MAIN PURPOSE OF THE POST

You will help to meet quality standards necessary for accreditation, and ensure that protocols are followed in a way that maintains Health, Safety and Information Security for individuals, the Department and the Trust.

You will have a positive, professional approach to patient care and be keen to work as part of a busy, highly skilled team. Previous experience within a diagnostic laboratory is essential for this post.

You will be expected to actively participate in the training and development of technical, medical and support staff, as well as to be pro-active in your own continued development. We are seeking a new full time (10 PA) consultant to join our existing enthusiastic and experienced team of Orthopaedic oncology surgeons.

The Oxford Sarcoma Service is involved in many innovative initiatives to enhance the provision of surgery for both bone and soft tissue sarcoma whilst continuing to work closely with academic colleagues to build the evidence base for surgical procedures. We are looking for an applicant who is a team player and has relevant experience in both the management of sarcoma, including experience in using multidisciplinary team working and in undertaking complex reconstructive surgery to the hip, pelvis, knee and other site-specific areas as required.

Clinical and Research Responsibilities:
• Inpatient and outpatient care of haematological cancer patients being treated as part of trials performed on the EPCTU and selected trials being run through the late phase trials team. The focus will be on lymphoma, CLL and myeloma trials although will work collaboratively with the other haematological malignancy trials fellows and cross cover would be expected.
• Co-ordination and execution of trial activities for EPCTU, including (but not limited to) study specific investigations, sample collection and handling, data collection, case record folder completion, maintenance of study documentation;
• Liaison with a laboratory group to gain familiarity with the endpoint assays associated with the trial. There also be opportunities to gain experience in performing laboratory techniques associated with a translational project, although the principal focus of the fellow will be on clinical aspects.
• Under supervision, to undertake the setting up of clinical trials, including protocol design, grant applications, regulatory and ethical submissions, liaison with clinical trials units and preparation of study specific documentation.
• Preparation of results for publication.

Scientific and Technical

• Check in request cards ensuring that tests appropriate to the patient’s clinical condition are requested.

This is a unique post combining both administrative and housekeeping duties and provides a pivotal role in the running of Outpatients. Our busy outpatient department sees up to 300 patients per day, with 75 different consultants holding clinics alongside specialist nurses, therapy radiographers, research staff and pharmacists. If you feel that you are able to multitask and love variety in your job then this could be the role for you.





We are looking for someone who will primarily manage our online clinic room booking system (Bookwise) and also provide support for the senior nurses with other computer systems including, Health Roster, FirstCare and NHSP. You will also provide support for the clinic nurses to ensure patients requiring hospital transport for clinic are seen and returned home with minimal delays. On occasion you will also provide support for the phlebotomy service if needed.



The housekeeping part of the role is to ensure the department maintains high standards of cleanliness and that all equipment including computers are in good working order. Whilst this is not a clinical role you will have some contact with patients, perhaps offering them a drink or helping them with hospital transport, so we’re looking for someone who is caring and approachable, and can work flexibly to meet the demands of the busy environment.

To provide a comprehensive Administrative Support and Housekeeping service to the Oncology and Haematology Outpatients
• By taking a lead role in maintaining “Bookwise” clinic room booking system. This will include maintaining the day to day booking of clinic rooms, auditing of current use, planning for the future and liaising with all stakeholders.
• By providing the Senior Nurses in the department with administrative support with specific responsibility for coordinating the transport arrangements for patients.

RESPONSIBILITIES

‘Bookwise’ Administration Duties:-

• Keeping the ‘Bookwise’ spreadsheet up to date, liaising with the senior nurse if clinic space becomes available

