TIME LIMITED POSITION: This time-limited position will provide the peer support apprentice the time to learn and develop the necessary skills to perform as a peer specialist and to earn a peer specialist certification. After successful completion of a State or VA-approved contract vendor's peer specialist certification training process, and the necessary year of specialized experience, and time-in-grade requirements, the position would be eligible for a permanent, peer specialist position.

The Peer Support Apprentice functions as an interdisciplinary team member, assisting physicians and other professional/non-professional personnel in a rehabilitation treatment program. Peer support apprentices perform a variety of therapeutic and supportive tasks that include assisting Veterans in articulating their goals for recovery and personal wellness, learning and practicing new skills, helping them monitor their progress, assisting them in their treatment, modeling effective coping techniques and self-help strategies based on the apprentice's own recovery experience, and supporting them in advocating for themselves to obtain effective services. The position functions as a role model, exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills and serves as an advocate, provides information and peer support services for Veterans in outpatient, inpatient and/or community settings. This individual must develop the ability to assist others in treatment, based on the principles of recovery, wellness, and resiliency, by promoting self-determination, personal responsibility, and the empowerment inherent in self-directed recovery. By inspiring the hope that recovery and resiliency are achievable goals, the position can assist and empower Veterans, who are diagnosed with mental illnesses and/or co-occurring disorders, as well as other chronic illnesses or injuries, to achieve their personal recovery goals. The position performs a wide range of tasks to assist Veterans in regaining independence within the community and mastery over their own recovery and wellness process. As an entry level position, most duties are performed under close supervision by either a licensed independent provider (LIP) or a non-licensed provider who works under a LIP. The purpose of the supervision is to facilitate learning and the development of skills. The knowledge required for this position will be attained through ongoing instruction provided by the supervisor or designee (e.g., the Local Recovery Coordinator). In addition, the position must complete a State or VA-approved contract vendor's certification training process, to be eligible to be hired as a peer specialist.
Duties include, but not limited to the following:

• Participates in the service, training, consultation, and other professional activities of VA health care services and functions as a fully vested member of the multidisciplinary team.
• Uses personal recovery experiences to model coping techniques and recovery tools to coach Veterans on relevant skills needed for self-management of their health condition(s) and pursuit of their personal wellness.
• Observes behaviors that might indicate difficulty adapting or responding to treatment (e.g., missed assessment appointments, failure to attend or maintain abstinence, risk to self or others, disruptive behavior), completes appropriate documentation, and reports concerns to the treatment team in a timely manner.
• Uses ongoing individual and group meetings to teach Veterans how to identify and combat negative self-talk and overcome fears by providing a forum that allows Veteran to share their experiences.
• As necessary, handles crisis interventions for Veterans and addresses other emergent situations through immediate consultation with the supervisor or most available clinical provider.
• Maintains a working knowledge of current trends and developments in holistic approaches in wellness and recovery by reading books, journals, and other relevant materials.

• Assigns daily work to staff, establishing priorities based on workload related to BESS & electronic technicians & ensures that each employee has an integral role in developing the final team product.
• Advises supervisor & other management officials as necessary on status of critical medical equipment.
• Provides input to the annual budget for the unit, & monitors spending throughout the fiscal year to ensure that adequate resources are available to support mission.
• Leads the team in assessing its strengths & weaknesses & provides leadership to the team in exploring alternatives & determining what improvements can be made.
• Develops performance standards for subordinates; evaluates work performance of subordinates using work order & other relevant data.
• Gives advice, counsel, or instruction to employees on both technical & administrative matters; serves as coach & facilitator in consensus building activities among team members.
• Hears & resolves complaints from employees, referring group grievances & more serious unresolved complaints to a higher-level supervisor or manager.
• Effects minor disciplinary measures, such as warnings & reprimands, recommending other action in more serious cases.
• Identifies developmental & training needs of employees, providing or arranging for needed development & training.
• Plans for long-range staffing needs, considering changes to medical equipment inventory, medical center strategic plan, & budget.
• Interviews candidates for positions in the unit; recommends selection, appointment, promotion, or reassignment to such positions.
• Recommends awards or bonuses for subordinates, subject to approval by higher level officials, supervisors, or others.
• Approves & monitors the use of overtime and/or alternate tours needed to accomplish work.

Duties consist of the following, but are not limited to:

• Assists Supervisory Accountant and senior operating accountants in providing cost reports, financial statements and other informational data reflecting the interrelation of accounting and cost budgeting.
• This position performs administrative work for Stations 675 and 485, in support of human resources, budget, accounting, auditing, payroll, fiscal and/or financial management functions.
• Assists in overseeing activities concerning entry of data into various ledgers and records, transfers of funds, disbursements, receivables and payables to ensure funds are efficiently controlled and reports accurately reflect station financial positions.
• Assists in continuously monitoring the Accounting Section with a constant goal of improvement.
• Works in constant coordination with the Social Work Service for the payment to the Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) participants. Processes CWT Payroll on a biweekly basis based on data provided by the Social Work Service.
• Receive, verify for accuracy and process deposits form the Agent Cashier corresponding to the Patient Funds Accounts, General Post Funds, or other miscellaneous funds requiring manual entry into the Financial Management System (FMS).
• Assists senior operating accountants with other reconciliations and review as assigned.
• Serve as a training coordinator for systems used in the procurement and invoicing records.
• Assists station services and collaborates with other agencies with requests/orders within the G-invoicing systems.
• Monitors for funding or administrative issues within the G-invoicing system.
• Review daily reports to ensure all transactions for this program have been released and recorded appropriately in all systems.
• Analyze accounts receivable aging reports and prepare monthly reports for management, as requested.
• Audit bills of collection per policy and established guidelines.

The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Assesses and identifies appropriate community and VA resources, and facilitate utilization of these resources by the Veteran, families, and non-patients;
• Assists Veteran patients with use of video technology;
• Assists patients and families by providing appropriate referrals, for problems that are tangible and overt in nature i.e., inability to meet mortgage payments, to difficulties, and employment problems;
• Assist patients and families by making appropriate referrals, for problems that are intangible in nature i.e., marital conflict, family dysfunction, chronic mental illness and substance use disorders;
• Provides on-going support to patients to maximize their coping and adjustment, to illness, injury, treatment, living demands, one by-product of which is to avoid or forestall readmission to the medical center;
• Assists our Veteran patients in understanding medical protocol and VA benefits;
• Identifies unmet needs within the community and assist in developing these needed resources;
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Duties include but are not limited to:

• The outpatient MH RN is responsible for providing patient-centered and recovery-oriented care and maintaining self-awareness while caring for patients living with MH conditions.
• The MH RN facilitates care coordination, linking with the Inpatient MH Units to facilitate continuity of care, MH interdisciplinary treatment team huddles and meetings, warm hand-offs, and develops content as well as facilitates nurse-led psychoeducational groups.
• The MH RN uses therapeutic communication techniques, practices de-escalation techniques, utilizes recovery-oriented language, and provides Veterans, their family members, and/or significant others with education regarding their illness, medications, and treatment plan.
• The MH RN reports and assists and/or directs safety concern resolution and collaborates with program leadership to help improve patient and program outcomes; and directs team response to psychiatric and medical emergencies.
• The MH RN executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex client care.
• The MH RN documents nursing triage assessments, risk screens, measurement-based care tools, clinical reminders, and patient plan of care according to facility policy.
