A Vacancy at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.


This is an exciting opportunity to join a team of dedicated consultants and other members of the multidisciplinary teams to help shape a modernising mental health service, which has been transformed following recent changes in community settings and inpatient provision.



The consultant will work on the Inpatient Unit at North View, North Manchester General Hospital, for which the move will take place in early November 2024.

The new post holder will have joint consultant responsibilities for Forest Ward. Forest ward is the replacement for Mulberry Ward which is a mental health ward 20 beds. There will be areduction in beds before the move to 17. As such, this advertisement is for a full-time consultant post.

A high proportion of patients admitted to the ward suffer with psychosis and are detained on a section of the Mental Health Act. The consultant is expected to attend daily reviews on the ward and daily ward rounds. They will provide leadership and medical input. They will fulfil the role of the Responsible Clinician. They will be involved in training junior doctors, teaching medical students and engage in clinical management, audit and governance.

Clinical role

· Provide clinical leadership for the ward team and trainees

·The ward has 9 beds and patients can be admitted from across the trust’s patch, it will have 17 beds

·Conduct daily ward reviews and ward rounds, support the team to complete CPA

·Undertake assessments of admissions to the service

·Assist team to diagnose and formulate management plans in all presentations.

·Assessment and management of risk including of vulnerability, suicide risk, risks to health and safety and risk of harm to others.

·Coordinate care with input from pharmacists

·Preparation of Mental Health Review Tribunal and Managers’ Hearings reports and attendance at subsequent hearings.

·Preparation of consent to treatment paperwork as well as any other MHA work such as section 17 leave, section renewals and CTOs if required

·Work in a collaborative way with multidisciplinary teams including external partners.

·Work in partnership with psychiatrists from partner providers such as Forensic and Rehabilitation Psychiatrists.



Leadership role

·Lead clinical decision making in the multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of high-quality care

·Develop service clinical priorities in line with national and professional guidance and standards

·Engage with service transformation programmes including attendance at Consultant meetings for their service and directorate.

Join an established Inpatient team, and a supportive Consultant group within leafy Trafford in South Manchester. Flexible working patterns are supported and the role can be adapted if the successful applicant wishes to work part time or establish other interests for example research. The Consultant Psychiatrist will be responsible for the care of 15 patients on Medlock ward, a 21-bedded all female acute assessment ward, with the support of ward Associate Specialty doctor who is already in post. They will take an active role in the developing the service in line with trauma informed care and be supported in innovation in the delivery of patient centred high quality care. This is based at the Moorside Unit, on the site of Trafford General Hospital.

Role of the Inpatient Consultant Psychiatrist on Medlock ward

· Provide Medical leadership for MDT meetings

· Carry out comprehensive psychiatric Assessment and provide treatment for inpatients on the ward.

· Support ward based staff to manage psychiatric emergencies

· Conduct patient reviews and lead Multidisciplinary ward reviews, CPA reviews and multi-professional meetings

· Be the responsible clinician for the purposes of the Mental Health Act 1983(amended 2007) and carry out duties in accordance to the code of practice.

· Renew and maintain Responsible Clinician status according to agreed procedures.

· Carry out comprehensive Risk Assessments and participate in Trust’s risk management processes

· Provide medical leadership to the inpatient ward team

· Maintain a high level of effective communication and work flexibly and cooperatively with other parts of the service including; other wards and inpatient units, community mental health teams, services and primary care

· Liaison with Families and Carers

· Complete reports for Mental Health Tribunals with the support of the Staff Grade doctor

· Attend Mental Health Tribunals or supervise other members of the medical teams in Tribunal work Assess for use of the Mental Health Act, complete consent to treatment and authorise Section 17 leave
