An excellent opportunity has arisen for a full time Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse post within the SACT Outreach Team.

The SACT Outreach Team delivers treatments for Patients closer to home. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team providing care closer to home.

The Sister/Charge Nurse will be requiredto provide support to the Senior Sister and work with other colleagues within SACT services. To take responsibility for the co-ordination of the Closer to Home clinics, including Patient care and skill mix, and the development and support of the nursing staff in the absence of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse.

To support with the management of the service including delivery of SACT and patient care, as well as the development and support of the junior staff within the Team.

You will also be required to provide support where required to Oak Road Treatment Centre and staff.

Once established in the role, you will be expected to co-ordinate Outreach Clinics, develop your clinical skills within SACT and teach others. You will also manage staff, their personal development needs and management of attendance.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provide a supportive role within the SACT outreach sites for nursing, medical and clerical Staff whilst providing cover between the Chemotherapy Services Units. This will include all other SACT outreach sites.

2. Undertake the nursing care of patients, ensuring privacy & dignity is maintained whilst being aware of physical and psychological needs

3. To give a clear and accurate update at change of duties and ensure accurate documentation of nursing interventions

This is an RCOG recognized Gynecological Oncology subspeciality training programme leading to RCOG Gynaecological Oncology subspecialty accreditation.

The appointed candidate will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trust’s Clinical Governance programme. This includes active participation in clinical audit, quality, clinical guidelines/pathways, professional development, appraisal, and risk management. This role involves working within team delivering tertiary-level surgical care to Gynaecological cancer patients. It requires a dedicated individual interested in gynaecological cancer and who will be immersed in complex surgery and all this entails. Pivotal to the role would be good communication skills to discuss in detail diagnosis, complex surgical issues, and subsequent managements. Strong background in general gynaecology required to provide good understanding of patient journey prior to cancer diagnosis and support patient throughout. The trainee must work well in a team and across other specialities. Surgical training will be available in both open and robotic surgery.

Active participation in weekly Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings to triage patients accordingly for local or specialist surgery is encouraged. Consultation of new and follow up patients in clinics supervised by Senior Colleagues and supported by Clinical Nurse Specialist will occur regularly. Identification and subsequent management of complex pre-operative issues will be encountered and experience gained in this area. Daily ward rounds/ pre-operative assessments will be shared amongst Clinical Fellows along with ample theatre sessions. Surgical training will be tailored according to the individual trainee’s ability but wide range of surgical training is available for both open and robotic surgery. There will be opportunity to provide emergency services which covers all the surgical specialities in the directorate (gynaecology, colorectal, urology & plastics).

Additional to training in gynaecological oncology, there will be opportunities to attend MDT & theatres of other specialities, as well as non-surgical specialities in the Christie to achieve sub specialty training.Research & audit within the role is encouraged and accommodated within the trainee rota.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This is a 40 hours per week appointment (full time) at Specialty Registrar level, working in one of the country’s leading Gynaecological Oncology centres. It is expected that the successful candidate will play a key part in the team, as a clinical fellow but also concentrating on a particular area of service development. More focused surgical training can be tailored to the suitable candidate. There will be fully supervised and supported work in both ward and outpatient settings, oncological procedures in theatre, and research. The area of research may fall into: robotic surgery, introduction of HIPEC in ovarian cancer and psychosexual health following gynaecological surgery.

The post holder will support the Consultant Gynaecological Oncology Surgeons, work alongside Junior Doctors and liaise closely with Senior Medical colleagues and all grades and levels of AHP and management teams. The appointee’s professional time will be deployed flexibly in appropriate areas: clinical duties, administration, teaching, research, clinical audit etc. Detailed elements of the job plan arrangements are to be agreed with the successful applicant when in post.

The center wishes to build its current research portfolio and continue regional collaboration, publication and presentation and it is expected that the post-holder will actively participate in this.



In addition to Gynaecological Oncology work, the Christie team works closely with other surgical specialties at The Christie as part of a tertiary referral “Pelvic Surgery Team”. This team comprises 9 Colorectal, 7 Urological and 4 Oncoplastic Surgeons specialising in complex abdomino-pelvic malignancy. They undertake ultra-high volume complex pelvic and exenterative surgery for a population of >8 million people.

