level 4 or equivalent is also desirable. The ability and willingness to teach in a range of venues within in the city, and throughout the year, is important.

The new Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) role is an exciting opportunity to deliver evidence-based early interventions for children, young people, and their families, working across both educational and healthcare settings.

Successful candidates will receive training in delivering Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) informed, guided self-help for mild to moderate mental health problems. They will gain their (funded) Diploma at the University of East Anglia, whilst working clinically within either a new or established Mental Health Support Team (MHST) in Norfolk or Waveney.

This is in collaboration with NHS England, Health Education England and the Department for Education, following on from the 2017 Green Paper Transforming children and young people’s mental health provision. This is a roll out of the work to improve access to mental health care for young people set out in the NHS Long Term Plan.

Successful candidates will be employed by Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust who deliver MHST services across Norfolk & Waveney.
During the training year, post holders will participate in 64 University days. The method of delivery is likely to be a blend of face-to-face learning (requiring travel to the University of East Anglia in Norwich) and online delivery.

Successful candidates will be employed on a full time one year training contract at Agenda for Change (AfC) Band 4. Upon successful completion of the training year (passing both UEA requirements and service requirement), a permanent AfC Band 5 EMHP contract will be offered.

Adult Education deliver a study programme at Southfields Old School for young people aged 16 - 24 years old with and without an Educations Health and Care Plan. We offer a range of qualifications, and the programme is designed to be flexible to meet the needs of individual young people. We deliver a range of qualifications to our learners within small groups.

We offer a range of pathways to our learners who are not in education, employment or training. Many of the young people who attend need additional support due to learning/behavioural difficulties or mental ill health.
