Pay Rate: £34 - £45 per hour (assignment rate)
• Days £34ph
• Nights/Saturdays £39.50ph
• Sunday/Bank Holidays £45ph
Contract: Locum & Ongoing Contract

Main Duties:
• Health Assessments: Perform initial health assessments for new inmates, including medical history review, physical examinations, and identifying immediate medical needs.
• Medication Administration: Administer prescribed medications to inmates, ensuring accurate dosages, proper administration methods, and adherence to medication schedules.
• Chronic Disease Management: Provide ongoing care and monitoring for inmates with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and respiratory disorders.
• Emergency Response: Respond promptly to medical emergencies within the prison facility, delivering immediate care and coordinating with other medical staff as necessary.
• Wound Care: Conduct wound assessments, clean and dress wounds, and monitor healing progress while adhering to infection control protocols.
• Health Education: Lead health education sessions for inmates, covering topics like hygiene, disease prevention, medication management, and overall wellness.
• Mental Health Support: Collaborate with the mental health team to identify inmates with mental health concerns and ensure they receive appropriate care and referrals.
• Infection Control: Implement and maintain infection control measures within the healthcare unit to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
• Referrals and Follow-Up: Make referrals for specialized care, diagnostic tests, or consultations outside the prison as needed. Ensure follow-up appointments are scheduled and attended.
• Collaboration: Work closely with other healthcare professionals, correctional staff, and external medical providers to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care.
• Health Records: Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records for each inmate, documenting assessments, treatments, medications, and changes in health status.
• Medication Management: Oversee the medication inventory, monitor storage conditions, and reorder supplies to ensure a continuous supply of necessary medications.
• Documentation and Reporting: Complete incident reports, health assessments, and other essential documentation related to medical care provided to inmates. Report to authorities as required.
• Health Promotion: Develop and implement health promotion initiatives customized for the inmate population, encouraging healthy lifestyle choices.
• Crisis Intervention: Participate in crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies when managing inmates who are agitated or distressed.
Requirements of the Prison Nurse:
• Must be registered on the NMC and must have a relevant qualification in nursing
• Prison clearance and experience is essential
