As a PDRA on this project, the successful applicant will be required to develop relative sea-level reconstructions over the past few hundred years from salt-marshes in Greenland using diatoms as the main proxy, alongside XRF and other stratigraphic methods. These reconstructions will be compared to relative sea-level predictions from new Greenland-wide models of ice sheet change developed by collaborators on the project from Lincoln and Northumbria Universities. The main responsibilities will be to develop new modern and fossil diatom datasets from Greenland saltmarshes and statistical and chronological models that allow quantitative relative sea-level reconstructions from sites around the west coast of Greenland. A further responsibility will be to write applications for radiocarbon dating support, to prepare data, figures and text for publication and to communicate the interim and final findings of the research at collaborator workshops and international science meetings.

This is a great opportunity to work as part of a friendly team on a cutting-edge project. The PDRA will have access to outstanding resources including laboratory and microscope facilities and travel funding for conferences and collaboration.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience in developing relative sea-level reconstructions using diatom data and application of quantitative methods of RSL reconstruction. Previous experience working in salt-marshes would be an advantage.

We are looking for an experienced Team Leader to join our Post Award section within Research and Innovation Services (RIS). The Research Operations Post Award section is responsible for providing overarching support and quality assurance for research, knowledge exchange and expert services Post-Award finance-related activity, including financial management for live grants; provision of live grant information to grant holders and senior management; financial reporting to funders and other external bodies; and support in the management of studentships and grant administration.

We are seeking to appoint a Grade 6 Research Assistant for an externally-funded project examining the use of baby carriers and slings in the UK. The role will involve designing and conducting a systematic review of research evidence, designing and conducting online surveys with families and practitioners, critically evaluating existing guidance and making recommendations. The Durham Infancy & Sleep Centre (DISC) is a research centre of the Department of Anthropology & Faculty of Social Sciences. It is the home for a group of researchers examining various aspects of infant and child sleep and parenting behaviour. This is a 1-year researcher role on a project funded by the National Institute of Health Research's School for Public Health Research. We are seeking either a Grade 7 PhD holder,or Grade 6 graduate to fill this role. The project, COAST (Evaluating COastal rural communities' Active and Sustainable Travel), uses an ethnographic approach to explore responses to active and sustainable travel interventions in rural and coastal County Durham and Cornwall. Methods used are likely to include geonarratives, go-along interviews and photo-elicitation interviews. The postholder will be based at Durham and will conduct intensive fieldwork in the east of County Durham, working closely with a researcher at the University of Exeter who will conduct fieldwork in Cornwall. We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant (RA) on a full-time basis to support a new project on prehabilitation for cancer populations in collaboration with the Cancer Treatment Outcome Programme at the Country Durham and Darlington NHS Trust and the Gateshead Health NHS Trust. Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the field of quantitative geomorphology who will work on cascading landslide and flood hazards in the Garhwal Himalaya, India. The research project "Dynamic Risks for Cascading Himalayan Hazards" is funded by NERC and the Indian Ministry of Earth Sciences and involves UK researchers at Edinburgh, Durham, Newcastle, Glasgow, Bristol, and York; and Indian researchers at IIT Kanpur, Doon, OP Jindal Global, Sikkim, NGRI, and NCESS. The project aims to co-produce, with stakeholders, the first quantitative understanding of the dynamic risk associated with landslide mechanisms that generate unstable sediment storage (or "sediment bombs") within mountain systems, the processes that trigger downstream sediment release in hyperconcentrated flows, and the impact that this has on subsequent flood inundation down the river network.

The successful applicant will be expected to quantify sediment flux to rivers from both shallow and deep landslides using remote sensing imagery, automated landslide detection algorithms, and empirical modelling. They will compare the locations and volumes of landslide sediment flux to sediment bombs mapped within the river network. They will be expected to use machine learning classification of fluvial systems to generate a time-series of sediment erosion and deposition from optical satellite imagery. These data will be an essential component of the wider project which aims to explore how landslide-derived sediment and sediment bomb accumulation and release modifies flood inundation and therefore dynamic risk for the Alaknanda catchment. The successful applicant will work closely with Dr. David Milledge at Newcastle University on landslide sediment flux quantification. They will also be expected to participate in wider team meetings and workshops which will be held both in the UK and in India.

The Role

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available to pursue experimental research in the field of atomic and laser physics within the Durham Quantum Light and Matter group. The position is associated with a project funded by the EURAMET - the metrology component of the European Union Horizon 2020 Programme.

The post holder will be expected to display the initiative and creativity, together with the appropriate skills and knowledge, required to lead and develop experiments to meet the project goals. The post holder will be expected to be familiar with narrowband and tunable scientific lasers, and have experience in atomic physics, quantum optics or laser cooling and trapping. The post holder is expected to be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a small research team. It is expected that the post holder will enhance the international contacts of the group through the presentation of work at international conferences. The post holder will also be expected to aid in the supervision of graduate students within the group as well as contributing to the undergraduate teaching within the Department.

The aim is to explore the use of reconfigurable arrays of trapped ultra-cold atoms in next generation optical atomic clocks. This post is part of the CoCoRiCo consortium, which consists of 4 National Metrology Institutes and 5 university research groups from across Europe. Your role will be to contribute to the development new techniques for trapping and manipulating atoms, as well as studies of systematic errors in tweezer array atomic clocks.

The successful candidate will be required to take a lead role in all aspects of the project, contributing directly to the experiment and working closely with Prof Matthew Jones, collaborators within the CoCoRiCo consortium and outside, as well as graduate students and other members of the research group. You will be expected to undertake an active role in the laboratory activity.

The Role and the Department     

A laboratory technician post (Grade 6) is available for 2 years (full time, but with the option for flexible working hours) in the laboratory of Professor Keith Lindsey, Department of Biosciences, Durham University to work on a multidisciplinary industrial biotechnology and bioengineering project on environmental processing and recovery of metals.

The world in 2040 is expected to need 4 times as many critical minerals/metals for clean energy technologies as it does today. To achieve this goal, it is clear that environmental processing and recovery of minerals and metals will play a critical strategic role not only in sustainable resource management but also in waste reduction, pollution prevention, and the transition towards a more circular and environmentally conscious economy. This project unites specialists from across the UK who possess knowledge in essential technologies related to bio-extraction and bio-recovery of metals. We will collaborate to establish an open knowledge Hub aimed at enhancing ongoing projects of engineered organisms at various technology readiness levels that tackle important environmental issues associated with mineral extraction, urban mining, industrial waste, and legacy nuclear waste. The Engineering Biology Hub aims to provide a powerful suite of engineering biology tools and approaches that represent sustainable and efficient solutions to address many of the environmental challenges concerning metal waste and metal-scarcity.

The technician will support this project through the functional characterization of bacterially biorecovered copper nanoparticles (CuNPs). Bio-synthesised CuNPs represent a potential application of biorecovery, as part of a circular economy approach to reduce the need for newly extracted copper and chemical processes for NP synthesis. We will 1) test the ability of biosynthesised CuNPs (using Shewanella oneidensis) to replicate the effects of chemically synthesised CuNPs on plant root growth (a bioassay for CuNP functionality), and 2) use CuNPs from engineered S. oneidensis, optimised for NP production. This £12 M project, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, links with a second large project with the water industry, to develop methodologies to prevent tree root ingress into built structures, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with team members both within Durham and also in other participating UK Universities.