Role Planning

The following provides an outline of the expected clinical activity and clinically related activity components of the job plan which occur at regular times in the week. Agreement should be reached between the appointee and their Training Programme Director with regard to the scheduling of all other activities, including the Supporting Professional Activities. Upon appointment, the subspecialty trainee will be given a specific “work programme” detailing the initial allocation of direct clinical care activities and supporting activities. We are looking for a highly motivated nurse, interested in helping to improve patient treatment outcomes for patients affected by lymphoma. Research nursing is an exciting and developing role, supported through the R&I division with a good education and development package in place to ensure that staff reach their potential.

This post presents an excellent opportunity to join the establishing and Lymphoma Research team with a varied portfolio of early and late clinical trials.

Central to this role is the responsibility of assessing and managing the care pathways including the delivery of all specified treatments for participants in research within a multidisciplinary team. Key responsibilities of the post include the co-ordination of the trial protocols and support for patient affected by lymphoma.

A background in oncology, flexibility in working, excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential. Experience in clinical research and/or haematological malignancies would be desirable.

This advert is currently for a 12-month fixed contract as a maternity cover with a view to extend at the end of the post according to staffing at the time. This will be a band 5- 6 progression post. Competencies to be achieved for progression from band 5 to 6 will be focused on research delivery in oncology. This will include training sessions and work-based assessment.

As a Clinical Research Nurse (CRN), you will be providing patient-centred insights to the research delivery team by supporting both the patients and the team through all aspects of clinical research of the Lymphoma portfolio.

You will be involved in every stage of the portfolio activities including feasibility reviews and set-up of and new trials. Patient recruitment and management is a key part of the role, including the administration of complex treatment regimes. You will be supporting team with data query resolution and reviewing protocol amendments.

You will be required to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, possess strong motivation and have the ability to work independently.

With support from the team the CRN will ensure that the safety and wellbeing of the patients is maintained within the requirement of the multi-regulatory frameworks for clinical research ensuring compliance with ICH/GCP standards and Trust SOPs.

Clinical Research Co-ordination

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· To aseptically prepare high quality Cytotoxic/MABS/EAMS etc. in accordance with departmental procedures, Good Manufacturing Practice and COSHH regulations ensuring that all work complies with all regulatory frameworks and standards.

· Undertake daily cleaning and disinfection of the aseptic clean rooms including Isolators, according to Standard Operating Procedures.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



Planning and organisational duties:
• Provide professional and management leadership to support the development of clinical research activity for defined staff.
• Supports with the development and implementation of the R&I strategy and objectives.

Patient / service user related duties
• Be an expert practitioner and clinical role model in the field of oncology nursing, with specific expertise in clinical research and the development of protocol defined follow-up care involving the patient management and monitoring of late effects.
• Be an advocate and role model for developing and delivering care that is responsive to changing requirements, informed by an understanding of local population health needs, agencies and networks.

• To act as the pharmacy lead for antimicrobial stewardship strategy across the Trust.
• To take a lead role in the production, implementation, management and review of trust antimicrobial policy and strategy, guidelines, and practices as appropriate. To establish performance indicators against which practice may be monitored.
• To work closely with the Infection Control team and consultant microbiologists to manage antimicrobials usage effectively throughout the Trust as part of Antimicrobial Stewardship.

This post presents an opportunity to join an established research team with a varied portfolio of clinical trials as a Senior Clinical Research Nurse (sCRN). The Lung cancer research team is responsible for a varied portfolio of academic and commercial clinical trials.

Key responsibilities of the post include supporting the coordination of the patient’s pathway through an agreed portfolio of clinical trials across Lung. Excellent communications skills in all forms are required for this role for difficult clinical conversations with patients and their families. Experience of line management and excellent leadership skills are required.

The sCRN will interact with a variety of research professionals across The Christie, including the NIHR Manchester Clinical Research Facility, as well as across Manchester and wider networks. By utilising national frameworks for auditing patient experiences, the sCRN will ensure that patients in the Lung disease portfolio studies have the best possible experience while participating in clinical research.

Additionally, the role involves raising the profile of the clinical research nurse and clinical trials within the trust by engaging in promotional events related to clinical research and contributing at local, national, and international meetings.

The Lung disease team consists of nurses and consultants with clinical trial coordination and project management support. The portfolio is driven to deliver treatment opportunities to as many patients with Lung at The Christie as possible.

