We have a fabulous opportunity for a Specialist Pharmacist (Band 7) - Technical Services to join our aseptic team at Royal Blackburn Hospital.

This role will focus on ensuring the effective and efficient quality assurance of unlicensed aseptic products and to provide support for the specialised chemotherapy clinical service.

The Technical service operates under the section 10 exemption of the Medicine Act 1968 (as referenced in The Human Medicines Regulations 2012) and comply with the standards of the Quality Assurance of Aseptic Preparation services QAAPs.

We are seeking a motivated individual who demonstrates commitment, accountability and is a positive role model for our Aseptic Technical Team and Chemotherapy Clinical Team.

We need a team player with technical and clinical skills to help develop a complex part of our pharmacy service.

We want your enthusiasm and ideas in to providing a first-class pharmacy service in our busy Cancer Unit, tertiary Neonatal and Hepatobiliary (HBP) service.

The service is undergoing developments and you will help with the project and look at expanding the service towards a Specials Manufacturing Licence.

Technical Services deliver a central intravenous additive service (CIVAS) providing an adult and neonatal parenteral intravenous service (TPN), complex no cancer monoclonal antibodies (MABs), chemotherapy, immunotherapy, complex clinical trials, antibiotics, and continuous infusions, for clinical areas across Blackburn and Burnley site.

You will have excellent capabilities to work as a team member, essential for creating, improving, and sustaining the safety, quality, and efficiency of our service and the Quality Management System to ensure we maintain compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice, regulatory and legislative requirements.

Integral to the role will be:
• Acting as "Authorising Pharmacist" under section 10 exemption
• Adherence with the overarching Pharmaceutical Quality Management System (PQS) for Technical Services
• Provision of leadership with regards to all operational quality aspects
• Provision of a Specialist Oncology Service.
• Supporting the Principal Pharmacist in building and maintaining a robust Quality Management System (QMS).

The post holder will:
• Assist the Lead Oncology Pharmacist, Lead Aseptic Pharmacist and Lead Clinical Trials Pharmacist on all aspects of the service, on matters relating to aseptic dispensing, the aseptic preparation of parenteral drugs, investigational medicinal products (IMPs) and the regulatory aspects of pharmacist supervision in unlicensed and licensed premises.
• Work with the Lead Aseptic Pharmacist and Principal Pharmacist for technical services to maintain and improve the pharmaceutical quality system and participate actively at quality management system meetings.
• Work closely with the wider aseptic team to ensure the smooth running of the aseptic units.
• Maintain a high quality, cost effective and efficient patient-centred pharmacy service in the provision of aseptic services.
• Assist the senior pharmacy technical services team to ensure that clinical trials are set up and conducted in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and aseptic products are prepared in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and all relevant medicines regulations and ethical requirements, to ensure the product is fit for its intended use.
• Contribute and support the Principal Pharmacist for technical services in maintaining the document control system, reviewing as per schedule any relevant procedures and worksheets.
• Assess the stability of new and existing products, investigate deviations, and determine root causes, and contribute to the development of corrective and preventative actions.
• Complete internal audit and quarterly unit inspections, identify gaps with standards and agree action plans with the Senior Aseptic team.
• Assist with the Planned Preventative Maintenance and Validations programme for the Technical Services Unit.
• Contribute to the development of other staff and provide professional leadership and supervision to the haemato-oncology/aseptic service.
• Be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of haemato-oncology clinical pharmacy service, under the overall direction of the Lead Oncology Pharmacist
• Provide a consistently high level of pharmaceutical service in line with corporate objectives and government initiatives.
• Identify risk management issues and assist in developing safe systems of practice with the aseptic/chemotherapy service.

You will work with the Senior Pharmacist for AMU and on occasion ED, other AMU/Acute Care specialist pharmacists and technicians to deliver a safe and effective pharmacy service. The AMU Pharmacy service currently operates between 8am-7pm seven days a week.

We have an established team of non-medical prescribing pharmacists and technicians embedded within both our AMUs and ED and are pleased to be able to add to this service at an exciting time when pharmacist roles have advanced beyond all recognition and there is scope to be at the forefront of patient diagnostics and management and work as clinical practitioners if this is desired.

Post-holders will undertake a non-medical prescribing course to make the most of their abilities, and will be supported to undertake further professional or clinical developments in line with service needs. You should have completed your first year of your clinical diploma or working towards completion.

You will work a designated shift pattern to include weekends; this will discussed and open to negotiation (including fixed compressed hours )at interview. You will support the late night rota (main dispensary pharmacy open until 7pm) and/or the on-call rota on an average basis of one shift every three weeks.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual to join our friendly support team in the Microbiology department at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital. The duties will include receipt and handling of patient samples such as blood, urine, faeces, sputum, and tissues for routine testing and swabs for COVID testing.

Daily tasks include the sorting and processing of patient samples using manual and automated systems. Inputting patient and test data onto the laboratory computer system as well as answering telephone enquiries. The work requires the ability to perform a number of repetitive tasks to a high technical standard.



Full training will be provided but any previous laboratory experience will be an advantage.

The post is full time (37.5h/w) and a flexible working approach will be required. The successful candidates will be required to work regularly during evenings and will participate in the weekend and Bank Holiday rotas.

RESEARCH Assist staff in developing their skills in the understanding and use of research to inform practice. Ensure all clinical decisions are evidence based and to assist staff in bridging the theory/practice gap. Develop further knowledge and understanding of audit and research processes and demonstrate this by application to the delivery of high quality, clinically effective care in practice. Lead on audits and evaluation of work that may be required to develop and improve palliative/end of life care with particular emphasis on prescribing, medicines management and symptom control.