Housekeeper duties:-


• To liaise with the cleaning contractor/in-house housekeeping services/Monitoring Officers to ensure that cleaning standards in Outpatients meet the agreed specification and any unsatisfactory areas are rectified. To escalate all non-conformance with cleaning protocols by cleaning contractor staff via the helpdesk and inform the senior nurse/co-ordinator of the shift. Escalate any non-conformance that remains unresolved 24 hours following initial escalation to the matron.
• To provide supervision and guidance to domestic staff to ensure that standards and policies are met.
• To liaise with the nursing and housekeeping team to ensure that work is planned in the most appropriate way to provide a patient focused and seamless service.
• To ensure, in conjunction with the Outpatient co-ordinator, that patients are provided with appropriate beverages at regular intervals throughout the day.
• To ensure patients and relatives have an appropriate supply of drinking water and a clean cup.
• To maintain patient privacy, dignity and confidentiality at all times.
• To ensure that all alcohol gel dispensers, paper towels and soap for hand hygiene are replenished, thus contributing to the prevention of cross-infection from one patient to another.
• To clean medical equipment as required in conjunction with nursing staff. Ensure that all patient equipment (e.g. hoist slings) is kept clean and in a usable condition.
• To monitor the general Outpatient environment, co-ordinate necessary repairs and maintain records of reported defects and remedial action taken. Following agreed training, change spent light bulbs in angle poised over bed lamps.
• To respond to complaints/concerns from patients and relatives that relate to facilities and housekeeping services, supporting nursing staff and ameliorating stressful situations.
• To take responsibility for the hygiene standards within the Outpatient kitchen/staff area. To monitor fridge temperatures and take corrective action where necessary. Ensure any food in Outpatient fridge is labelled, dated and disposed of if not correctly labelled.
• Monitor temperatures in clean utility and report any untoward events.
• Ordering of stores, supplies and leaflets.
• To ensure all waste disposal bins are kept in good condition and are cleaned to ensure no cross infection. To supervise an effective waste segregation and disposal service ensuring compliance with all relevant procedures and legislation. Administrator Duties:-


• Check weekly and daily those patients due to attend outpatients who require specialist transportation. Liaise with the senior nurse regarding these patients with comprehensive details of transport and patient ( mobility, medical history, communication issues )
• To deal with general enquiries to the unit regarding patients, both internally and from external agencies such as Police, other health care workers and insurance companies ensuring that they are directed to the correct department of the Trust.
• To liaise with relevant departments within the Trust as necessary to ensure a smooth patient pathway
• To record up to date patient information including social history, onto relevant EPR/IT systems

Obstetric inpatient and outpatient services are based at the John Radcliffe Hospital. In addition, outpatient obstetric clinics are undertaken at the Horton Hospital in Banbury. The successful applicant will be required to work across both sites.

The post-holder will also be expected to undertake planned daytime sessions to provide acute obstetric and intrapartum care as part of a consultant team which covers the Delivery Suite, elective caesarean section list and obstetric inpatient wards.

The post holder will participate in a rolling rota of on-call duties of no more frequent than 1:9, currently 1:16 with internal cover (equivalent to 1:12.8 annualised in the worked year). On call duties attract a 3% Band A supplement.



The post holder will manage in-patients at the John Radcliffe Hospital and undertake gynaecology on-call duties of no more frequent than 1:9, paid at a Band A supplement. Some clinics may take place outside of the acute trust and it is anticipated that over time more clinics will be located elsewhere.



The candidate is expected to undertake an all-day C-section list once a week with the maternity team and an antenatal clinic at the Horton Hospital.

Operational Delivery

The post holder will :
• Hold an independent caseload, and assess clients for the most appropriate equipment to help them access their home appliances and computer equipment
• Assist senior members of the team with complex assessments where access method or technical setup is more involved
• Conduct annual reviews to ensure safe and optimal use of the equipment provided to patients, from both a clinical and technical point of view

As required, the post holder will assist with:
• Setting up, installing and withdrawing equipment, ensuring each setup is tailored to individual patient needs
• Providing first line technical support and troubleshooting for patients