There is a close working relationship with all members of the team with a strategy to increase recruitment into these niche protocols thus offering patients more opportunities to be involved in clinical research. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



Clinical Research Co-ordination
• Work autonomously in all areas of practice relating to clinical research.
• Understand and deliver care in accordance with regulatory approved clinical research protocols.
• Oversee the process for obtaining NHS permissions (R&D approval) for clinical trials within team. As project lead, ensures permissions are in place prior to any patient recruitment.
• Undertake feasibility and risk assessments of clinical trial protocols in conjunction with Team Leader, Principal Investigator and Senior Clinical Trials Co-Ordinator
• Ensure all clinical trial activities are recorded in appropriate systems in a timely manner.

Clinical Service and Professional Responsibilities

Ward 4 is an acute medical Oncology ward, which specialises in caring for patients with Altered Airways, based within one of the leading cancer centres in Europe. We are a 25 bedded ward, which is comprised of open bays and side rooms. We care for a variety of different disease groups. This provides an array of exposure, broadens knowledge, and expertise within the field of oncology. We treat patients with a full range of diagnostic, inpatient, and treatment needs. Alongside specialising in Altered Airways, we administer chemotherapy regimens, we also support patients during their treatment with the symptoms and side effects of treatment. We care for palliative patients providing symptom control and also end-of-life care.

ORGANISATIONAL ARRANGEMENTS

If you are you passionate and have experience working within lung cancer, leadership and want to develop your skills further in oncology and research then this is the post for you. Clinical supervision experience skills will enable you to support the band 6 dietitians and students. Excellent presentation skills will be required to carry out training and education to the HCPs on a regular basis

As a senior specialist Lung/ SAO oncology dietitian, you will
• Be clinically responsible for the nutritional care and management of lung / SAO patients and independently plan organise and prioritise patient related and professional demands daily.
• Provide an expert nutritional support and dietary education service for lung and SAO oncology outpatients attending the Christie Hospital.
• To act as a specialised resource on nutrition and cancer for lung patients, carers, medical staff, nursing staff, and other health care professionals associated with the Christie Hospital and at regional and national level.

• To provide support and supervision to band 6 rotation dietitians

1. To be clinically responsible for a highly complex area of work, as agreed with the dietetic manager and independently plan, organise and prioritise patient related and professional demands.
1. To develop the lung and SAO dietetic service alongside the lung teams with the support of the dietetic manager.
1. To work closely with the Senior Adult multidisciplinary oncology team to enhance the person’s health, wellbeing and quality of life and contribute to the management of frailty syndromes, prior, during and post-treatment.
1. To nutritionally assess lung / SAO oncology patients by interpreting and evaluating anthropometric, biochemical, clinical, and dietary data, whilst considering the patients social and ethnic circumstances, prognosis and treatment.
1. To convey complex specialised dietary advice and lifestyle changes to patients and carers using advanced counselling and communication skills.
1. To attend appropriate multidisciplinary meetings and outpatient clinics in order to provide expert advice to clinicians regarding provision of nutritional support to lung oncology patients and carers based on clinical evidence
1. To diagnose malnutrition and to liaise with the appropriate consultant, with an aim of optimising treatment outcome, by recommending the appropriate method of nutrition intervention and reducing risk of Refeeding Syndrome.

Ideally educated to Masters level, you will be expected to practice autonomously at an advanced level with highly developed specialist knowledge and skills in the diagnosis and management of lung oncology patients. As a lead specialist in a defined area of radiotherapy related care, the ACP (Lung Oncology) will formulate clinical decisions and complex treatment plans to manage acute and chronic illness and will respond to actual and potential health problems appropriately. Working hours must be flexible to fit the needs of the service and individuals will be expected to participate in all shift patterns and will be contracted to work between 6am and 11pm.

Communication
• The post holder will provide and receive highly complex, and sometimes sensitive information on aspects of patient care.
• Persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or re-assurance skills will be routinely utilised and they will be required to achieve consensus amongst themselves, the consultant medical colleagues and other members of the MDT.

