As Auto Electrician working on earth-moving equipment you will have specialized tasks and responsibilities focused on maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing the electrical systems of heavy machinery. These tasks ensure that the equipment operates safely and efficiently, even under the demanding conditions typical in construction, mining, and other industrial environments. This role is crucial for the smooth operation of earth-moving equipment, ensuring that electrical systems are reliable and safe, minimizing downtime, and extending the equipment's lifespan
Main Tasks and Responsibilities:
1.Electrical System Diagnosis:
• Identify and troubleshoot electrical faults in earth-moving equipment, including wiring issues, malfunctioning sensors, and short circuits.
• Use diagnostic tools such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and onboard diagnostics systems to locate and assess problems.
2. Repair and Replacement:
• Repair or replace defective components such as alternators, starter motors, batteries, wiring harnesses, and lighting systems.
• Install new electrical systems or upgrade existing ones to enhance the functionality of the equipment.
3. Preventative Maintenance:
• Perform regular inspections and maintenance to prevent electrical failures, including checking battery charge, inspecting wiring for wear, and ensuring that all lights and indicators are functioning properly.
• Keep records of all maintenance activities and repairs conducted.
4. Reading and Interpreting Schematics:
• Interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams specific to earth-moving equipment to accurately troubleshoot and repair electrical systems.
• Modify wiring systems according to the equipment's operational needs or after-market specifications.
5. Installation of Electronic Control Units (ECUs):
• Install and configure electronic control units that manage the operations of various systems in earth-moving equipment, such as engine management, transmission control, and hydraulic systems.
• Program and calibrate ECUs to optimize equipment performance.
6. Safety Compliance:
• Ensure all electrical work complies with safety standards and regulations to protect the operator and others on-site.
• Install and maintain safety systems such as alarms, sensors, and automatic shut-off mechanisms.
7. Collaboration with Other Technicians:
• Work closely with mechanical engineers, hydraulic specialists, and other technicians to resolve complex issues involving multiple systems.
• Provide guidance or training to less experienced technicians regarding electrical repairs.
8. Emergency Repairs:
• Respond to urgent breakdowns in the field, sometimes under challenging conditions, to minimize downtime.
• Quickly assess the situation and carry out temporary or permanent repairs as needed.
9. Documentation and Reporting:
• Maintain detailed records of all diagnostic findings, repairs performed, and parts used.
• Report any recurring issues or potential improvements to enhance equipment reliability.
10. Upgrading and Retrofitting:
• Upgrade old electrical systems to more modern, efficient technologies.
• Retrofit older machines with new electronic features to improve their performance or meet new operational requirements.
Skills and Knowledge Required:
• Strong understanding of electrical systems used in heavy machinery.
• Proficiency with diagnostic tools and software specific to earth-moving equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret complex wiring diagrams and technical manuals.
• Knowledge of safety standards and regulatory requirements related to electrical work in industrial settings.
• Problem-solving skills for diagnosing and repairing electrical issues in a wide variety of equipment.
• Physical dexterity and stamina for working in difficult conditions, such as tight spaces or harsh environments.
Qualifications and Experience.
• Suitable trade certification or at least 3 years of relevant experience.
• At least 2 years of experience in a similar environment.