Work may be carried out by phone, video, or face-to-face with clients. This will involve travelling to see patients in their own environment (home, care home or hospital), primarily in the Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes areas. You do not need your own car, but you must be able to drive the service's pool cars.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities
Clinical
• Hold an independent caseload of clients within the Environmental Control (EC) service of SDS
• Prioritise caseload independently, and arrange appointments according to departmental policies
• Assess clients via a series of video and/or face-to-face appointments as required
• Take client history. This will require sensitivity, as our clients have complex disabilities. In many cases, this will include difficulties with communication, which could become a barrier to understanding. Information received may sometimes be distressing, as many of our clients are terminally ill
• Analyse client’s requirements. Use technical knowledge of the product ranges to compare the potential solutions, and identify the most suitable equipment to match the client’s needs
• Set up and assess with most suitable equipment, arranging trials where appropriate
• Where applicable, identify the most suitable equipment for the client (in some cases it may not be possible to provide equipment, which may be unwelcome news)
• Prescribe equipment required, in sufficient technical detail to ensure correct provision by 3rdparty Environmental Control companies
• Provide instruction and training to ensure complex equipment is used safely. This may be to client, client’s family, and/or client’s carers and other associated health and social care professionals
• Conduct reviews of clients to evaluate trials, or ensure that equipment is safe and being used optimally from both a clinical and technical point of view
• Concentrate for long periods, as both assessments, and drives to and from client can last several hours
• Work in varied locations across our region to visit clients. This can involve carrying heavy equipment, working in restricted positions, and being exposed to dust, dirt, or infections materials
• Write records on the hospital electronic record system to record the care given. This information is for the client, GP, referrer, as well as the wider team for future review
• Maintain own stock of assessment equipment. Order replacements as required. Follow team guidance for provision of equipment, to ensure team stays within budget
• Work as an autonomous clinician within own professional guidelines. Report back to line manager for advice as required, and to the wider team to ensure continued care to client for lifetime of equipment provision
• Support clinicians within the team by working jointly on more complex cases

Technical
• Have a good working knowledge and understanding of the range of equipment issued by the service, and be confident and competent in its use and limitations. This includes:• Environmental Control (EC) equipment from 3rd party companies including, but not limited to, Possum, Steeper, Smartbox, and PC By Voice
• Computer Access (CA) software from 3rd party companies, such as Grid 3, Dragon dictation
• alternative methods for accessing EC and computer hardware and software, including, but not limited to, eye gaze, switch access, alternative mice and headmice, alternative joysticks
• accessibility features of operating systems including Windows, MacOS, Android, and iOS
• equipment to mount and position EC and CA devices, such as floor stands, wheelchair mounts, and desk stands
• specialist wheelchair controls, such as head switches, light-touch joysticks, and chin joysticks
• bespoke electronic equipment manufactured within SDS
• Have sufficient dexterity, coordination, keyboard skills, and use of specialist tools to be able to operate the above
• Carry out acceptance and in-service checks on a range of medical devices (including PAT testing)
• Provide technical support and troubleshooting for clients
• Work with 3rdparty EC companies to keep up-to-date with their product ranges, and understand how their products can be integrated and customised to provide optimal solutions to individual client cases



Managerial and other
• Supervise the work of the Clinical Support Worker
• Assist with supervision of OT students
• Take part in audits as required (such as the annual EC audit)
• Take part in research as required
• Attend team meetings as required, to ensure that local, team, and national policies are followed. Contribute to development of new policies by commenting on


General ConditionsRisk Management

and should make themselves familiar with the ‘local response’ plan andtheirrole within that response.
Responsibilities for Health and Safety
The post holder is responsible for ensuring that all duties and responsibilities of this post are carried out in compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, Statutory Regulations and Trust Policies and Procedures. This will be supported by the provision of training and specialist advice where required.
Infection Control
Infection Control is everyone’s responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non-clinical, are required to adhere to the Trusts’ Infection Prevention and Control Policies and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby reducing the burden of Healthcare Associated Infections including MRSA.

All staff employed by OUH have the following key responsibilities:
• Staff must wash their hands or use alcohol gel on entry and exit from all clinical areas and/or between each patient contact.
• Staff members have a duty to attend mandatory infection control training provided for them by the Trust.
• Staff members who develop an infection (other than common colds and illness) that may be transmittable to patients have a duty to contact Occupational Health.
Child Protection
The post holder will endeavour at all times to uphold the rights of children and young people in accordance with the UN Convention Rights of the Child.
Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults
The Trust is committed to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults throughout the organisation. As a member of the trust there is a duty to assist in protecting patients and their families from any form of harm when they are vulnerable.
Information Governance

Data quality is a vital element of every member of staff’s job role. Oxford University Hospitals recognises the importance of information in the provision of patient care and in reporting on its performance. Data quality is therefore crucial in ensuring complete, timely and accurate information is available in support of patient care, clinical governance, performance management, service planning, and financial and resource planning and performance.