Knowledge Training and Experience
• The post holder will have highly developed specialist knowledge across radiotherapeutic, chemotherapeutic, surgical, palliative and other medical aspects of patient care within lung oncology. This will be underpinned by theoretical knowledge and extensive relevant practical experience, acquired through a combination of in-depth experience and postgraduate post-registration study, such as that obtained through a master’s degree. They will have significant formal training in, or experience within lung oncology.
• They will maintain and develop this expertise and competence in order to enable collaboration with senior colleagues and medical staff, and to facilitate the management of patients.
• They will exhibit the knowledge, skills and experience to allow them to act as an expert resource and provide advice and support to ward/departmental areas and to The Christie’s local, regional, national and international partners.
• The post holder will maintain professional registration and practice through CPD including maintaining a professional portfolio to demonstrate competency in line with the trust competency framework so as to ensure that skills remain optimal and new elements can be added to the skills portfolio. They will identify their own development needs in line with service requirements and participate in setting a personal development plan. To support this they will work with a named mentor from within the medical team.



Analytical and Judgemental Skills
• The post holder’s key function will be as an ACP (Lung Oncology) supervising critical elements of the patient pathway in patients under the care of a Clinical Oncologist who acts as the consultant of record. As such they will act as part of a clinical team led by the oncologist. They will assess complex facts and situations, using analytical skill, interpretation and comparison of a range of options using a wide variety of assessment methods. In the clinical management of patients, competing, contradictory or unclear inputs are expected. Owing to the nature of the post following the whole patient pathway, they may have competing expected outcomes from the patient, the Trust, and other healthcare partners.
• The post holder will continually review and evaluate their own role and clinical practice informing the annual review process. They will practice evidence based health care and by assessing clinical evidence, best practice guidelines and national policy statements will be responsible for defining developing, monitoring and updating Trust clinical policies in relation to their own area of practice. They will analyse relevant national policies in specific tumour sites, advise on impact for service, and contribute to the implementation of changes and evaluation of processes in partnership with the MDT.



Planning and Organisational Skills
• The post holder will plan and organise complex clinical management plans. Plans will be formulated and adjusted to respond with developments and changes in circumstances such as changes in the patient’s conditions. This will involve developing, structuring and scheduling activities, including the allocation of tasks to colleagues, within the Trust or from partner organisations. They will have responsibility to lead on translating developments within their specialist area for implementation in the clinical setting.

Responsibility for Patient/Client Care
• As a ACP (Lung Oncology), the post holder will provides highly specialist clinical and technical services. They will provide highly specialised advice to the Radiotherapy Multi-Professional Team which contributes to the design, implementation and monitoring of their radiotherapy and other elements of the clinical pathway of patients undergoing treatment for lung cancers.
• The post holder will prescribe drugs, including concurrent chemotherapy, unlicensed medication and drugs used within clinical trials as qualified Supplementary and/or Independent Prescriber; medications so prescribed will include opioids and as such the post holder will comply with the relevant Controlled Drugs policies and regulations. They will comply with the Trust’s non-medical prescribing (NMP) policy.
• They will prescribe blood products as per hospital policy.
• The post holder will recognise patients’ needs and act as an advocate for patients, carers and support partners. They will develop patient specific information and ensure patients receive appropriate information, advice and support in relation to their illness and treatment.
• They will refer patients to other professionals as appropriate and provide an environment that encourages patient centred involvement.
• The post holder will assess, recognise and manage radiotherapy radiation-induced toxicity and cancer-related side effects during and after treatment.
• The post holder will perform clinical assessments, such as rectal, vaginal and oral examinations; they will request relevant investigations for patients attending for treatment and review; following investigation they will interpret the results and take action appropriately. They may administer oral, rectal or intra-vesicle contrast media.
• At all times, they will ensure interventions are undertaken in line with best practice guidance and will perform clinical procedures safely according to defined protocols.

• Pursuant to the Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposures) Regulations, 2000 (as amended) (IR(ME)R), act in the role of Referrer, Practitioner and/or Operator for imaging, treatment and treatment verification exposures and will at all times make follow departmental and diagnostic group policies in regards to referral, optimisation, justification and authorisation of radiotherapy.

The Christie hotline is a 24/7 telephone service which provides specialist advice and support to all Christie cancer patients as well as to their carers and community doctors and nurses. It is important for patients and their carers to have access to this service to manage side effects and any complication of treatment.

The team is a group of specialist nurse advisors with extensive oncology and haematology experience.

Acute oncology experience is desirable and oncology experience is essential.

The successful candidate will be an effective team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• To provide telephone triage assessments for calls to the acute oncology management service (incorporating the hotline).
• To give advice to patients/carers for patients who are experiencing problems following systemic anti-cancer treatments.

1.1 Provide 24/7 telephone helpline service to enable patients to access expert advice and management with the side effects of their treatments.
